I was the representative (naqib) of my clan, Banu al-Najjar, at the Pledge of al-'Aqabah. I met the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Mecca, a year before the First Pledge of al-'Aqabah, along with five other men from the Khazraj tribe. We believed in him, and when we returned to Medina, we called our people to Islam and to following the Prophet (peace be upon him). When the following year came, twelve of us set out as Muslims, and we pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the pilgrimage season. Then we departed, and that was the First Pledge of al-'Aqabah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent along with us Mus'ab Ibn 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) to recite the Qur'an to us and instruct us in the religion. Then we came to him the following year— seventy men—to give him the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah. I wanted to reassure myself regarding my people and strengthen their resolve, so I stood up, took the hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and said: "Wait, O people of Yathrib! We have not journeyed to him except knowing full well that he is the Messenger of Allah. Taking him away today means severing ties with all the Arabs, having your best men killed, and facing the bite of swords. So either you are a people who will endure that, and your reward is with Allah, or you fear some weakness within yourselves, so leave him now, for that would be more excusable for you before Allah." They said: "Take your hand away! By Allah, we will never abandon this pledge, nor will we ever ask to be released from it!" So we stepped forward and pledged allegiance to him, and he took our oaths and set the conditions, promising us Paradise in return. I was the first to gather the people for the Friday prayer in Medina, and I also used to lead them in the five daily prayers in a mosque I built for the Muslims. In the first year of the Hijrah, I fell ill and was treated with cauterization, but the illness only grew worse. Then my appointed time came, and my soul departed, and that was before the Battle of Badr. My clan, Banu al-Najjar, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "Our representative has passed away, so appoint a representative over us, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace be upon him) said: "I am your representative." And my people used to take great pride in that. So, who am I? Share your answers with us in the comments below the video! I am one of the Muhajirun Companions, and one of the maternal uncles of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I embraced Islam early on, took part in all the major campaigns alongside him, and was among the heroes and military commanders in battle. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) once saw me and said: "This is my maternal uncle; let each man show me his maternal uncle!" On the day of Uhud, we were present for the battle, and when we saw the gathered forces of the polytheists, 'Abdullah Ibn Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "Shall we not go aside and supplicate to Allah?" So we withdrew to a quiet spot, and I supplicated, saying: "O Allah, when we meet the enemy tomorrow, match me against a man of fierce might and raging fury, that I may fight him for Your sake and he may fight me, and then grant me victory over him so that I may slay him and take his spoils." 'Abdullah Ibn Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Amin." Then he made his supplication, saying: "O Allah, grant me tomorrow a man of fierce might and raging fury, that I may fight him for Your sake and he may fight me, and then he may kill me, take hold of me, and cut off my nose and ears. Then, when I meet You tomorrow, You will say to me: 'O 'Abdullah, why were your nose and ears cut off?' And I will reply: 'For Your sake and the sake of Your Messenger.' And You will say: 'You have spoken the truth.'" By Allah, the supplication of 'Abdullah Ibn Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) was far better than mine! For at the end of the day, I saw him, and his nose and ear were indeed strung upon a cord. So, who am I? Share your answers with us in the comments below the video! I am one of the senior Muhajirun Companions, one of the ten promised Paradise, and the trustworthy keeper (Amin) of this Ummah. I was known for asceticism, gentle kindness, wisdom, and a sober intellect. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) nominated me for the caliphate after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I made both migrations, witnessed all the major campaigns with the Prophet (peace be upon him), was among the valiant commanders in battle, and contributed to the Islamic conquests during the reigns of Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), conquering the rest of the lands of the Levant (al-Sham). During the Battle of Uhud, when the ranks fell into chaos and the Muslims were exposed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became the primary target of the polytheists, I began searching for him (peace and blessings be upon him), ready to ransom him with my life, family, and wealth. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to reach the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and began defending him. I caught sight of the two from a distance and rushed toward them like a hawk, intending to defend the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). There he was (peace and blessings be upon him), having been struck on his head, with two links from his helmet chain embedded in his cheek. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to pull them out, but I implored him by Allah to leave the matter between me and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so that I might extract them myself. I tried by hand but could not, so I gripped them with my teeth, and they did not come out from his face until my two front incisors broke off. Thus I became gap-toothed, missing my front teeth, and people used to say of me that no gap-toothed man was ever handsomer than me. When the delegation of Najran arrived in Medina, they stayed there for some days. The Prophet (peace be upon him) invited them to Islam and recited the Qur'an to them, but they refused, arguing extensively concerning Jesus (peace be upon him). So the Prophet (peace be upon him) challenged them to mutual imprecation (mubahalah), but they grew fearful and declined, saying: "We will not do it, for by Allah, if you are a prophet and we invoke a curse against you, neither we nor our descendants after us will ever prosper." Then they said: "O Muhammad, send with us a trustworthy man, and do not send with us anyone but a truly trustworthy man." He (peace be upon him) said: "I will surely send with you a man who is trustworthy to the utmost degree." The Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) eagerly aspired to be chosen, but he said to me: "Stand up." When I stood up, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "This is the trustworthy keeper (Amin) of this Ummah." So I went with them to Najran, and they embraced Islam, and Islam spread among them. So, who am I? Share your answers with us in the comments below the video! I am an Ansari Companion. I witnessed the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah and all the major campaigns with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I carried the banner of Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj on the day of the Conquest of Mecca. I used to write in Arabic before Islam, and writing among the Arabs was rare. Allah Almighty honored me with the vision of the Adhan in a dream. That occurred because the Prophet (peace be upon him) was deeply concerned about the prayer— how to gather the people for it. It was suggested to him: "Let us raise a banner when prayer time arrives, and when the people see it, they will inform one another." But he (peace be upon him) did not like that idea. Then they mentioned the horn (shofar) to him, but he did not like that either, saying: "That belongs to the custom of the Jews." Then they mentioned the bell (naqus) to him, and he said: "That belongs to the custom of the Christians." So I left, sharing the concern of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). "I was shown the adhan in my dream, so the next morning I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, a visitor passed by me last night; a man wearing two green garments passed by me, carrying a clapper in his hand. I said to him, "O servant of Allah, will you sell this clapper?" He asked, "What will you do with it?" I replied, "We will call people to prayer with it." He said, "Shall I not show you something better than that?" I said, "What is it?" He said, "Say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is no god but Allah."' The Prophet (peace be upon him) was pleased with that, and he said, 'It is indeed a true vision. Stand with Bilal and convey to him what you saw, so that he may call the adhan with it, for he has a louder and more resonant voice than you.' So I began conveying it to Bilal, and Bilal called the adhan. 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) heard it while he was in his house, and he came out dragging his cloak, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have seen the exact same thing he saw!' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'To Allah belongs all praise.' One day, I gave an orchard of mine as charity, having no other wealth besides it, and in it I lived with my children. I handed it over to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then my parents came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it was our sole means of sustenance, and we possess nothing else.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) summoned me and said, 'Allah has accepted your charity from you, and has returned it as an inheritance to your parents.' Thus we inherited it among ourselves. I was also present with the Prophet (peace be upon him) at the slaughter place, accompanied by a man from the Ansar. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) distributed the meat of his sacrificial animals, but neither I nor my companion received anything from it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) noticed us, and after shaving his head, he distributed some of his hair among the men, and gave a portion of it to me and my companion. It remains with us, dyed with henna and katam. Who am I?" "I am one of the senior Companions, among the noble leaders of the Ansar, and one of the people of the Qur'an. I took part in Badr and in all the battles alongside the Prophet (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) used to dispatch me as a commander over some military expeditions. He once sent me as commander of an expedition toward Najd, where I was wounded. During the Battle of Mu'tah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) appointed Zayd Ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander of the army, and said, 'If Zayd is struck down, then Ja'far; and if Ja'far is struck down, then 'Abdullah Ibn Rawahah.' As soon as the battle commenced and the fighting intensified, all three commanders fell one after another before the overwhelming numbers of the enemy. When the banner fell upon the martyrdom of 'Abdullah Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had not appointed anyone to carry it after him, I stepped forward and took up the banner, and called out, 'O assembly of Muslims, agree upon a man among yourselves!' They said, 'You!' I replied, 'I shall not do so.' The ranks began to scatter and fall back, so I advanced with the banner and caught sight of Khalid Ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), who had embraced Islam only three months prior. I handed it over to him, but Khalid said, 'I will not take it from you; you have a greater right to it, you are older, you fought at Badr, and you carry the Qur'an.' I said, 'By Allah, O Khalid, I took it only for you; you are more knowledgeable in warfare than I am!' Then I called out to the Muslims at the top of my voice, 'O Muslims, do you accept Khalid's leadership?' They replied, 'O Allah, yes!' So Khalid Ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) took the banner. Back in Madinah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, while in Madinah, describing the battle's events to those with him, 'Then one of the swords of Allah took up the banner, and Allah granted them victory.' After the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), I set out with the Muslim armies to fight the apostates. When Khalid Ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near to the enemy, he sent me and 'Ukashah Ibn Mihsan as a vanguard ahead of him to bring back intelligence. We encountered Tulayhah Ibn Khuwaylid and his brother Salamah, who were serving as scouts for their forces behind them. Tulayhah engaged 'Ukashah, while I engaged Salamah. It was not long before Salamah killed me, and Tulayhah shouted to his brother Salamah, 'Help me against this man, for he will surely kill me!' So Salamah and his brother turned upon 'Ukashah (may Allah be pleased with him) and killed him. Khalid Ibn al-Walid and the Muslims with him arrived and found us slain, bearing terrible wounds. The sight deeply grieved them, so they dug graves for us and buried us in our blood and garments. A period of time later, Tulayhah Ibn Khuwaylid came as a Muslim to 'Umar, the Commander of the Believers. 'Umar said to him, 'How can I love you when you killed those two righteous men, 'Ukashah and his companion?' Tulayhah replied, 'Allah honored them at my hands, and did not humiliate me at theirs.' "I am one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), from the people of Makkah, and the son of one of its chieftains. My brother 'Abdullah and I embraced Islam, and we concealed our faith. When my father learned of our Islam, he imprisoned, bound, and tortured us, preventing us from emigrating with the Muslims to Madinah. My brother then pretended to renounce Islam and to return to their religion, so they released him. Later, my brother 'Abdullah marched out with the Quraysh mobilization to Badr alongside the polytheists, accompanying my father under his care, with my father having no doubt that he had truly returned to his ancestral faith. But when the Muslims and polytheists met at Badr and the two hosts came into view of each other, my brother 'Abdullah defected to the side of the Muslims, making his way to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) before the fighting began. and he took part in the Battle of Badr as a Muslim, which enraged my father severely. As for me, I remained in captivity until the Muslims came to perform 'Umrah in the sixth year after the Hijrah. Quraysh opposed them and barred them from entering the Sacred Sanctuary, so they encamped at al-Hudaybiyyah. Emissaries went back and forth between them until they agreed upon a peace treaty. Quraysh sent my father to conclude the treaty with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. While they were writing down the terms of the treaty, I came fleeing toward the Muslims, shuffling in my fetters, until I threw myself before them. When my father saw me, he said, "This is the very first matter I contest with you, O Muhammad: return him to me." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Grant him to me." But he refused. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned me to him. I cried out at the top of my voice: "O gathering of Muslims! Am I to be returned to the polytheists so that they persecute me in my religion?!" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "Be patient and seek your reward with Allah, for Allah will surely make for you and the oppressed ones with you relief and a way out. We have made a pact with these people, and we do not break our word." Then my father stepped forward toward me and began striking my face with a thorny branch. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was deeply distressed by this, so he approached me and began walking beside me, saying: "Be patient, for they are only polytheists, and the blood of any of them is merely like the blood of a dog!" He kept bringing his sword close to me, hoping that I would take it and strike my father with it, but I did not do so. Later, I escaped a second time from captivity and chains and joined Abu Basir (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions along the seacoast. We formed a band of Muslims and never let any caravan of Quraysh pass by without seizing it, until Quraysh grew desperate on account of us. They then sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), pleading with him to take us in with him, and he did so. Because of these events, I did not take part with the Prophet (peace be upon him) in any of his military expeditions prior to the Conquest of Makkah. So, who am I? Pause and get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the notable figures! A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Muhajirun Companions and among the earliest Muslims in Makkah, as I embraced Islam as the seventh of seven people when I was sixteen years old. I concealed my Islam, so no one knew about me, not even my relatives. I was the first scribe of the Divine Revelation, and I was among the wealthy and affluent of Quraysh, my face glowing with youthful radiance and beauty. My house stood on Mount al-Safa, in a quiet neighborhood near the Ka'bah inhabited only by the affluent elite of Quraysh. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose it as his base, taking refuge there in Makkah along with the Muslims during the period of the secret call to Islam. My house was the most significant center for calling people to Islam; in it, the prominent Companions and the earliest Muslims embraced Islam. They remained hidden therein until their number reached forty men, the last of whom to embrace Islam was 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. When they reached forty men, they went forth in two ranks, openly proclaiming the call to Allah Almighty, led by Hamzah and 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both. My house became known as the House of Islam (Dar al-Islam). I participated in all the battles alongside the Prophet (peace be upon him). At the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) granted me a sword from the spoils of war, and he appointed me to distribute the charitable offerings. When the polytheists challenged the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), saying: "If you are truthful, O Muhammad, then split the moon into two halves for us, placing one half over Mount Abu Qubays and the other half over Mount Qu'ayqi'an." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to them: "If I do that, will you believe in me?" They said, "Yes." It was a full-moon night, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked his Lord to grant him what they had requested. The moon then became split—one half over this mountain and one half over that one. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called out to me and said to me and to Abu Salamah: "Bear witness!" One day, I prepared myself intending to visit Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). When I had finished my preparations, I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bid him farewell. He asked: "What is taking you out? A personal need or trade?" I said: "Neither, O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! Rather, I wish to pray in Bayt al-Maqdis." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "A single prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers in any other mosque, except for the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram)." So I abandoned the journey and stayed in Madinah. So, who am I? Share your answers with us in the comments below the video, and we will pin the correct answer in the comments when the next episode is released, if Allah wills. Pause and get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the notable figures! A new challenge: Who am I? I am an Ansari female Companion, among the earliest inhabitants of Madinah to embrace Islam, and I was one of two women who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah. I participated in most of the military expeditions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I took part in the Battle of Uhud alongside my husband and my sons. When the Muslims were thrown into disarray, I rallied close to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and began fighting directly in the battle, defending the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with the sword and shooting with the bow, until I suffered numerous wounds. When the people scattered away from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at the Battle of Uhud, and nobody remained with him except a few individuals not even totaling ten, I, along with my two sons and my husband, stood before him defending him, while the people were retreating past us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) saw that I had no shield, and he noticed a retreating man carrying a shield, so he said to the owner of the shield: "Throw your shield to the one who is fighting!" So he threw his shield down, and I took it and began shielding the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with it. A man approached me on horseback and struck at me, but I deflected his blow with my shield; and when he turned away, I struck the hock of his horse with my sword, so that he fell backward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) began calling out to my son: "Help your mother! Help your mother!" So my son helped me against him until we killed him. While we were engaged in the fighting, my son was wounded and his blood began to flow, while I was preoccupied with fighting the enemy. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called out to me, so I noticed my son and went over to him, having bandages around my waist that I had prepared for wounds. I bound his wound while the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood watching us. Then I said: "Get up, my son, and fight the enemy!" The Prophet (peace be upon him) began saying: "Who can endure what you endure, O Umm 'Umarah?!" Then the man who had struck my son approached, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "This is the one who struck your son." So I confronted him and struck his leg, severing it. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smile until his molar teeth showed, and he said: "You have avenged yourself, O Umm 'Umarah!" Then we fell upon him with weapons until he was dead. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Praise be to Allah, who granted you victory, comforted your eyes against your enemy, and let you see your retribution with your own eyes!" And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The stand of Umm 'Umarah today is better than the stand of so-and-so and so-and-so." The Prophet (peace be upon him) would not look to the right or to the left without seeing me fighting to protect him. On that day, I sustained thirteen wounds, the most severe of which was the blow from Ibn Qami'ah upon my shoulder, which I treated for a whole year. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw it, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said— when he saw the wound on my shoulder— he said to my son: "Bandage her wound! O Allah, make them my companions in Paradise!" I was overjoyed with his supplication, and after that, I no longer cared about whatever befell me. Then the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) announced the march to Hamra' al-Asad, but I was unable to go due to the severity of my wounds. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned from Hamra' al-Asad, he sent my brother to inquire about me, and he returned to inform him of my safety. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was delighted by that. So, who am I? Pause, and learn about the Companions, scholars, and prominent figures. A new challenge: Who am I? I am the poet of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his Companion. I am the master of the believing poets, aided by the Holy Spirit, Gabriel (peace be upon him). I am from the Ansar, from Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I was born in Medina sixty years before Islam, and I lived sixty years in Islam. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Medina, Quraysh satirized him through their poets, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "Satirize them! But I fear you might inadvertently target my lineage along with them." So I said to him: "By the One Who sent you with the truth, I will extract you from among them just as a hair is extracted from dough!" So I satirized them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "You have brought relief and found satisfaction." And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "For indeed, your satire is harsher upon them than a volley of arrows." The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to set up a pulpit for me in the mosque, upon which I would stand and defend him, while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would say: "Indeed, Allah supports you through Gabriel, the Holy Spirit." And he would stand aided by Gabriel, the Holy Spirit. Al-Muqawqis, ruler of Egypt, gifted two bondwomen to the Prophet (peace be upon him): Mariyah and her sister Sirin. The Prophet (peace be upon him) kept Mariyah for himself and gifted her sister to me. She accepted Islam with me, so I manumitted her and married her, and she bore me my son, 'Abd al-Rahman. Thus, my son 'Abd al-Rahman and Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah, became maternal first cousins. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by me while I was reciting poetry in the mosque, and he looked at me with disapproval. So I said to him: "I used to recite poetry in this very mosque in the presence of one who was better than you." Thereupon, 'Umar said: "You have spoken the truth." I strove alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with my life and my tongue, and I witnessed all the battles with him. I was never once a coward in all my life, contrary to the rumors spread about me. I was favored over other poets by three distinctions: I was the poet of the Ansar during the Pre-Islamic Era, the poet of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the poet of all Yemen in Islam. I am from the Ansar, among the younger Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I embraced Islam before reaching puberty, and I sat in the company of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the senior Companions, acquiring vast knowledge from them until I was titled the Mufti of Medina. It was said of me that there was no one among the younger Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) more knowledgeable than me. On the day of Uhud, I was presented before the Prophet (peace be upon him) when I was thirteen years old. My father took hold of my hand and said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has strong, sturdy arms." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began looking me up and down, and then he said to my father: "Send him back." So he sent me back. Later, I participated in the Battle of Banu al-Mustaliq with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and in the subsequent military expeditions. My father was martyred on the day of Uhud, leaving us with no wealth. So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to ask him for financial help, and as soon as he saw me, he said: "Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient, and whoever strives for modesty and restraint, Allah will grant him chastity." So I returned and never asked anyone for anything after that; we sought sufficiency in Allah, and Allah Almighty enriched us from His bounty. One day, I was traveling with a group of Muslims, and we stopped near one of the Arab encampments, but they refused to offer us hospitality. Then their chieftain was stung by a scorpion, so I performed ruqyah on him with the Qur'an in exchange for a stipulated payment upon which I had agreed with them, which was a flock of sheep. I began reciting Surah al-Fatihah over him and blowing lightly with spit, and the man stood up walking as though completely free of ailment. They fulfilled the payment they had agreed upon with us, so some of our companions said: "Divide the flock among us." But I said: "Do not do so until we come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), relate to him what transpired, and see what he commands us." When we came before the Prophet (peace be upon him), I mentioned that to him, and he endorsed my action, saying: "How did you know that it is a ruqyah? You did the right thing! Divide the flock, and assign a share for me alongside yourselves." During the Battle of al-Harrah, I withdrew from the tribulations and kept away from the people, seeking refuge in a mountain cave. A man from the people of the Levant pursued me, and when I saw him, I drew my sword. But when he saw me and remained determined to kill me, I sheathed my sword and then recited: "Indeed, I want you to bear the sin of killing me along with your own sin, “Lo! I would rather thou shouldst bear the punishment of the sin against me and thine own sin and become one of the owners of the fire. That is the reward of evil-doers.” (5:29) and that is the recompense of the wrongdoers." When he saw that, he said: "Who are you?" So I introduced myself to him, and he said: "Are you a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?" I replied: "Yes." So he turned away and left me alone. A man once came to me and said: "Give me counsel." So I said to him: "You must adhere to the mindfulness of Allah, for it is the head of all matters; and you must adhere to jihad, for it is the monasticism of Islam; and you must adhere to the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Qur'an, for it is your soul among the heavenly host and your honorable mention among the people of the earth; and you must maintain silence except in the pursuit of truth, for by doing so you shall overcome Satan."
