00:00:33.549 Abu Lubaba, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:00:47.259 --> 00:00:52.369 In the second year before the Hijrah, 00:00:52.369 --> 00:00:56.369 caravans of pilgrims set out from the polytheists of Yathrib, 00:00:56.369 --> 00:01:00.369 turning their faces toward Makkah, intending to perform the pilgrimage. 00:01:00.369 --> 00:01:03.369 Among the ranks of these polytheistic caravans 00:01:03.369 --> 00:01:06.370 were seventy men and two women 00:01:06.370 --> 00:01:08.370 who had embraced Islam. 00:01:08.370 --> 00:01:10.370 They approached Makkah, 00:01:10.370 --> 00:01:14.370 their hearts filled with the hope of meeting their noble Prophet, 00:01:14.370 --> 00:01:16.370 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:01:16.370 --> 00:01:18.370 And the bearer of their upright religion, 00:01:18.370 --> 00:01:21.430 for many of them had believed in him 00:01:21.430 --> 00:01:24.430 before their eyes had even beheld him. 00:01:24.430 --> 00:01:26.459 No sooner had they arrived in Makkah 00:01:26.459 --> 00:01:30.459 than they made an appointment with the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:01:30.459 --> 00:01:32.459 to meet in secret 00:01:32.459 --> 00:01:35.459 on the second day of the Tashriq days. 00:01:35.459 --> 00:01:37.530 The place of the meeting was 00:01:37.530 --> 00:01:40.530 at the first Jamrah in Mina. 00:01:40.530 --> 00:01:41.530 As for the time, 00:01:41.530 --> 00:01:44.530 it was in the last third of the night, 00:01:44.530 --> 00:01:46.530 for fear that the Quraysh might find out. 00:01:46.530 --> 00:01:48.530 The night was a veil, 00:01:48.530 --> 00:01:50.530 and the world was asleep, 00:01:50.530 --> 00:01:52.530 save for the hearts of the believers. 00:01:52.530 --> 00:01:54.560 And there, 00:01:54.560 --> 00:01:57.560 the early believers from the Ansar renewed their pledge 00:01:57.560 --> 00:02:00.560 to meet their Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:02.560 in a place hidden from the Quraysh. 00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:04.560 And there, too, 00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:07.560 they extended their hands to him and said, 00:02:07.560 --> 00:02:09.560 "We pledge our allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah, 00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:12.560 for we are people of war and people of arms, 00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:15.560 which we have inherited from generation to generation." 00:02:15.560 --> 00:02:18.560 Then they pledged to protect him 00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:22.560 just as they protected themselves, their wives, and their children, 00:02:22.560 --> 00:02:25.560 and that he and his Companions should migrate to them. 00:02:25.560 --> 00:02:28.560 Among the foremost of those who pledged allegiance 00:02:28.560 --> 00:02:30.560 was Abu Lubaba, 00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:32.590 Rifa'ah ibn al-Mundhir. 00:02:32.590 --> 00:02:35.590 Before these believing men who had pledged allegiance dispersed 00:02:35.590 --> 00:02:38.590 from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:02:38.590 --> 00:02:41.590 he chose twelve men from among their leaders, 00:02:41.590 --> 00:02:44.590 appointing them as their representatives (nuqaba'). 00:02:44.590 --> 00:02:47.590 Among these representatives 00:02:47.590 --> 00:02:49.659 was Abu Lubaba. 00:02:50.659 --> 00:02:53.659 They returned to Yathrib with the believing vanguard, 00:02:53.659 --> 00:02:56.659 “Jubilant (are they) because of that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty, rejoicing for the sake of those who have not joined them but are left behind: That there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.” (3:170) 00:02:56.659 --> 00:03:01.659 overjoyed at having met their Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:01.659 --> 00:03:05.659 resolved to fulfill the conditions of their pledge. 00:03:05.659 --> 00:03:10.659 They began to make preparations to receive the waves of the Muhajirun (emigrants), 00:03:10.659 --> 00:03:15.659 and made ready to welcome the noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:20.659 Then Allah granted His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, permission to migrate, 00:03:20.659 --> 00:03:23.659 so he turned his face toward Madinah, 00:03:23.659 --> 00:03:26.659 accompanied by his intimate friend and companion, 00:03:26.659 --> 00:03:28.659 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:03:28.659 --> 00:03:33.780 No sooner had the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, reached the outskirts of Yathrib 00:03:33.780 --> 00:03:36.780 than the entire city surged forth 00:03:36.780 --> 00:03:38.780 to welcome its great guest 00:03:38.780 --> 00:03:41.780 and greet its noble Prophet, 00:03:41.780 --> 00:03:44.780 Muhammad ibn Abdullah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:03:44.780 --> 00:03:49.780 Abu Lubaba was among the foremost of those welcoming and greeting him. 00:03:49.780 --> 00:03:51.780 Days passed, 00:03:51.780 --> 00:03:54.780 the foundations of the Islamic state were laid, 00:03:54.780 --> 00:03:59.780 and Allah granted His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, permission for jihad. 00:03:59.780 --> 00:04:05.780 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, resolved to meet the polytheists at Badr. 00:04:05.780 --> 00:04:08.819 When the Muslim army set out from Madinah, 00:04:08.819 --> 00:04:12.819 heading to meet their enemy and the enemy of Allah, 00:04:12.819 --> 00:04:15.819 Abu Lubaba was in the army, 00:04:15.819 --> 00:04:17.819 yearning for jihad 00:04:17.819 --> 00:04:20.819 and hoping for martyrdom. 00:04:20.819 --> 00:04:24.819 But the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:04:24.819 --> 00:04:26.819 sent him back from partway along the journey, 00:04:26.819 --> 00:04:28.819 appointing him as his deputy over Madinah. 00:04:28.819 --> 00:04:30.819 He commanded him to return, 00:04:30.819 --> 00:04:33.819 and Abu Lubaba submitted to the command. 00:04:33.819 --> 00:04:36.819 He returned, his heart heavy with sorrow 00:04:36.819 --> 00:04:38.819 and his soul filled with regret. 00:04:38.819 --> 00:04:42.819 But the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had commanded, 00:04:42.819 --> 00:04:47.819 and the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is not to be refused. 00:04:47.819 --> 00:04:50.879 The noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sensed 00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:55.879 the conflicting emotions stirring within Abu Lubaba. 00:04:55.879 --> 00:05:00.879 For being the deputy of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Madinah 00:05:00.879 --> 00:05:03.879 is an honor like no other, 00:05:03.879 --> 00:05:05.879 yet being deprived of the reward of jihad 00:05:05.879 --> 00:05:08.879 is a loss like no other. 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:12.879 So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, comforted him, 00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:14.879 assigned him a share of the spoils, 00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:16.879 and promised him the reward, 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:18.879 as if he had been present at Badr. 00:05:18.879 --> 00:05:22.879 Abu Lubaba remained sincere to his Lord, 00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:27.879 faithful to the pledge he had made to his Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:27.879 --> 00:05:30.879 until the Battle of Banu Qurayza, 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:33.879 where his mount stumbled, 00:05:33.879 --> 00:05:41.879 and he committed a slip he never imagined he would make. 00:05:41.879 --> 00:05:44.879 This was because the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:48.879 had headed toward Banu Qurayza after the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq), 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:51.879 to discipline them for breaking their covenant, 00:05:51.879 --> 00:05:55.879 their betrayal of him, and their treachery against the Muslims. 00:05:55.879 --> 00:05:58.879 He besieged their fortresses from every side, 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:01.879 surrounding them as a shackle surrounds the neck. 00:06:01.879 --> 00:06:05.040 When the siege intensified upon them, 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:08.040 they sent to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:11.040 to negotiate their surrender, 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:14.040 stipulating certain conditions for themselves. 00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:17.040 But the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, refused 00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:19.040 to accept any condition from them, 00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:23.040 and ordered them to submit to his judgment, whatever it might be. 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:27.040 He had already decreed that their fighting men be executed, 00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:29.040 and they did not know. 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:34.040 So they sent to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying, 00:06:34.040 --> 00:06:37.040 "Send us Abu Lubaba so we may consult him." 00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:40.040 There had been an alliance between them and the tribe of Abu Lubaba 00:06:40.040 --> 00:06:43.040 during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era). 00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:45.040 When Abu Lubaba came to them, 00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:50.040 the women and children gathered around him, weeping and wailing. 00:06:50.040 --> 00:06:53.040 The men stood before him, asking, 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:57.040 "Do you think we should submit to the judgment of Muhammad, O Abu Lubaba?" 00:06:57.040 --> 00:06:59.040 He said, "Yes." 00:06:59.040 --> 00:07:04.040 But he gestured with his hand toward his throat to signal to them 00:07:04.040 --> 00:07:06.040 that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:06.040 --> 00:07:09.040 had decreed their execution. 00:07:09.100 --> 00:07:11.100 Abu Lubaba said, 00:07:11.100 --> 00:07:14.100 "By Allah, my feet had not yet moved from their place 00:07:14.100 --> 00:07:20.100 before I realized that I had betrayed Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him." 00:07:20.100 --> 00:07:22.100 He was overcome with remorse. 00:07:22.100 --> 00:07:25.100 "I do not know how I can escape the wrath of Allah." 00:07:25.100 --> 00:07:30.170 Abu Lubaba did not go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:30.170 --> 00:07:33.170 but instead headed straight to his house. 00:07:33.170 --> 00:07:36.170 He brought an iron chain, 00:07:36.170 --> 00:07:40.170 and asked to be tied to one of the pillars of the Mosque, 00:07:40.170 --> 00:07:43.170 standing on his feet. 00:07:43.170 --> 00:07:46.170 Then he said, "By Allah, I will not untie myself, 00:07:46.170 --> 00:07:49.170 nor will I consume food or drink, 00:07:49.170 --> 00:07:53.170 until Allah accepts my repentance or I die." 00:07:53.170 --> 00:07:59.170 When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw him in this state 00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:01.170 and learned of what he had done, 00:08:01.170 --> 00:08:04.170 he said, "Had he come to me, 00:08:04.170 --> 00:08:06.170 I would have sought forgiveness for him. 00:08:06.170 --> 00:08:08.170 But since he has done what he has done, 00:08:08.170 --> 00:08:12.170 I will not release him until Allah releases him." 00:08:12.170 --> 00:08:16.170 Abu Lubaba remained in this state for days, 00:08:16.170 --> 00:08:18.170 until his body grew weak, 00:08:18.170 --> 00:08:20.170 his bones became frail, 00:08:20.170 --> 00:08:22.170 and his strength failed. 00:08:22.170 --> 00:08:24.170 Then other days followed, 00:08:24.170 --> 00:08:26.170 during which his hearing was affected, 00:08:26.170 --> 00:08:29.170 so he could barely hear anything. 00:08:29.170 --> 00:08:31.170 His sight also dimmed, 00:08:31.170 --> 00:08:34.169 so he could barely see. 00:08:34.169 --> 00:08:39.169 He had a daughter who would come to him, weeping and wailing, 00:08:39.169 --> 00:08:42.169 and she would untie his bonds for every prayer, 00:08:42.169 --> 00:08:46.299 then tie him back to his chain afterward. 00:08:46.299 --> 00:08:52.299 Abu Lubaba spent six days and nights tied to the pillar of the Mosque, 00:08:52.299 --> 00:08:55.299 until relief came to him from the heavens 00:08:55.299 --> 00:08:58.299 at the dawn of the seventh night. 00:08:58.299 --> 00:09:02.299 This occurred in the house of Umm Salama, may Allah be pleased with her. 00:09:02.299 --> 00:09:04.299 Umm Salama said, 00:09:04.299 --> 00:09:07.299 "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:09:07.299 --> 00:09:09.299 at dawn, laughing. 00:09:09.299 --> 00:09:11.299 I said, 00:09:11.299 --> 00:09:13.299 'Why are you laughing, O Messenger of Allah? 00:09:13.299 --> 00:09:15.299 May Allah keep you smiling.' 00:09:15.299 --> 00:09:18.299 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:09:18.299 --> 00:09:21.360 'Allah has accepted the repentance of Abu Lubaba.' 00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:25.419 I said, 'Shall I give him the good news, O Messenger of Allah?' 00:09:25.419 --> 00:09:27.419 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, 00:09:27.419 --> 00:09:30.419 'Yes, if you wish.'" 00:09:30.419 --> 00:09:33.419 So Umm Salama stood at the door of her chamber, 00:09:33.419 --> 00:09:39.419 and this was before the veil (hijab) was imposed upon the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:09:39.419 --> 00:09:40.419 and she said, 00:09:40.419 --> 00:09:42.419 "O Abu Lubaba, 00:09:42.419 --> 00:09:43.419 rejoice, 00:09:43.419 --> 00:09:45.419 for Allah has accepted your repentance." 00:09:45.419 --> 00:09:47.519 Umm Salama said, 00:09:47.519 --> 00:09:50.519 "The people rushed to him to untie him." 00:09:50.519 --> 00:09:51.519 But he said, 00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:52.519 "No, by Allah, 00:09:52.519 --> 00:09:57.519 not until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, unties me with his own hand." 00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:02.620 When the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went out for prayer, 00:10:02.620 --> 00:10:04.809 he untied him himself. 00:10:04.809 --> 00:10:10.809 No one can fathom the joy of Abu Lubaba at Allah’s acceptance of his repentance, 00:10:10.809 --> 00:10:16.809 or imagine the extent of his delight at his Prophet’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, pleasure with him. 00:10:16.809 --> 00:10:18.809 For from that day on, he remained 00:10:18.809 --> 00:10:21.809 reciting the words of Allah, the Almighty, 00:10:21.809 --> 00:10:24.809 which were revealed regarding him, and whenever he recited them, 00:10:24.809 --> 00:10:28.809 his eyes would well up with joy at Allah’s acceptance of his repentance. 00:10:28.809 --> 00:10:33.370 "Had he come to me, 00:10:33.370 --> 00:10:35.370 I would have sought forgiveness
