A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the senior Companions and among the nobles of the Ansar.
I am the leader of the Khazraj.
I was renowned for my courage and generosity.
I was one of the twelve leaders at the Pledge of al-'Aqabah.
I strove alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him, in all his military expeditions.
I dedicated my wealth to the service of Islam and the Muslims.
I was also known for my intense sense of honor.
I never married a woman who was not a virgin.
And I never divorced a woman.
So that no one would dare to marry her after me.
During the Battle of Hunayn.
When the Muslims finished the battle victorious.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, began.
Distributing the spoils among the Muslims.
He began giving to those whose hearts were to be reconciled.
They were those nobles.
Who had recently entered Islam from among the people of Makkah.
He also gave to the poor among the Muhajirun.
But he did not give my people, the Ansar.
Anything from the spoils of this battle.
I heard my people whispering about this matter.
They were troubled by the Messenger of Allah’s neglect of them.
So I went to the Prophet, peace be upon him.
And I said, "O Messenger of Allah."
"This group of the Ansar."
"Have felt hurt in their hearts regarding you."
"Because of what you did with this booty that you acquired."
"You distributed it among your own people."
"And you gave great gifts to the tribes of the Arabs."
"Yet this group of the Ansar received nothing of it."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me.
"And where do you stand on this?"
I lowered my head and said.
"I am but one of my people, O Messenger of Allah."
He, peace be upon him, said.
"Then gather your people for me."
"And let no one else enter with them."
So I gathered my people, the Ansar.
And I informed the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
He came to us, peace be upon him.
While he was smiling.
He said, "O assembly of the Ansar."
"What is this statement that has reached me regarding you?"
"And this hurt you have felt in your hearts toward me?"
"Did I not come to you while you were astray, and Allah guided you?"
"And in need, and Allah enriched you?"
"And enemies, and Allah brought your hearts together?"
We said.
"Indeed."
"Allah and His Messenger are more gracious and more generous."
The Messenger, peace be upon him, said.
"Will you not answer me, O assembly of the Ansar?"
We said.
"How shall we answer you, O Messenger of Allah?"
"To Allah and His Messenger belong all grace and generosity."
The Messenger, peace be upon him, said.
"By Allah, if you wished, you could have said."
"And you would have spoken the truth and been believed."
"You came to us belied, and we believed you."
"Forsaken, and we aided you."
"Destitute, and we comforted you."
"And driven out, and we sheltered you."
"Do you feel hurt, O assembly of the Ansar, in your hearts."
"Over a small portion of this world."
"With which I sought to reconcile a people so they might embrace Islam."
"While I entrusted you to your Islam?"
"Are you not satisfied, O assembly of the Ansar."
"That the people go away with sheep and camels."
"While you return with the Messenger of Allah to your dwellings?"
"By Him in whose hand is my soul."
"Were it not for the migration."
"I would have been one of the Ansar."
"And if the people took a mountain pass."
"I would take the pass of the Ansar."
"O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar."
"And the children of the Ansar."
"And the children of the children of the Ansar."
We wept until our beards were soaked.
And we all said.
"We are satisfied with the Messenger of Allah as our portion and share."
"We are satisfied with the Messenger of Allah as our portion and share."
Thus, Allah preserved the strength of the Muslims.
Our souls were at peace.
And we knew our standing with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
