00:00:33.210 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:00:47.640 --> 00:00:50.640 The young 'Umayr ibn Sa'd al-Ansari tasted 00:00:50.640 --> 00:00:54.640 the cup of orphanhood and poverty from his earliest youth, 00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:59.640 for his father had passed on to his Lord without leaving him wealth or a provider. 00:00:59.640 --> 00:01:04.640 However, his mother soon married a wealthy man from the Aws tribe, 00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:06.640 known as al-Julas ibn Suwayd. 00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:10.640 He took in her son 'Umayr and brought him into his care. 00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:15.640 'Umayr experienced such kindness, excellent care, and tender affection from al-Julas 00:01:15.640 --> 00:01:18.640 that it made him forget he was an orphan. 00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:22.640 'Umayr loved al-Julas with the love of a son for his father, 00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:26.640 just as al-Julas was devoted to 'Umayr with the passion of a father for his son. 00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:33.640 As 'Umayr grew and matured, al-Julas’s love and admiration for him increased, 00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:37.640 due to the signs of intelligence and nobility he saw in him, 00:01:37.640 --> 00:01:40.640 which were evident in every one of his actions, 00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:46.640 and the traits of honesty and truthfulness that appeared in all his conduct. 00:01:46.640 --> 00:01:49.640 The youth 'Umayr ibn Sa'd embraced Islam 00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:54.640 while he was still young, having barely passed his tenth year. 00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:59.640 Faith found a vacant place in his heart, so it took hold of him, 00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:03.640 and Islam found in his pure, transparent soul 00:02:03.640 --> 00:02:07.640 fertile soil, so it permeated its depths. 00:02:07.640 --> 00:02:14.639 Despite his tender age, he would never miss a prayer behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:21.639 His mother would be filled with joy whenever she saw him going to the mosque or returning from it, 00:02:21.639 --> 00:02:24.639 sometimes with her husband and sometimes alone. 00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:30.639 The life of the young 'Umayr ibn Sa'd continued in this happy and peaceful manner, 00:02:30.639 --> 00:02:36.639 with nothing to disturb its serenity or mar its joy, 00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:44.639 until Allah willed that the young lad be exposed to one of the most intense and severe trials, 00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:50.639 and to be tested with a test rarely experienced by one of his age. 00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:58.639 In the ninth year after the Hijrah, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, announced his intention to campaign against the Romans in Tabuk, 00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:03.639 and commanded the Muslims to prepare and equip themselves for it. 00:03:03.639 --> 00:03:09.639 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, whenever he intended to go on an expedition, would not disclose it, 00:03:09.639 --> 00:03:16.639 and would imply that he was heading in a direction other than his actual destination, except for the expedition of Tabuk, 00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:22.639 for he clarified it to the people due to the great distance, the extreme hardship, and the strength of the enemy, 00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:25.639 so that the people would be fully aware of their situation, 00:03:25.639 --> 00:03:29.639 and take the necessary precautions and make the necessary preparations. 00:03:29.639 --> 00:03:34.639 Even though summer had arrived and the heat had intensified, 00:03:34.639 --> 00:03:38.639 and the fruits had ripened and the shade had become pleasant, 00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:42.639 and souls had inclined toward relaxation and lethargy, 00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:49.639 despite all of that, the Muslims answered the call of their Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:52.639 and began to prepare and equip themselves. 00:03:52.639 --> 00:03:57.639 However, a group of hypocrites began to dampen spirits, 00:03:57.639 --> 00:04:01.639 weaken resolve, and stir up doubts, 00:04:01.639 --> 00:04:05.639 casting aspersions on the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:04:05.639 --> 00:04:11.639 and uttering in their private gatherings words that branded them with clear disbelief. 00:04:11.639 --> 00:04:15.669 On one of the days preceding the departure of the army, 00:04:15.669 --> 00:04:21.670 the youth 'Umayr ibn Sa'd returned home after performing prayer in the mosque, 00:04:21.670 --> 00:04:27.670 his soul filled with a bright array of images of the Muslims' sacrifice and generosity, 00:04:27.670 --> 00:04:30.670 which he had seen with his own eyes and heard with his own ears. 00:04:30.670 --> 00:04:33.670 He had seen the women of the Muhajirun and the Ansar 00:04:33.670 --> 00:04:37.670 approaching the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:04:38.670 --> 00:04:41.670 taking off their jewelry and placing it before him, 00:04:41.670 --> 00:04:45.670 so that the army fighting in the cause of Allah could be equipped with its value. 00:04:45.670 --> 00:04:48.670 He saw with his own eyes 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:04:48.670 --> 00:04:52.670 bringing a pouch containing a thousand gold dinars, 00:04:52.670 --> 00:04:56.670 and presenting it to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:04:56.670 --> 00:04:58.670 He witnessed 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:04:58.670 --> 00:05:02.670 carrying on his shoulder two hundred ounces of gold, 00:05:02.670 --> 00:05:05.670 and placing it before the noble Prophet. 00:05:05.670 --> 00:05:09.670 Indeed, he even saw a man offering his bedding for sale 00:05:09.670 --> 00:05:14.670 to buy with its price a sword to fight in the cause of Allah. 00:05:14.670 --> 00:05:18.670 'Umayr began to recall these unique and magnificent images, 00:05:18.670 --> 00:05:25.670 and wondered at al-Julas's hesitation to prepare for the departure with the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:25.670 --> 00:05:30.670 and his delay in giving, despite his ability and wealth. 00:05:30.670 --> 00:05:34.670 As if 'Umayr wanted to stir the resolve of al-Julas 00:05:34.670 --> 00:05:36.670 and ignite zeal in his soul, 00:05:36.670 --> 00:05:40.670 he began to tell him the news of what he had heard and seen, 00:05:40.670 --> 00:05:43.670 especially the story of those believers 00:05:43.670 --> 00:05:48.670 who came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:48.670 --> 00:05:53.670 and asked him with anguish to include them in the army fighting in the cause of Allah, 00:05:53.670 --> 00:05:59.670 but the Prophet turned them away because he found no mounts to carry them on, 00:05:59.670 --> 00:06:03.670 so they turned back with their eyes overflowing with tears of sorrow, 00:06:03.670 --> 00:06:07.670 because they could not find the means to fulfill their wish for Jihad, 00:06:07.670 --> 00:06:10.670 and realize their longing for martyrdom. 00:06:10.670 --> 00:06:14.670 But no sooner had al-Julas heard what 'Umayr said, 00:06:14.670 --> 00:06:20.670 than a word escaped his mouth that shattered the believer's composure, 00:06:20.670 --> 00:06:26.670 for he heard him say: "If Muhammad is truthful in what he claims of prophethood, 00:06:26.670 --> 00:06:28.670 then we are worse than donkeys." 00:06:28.670 --> 00:06:31.670 'Umayr was stunned by what he heard, 00:06:31.670 --> 00:06:35.670 for he never thought that a man with the intellect and age of al-Julas 00:06:35.670 --> 00:06:38.670 would let such a word escape his lips, 00:06:38.670 --> 00:06:41.670 a word that casts its speaker out of faith entirely, 00:06:41.670 --> 00:06:45.670 and enters him into disbelief through its widest gates. 00:06:45.670 --> 00:06:48.670 And just as precise calculating machines function 00:06:48.670 --> 00:06:51.670 in computing the problems presented to them, 00:06:51.670 --> 00:06:54.670 the mind of the youth 'Umayr ibn Sa'd began 00:06:54.670 --> 00:06:57.670 to think about what he must do. 00:06:57.670 --> 00:07:01.670 He saw that remaining silent about al-Julas and covering for him 00:07:01.670 --> 00:07:03.670 was a betrayal of Allah and His Messenger, 00:07:03.670 --> 00:07:07.670 and a harm to the Islam against which the hypocrites were plotting 00:07:07.670 --> 00:07:09.670 and conspiring. 00:07:09.670 --> 00:07:12.670 And that broadcasting what he had heard was an act of disobedience toward the man 00:07:12.670 --> 00:07:15.670 who held the place of a father in his heart, 00:07:15.670 --> 00:07:19.670 and repaying his kindness with evil. 00:07:19.670 --> 00:07:21.670 For he was the one who sheltered him from orphanhood, 00:07:21.670 --> 00:07:23.670 enriched him from poverty, 00:07:23.670 --> 00:07:25.670 and compensated him for the loss of his father. 00:07:25.670 --> 00:07:30.670 The youth had to choose between two matters, the easier of which was bitter. 00:07:30.670 --> 00:07:32.670 And he chose quickly. 00:07:32.670 --> 00:07:34.670 He turned to al-Julas and said, 00:07:34.670 --> 00:07:36.670 "By Allah, O al-Julas, 00:07:36.670 --> 00:07:40.670 there was no one on the face of the earth after Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:40.670 --> 00:07:42.670 more beloved to me than you. 00:07:42.670 --> 00:07:44.670 You are the dearest of people to me, 00:07:44.670 --> 00:07:46.670 and the one to whom I owe the greatest favor. 00:07:46.670 --> 00:07:49.670 But you have said a statement 00:07:49.670 --> 00:07:51.670 that if I mention it, I will expose you, 00:07:51.670 --> 00:07:53.670 and if I hide it, 00:07:53.670 --> 00:07:56.670 I will betray my trust and destroy my own soul and religion. 00:07:56.670 --> 00:08:01.670 I have resolved to go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:01.670 --> 00:08:03.670 and inform him of what you said, 00:08:03.670 --> 00:08:06.670 so be aware of your situation." 00:08:06.670 --> 00:08:09.670 The youth 'Umayr ibn Sa'd went to the mosque 00:08:09.670 --> 00:08:12.670 and informed the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:12.670 --> 00:08:14.670 of what he had heard from al-Julas ibn Suwayd. 00:08:14.670 --> 00:08:19.670 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, kept him with him, 00:08:19.670 --> 00:08:22.670 and sent one of his Companions to summon al-Julas. 00:08:22.670 --> 00:08:24.670 It was only a short while 00:08:24.670 --> 00:08:29.670 before al-Julas arrived, greeted the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:29.670 --> 00:08:31.670 and sat before him. 00:08:31.670 --> 00:08:34.669 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him, 00:08:34.669 --> 00:08:38.669 "What is this statement that 'Umayr ibn Sa'd heard from you?" 00:08:38.669 --> 00:08:40.669 And he mentioned to him what he had said. 00:08:40.669 --> 00:08:41.669 He said, 00:08:41.669 --> 00:08:44.669 "He lied against me, O Messenger of Allah, and fabricated it, 00:08:44.669 --> 00:08:47.669 for I did not utter any of that." 00:08:47.669 --> 00:08:53.669 The Companions began to shift their gazes between al-Julas and his ward 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, 00:08:53.669 --> 00:08:57.669 as if they wanted to read on the pages of their faces 00:08:57.669 --> 00:08:59.669 what their hearts were concealing. 00:08:59.669 --> 00:09:01.669 They began to whisper, 00:09:01.669 --> 00:09:04.669 and one of those in whose hearts was a disease said, 00:09:04.669 --> 00:09:06.669 "A young man who has gone astray; 00:09:06.669 --> 00:09:09.669 he insists on harming the one who was kind to him." 00:09:09.669 --> 00:09:11.669 Others said, 00:09:11.669 --> 00:09:14.669 "Rather, he is a youth who grew up in the obedience of Allah, 00:09:14.669 --> 00:09:18.669 and the features of his face speak of his truthfulness." 00:09:18.669 --> 00:09:22.669 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned to 'Umayr, 00:09:22.669 --> 00:09:25.669 and saw his face flushed with blood, 00:09:25.669 --> 00:09:29.669 and tears streaming down from his eyes, 00:09:29.669 --> 00:09:33.669 falling onto his cheeks and chest as he said, 00:09:33.669 --> 00:09:37.669 "O Allah, reveal to Your Prophet the truth of what I have spoken." 00:09:37.669 --> 00:09:41.669 "O Allah, reveal to Your Prophet the truth of what I have spoken." 00:09:42.669 --> 00:09:44.669 Then al-Julas stood up and said, 00:09:44.669 --> 00:09:48.669 "What I mentioned to you, O Messenger of Allah, is the truth, 00:09:48.669 --> 00:09:51.669 and if you wish, we can take an oath before you, 00:09:51.669 --> 00:09:53.669 and I swear by Allah 00:09:53.669 --> 00:09:57.669 that I did not say anything of what 'Umayr reported to you." 00:09:57.669 --> 00:09:59.669 No sooner had he finished his oath, 00:09:59.669 --> 00:10:03.669 and the people's eyes began to shift from him to 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, 00:10:03.669 --> 00:10:08.669 than tranquility descended upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:10:08.669 --> 00:10:11.669 The Companions knew it was the revelation, 00:10:11.669 --> 00:10:15.669 so they remained in their places and their limbs became still, 00:10:15.669 --> 00:10:17.669 and silence prevailed. 00:10:17.669 --> 00:10:21.669 Their eyes were fixed on the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:10:21.669 --> 00:10:25.669 Here, fear and trepidation appeared on al-Julas, 00:10:25.669 --> 00:10:29.669 and longing and anticipation appeared on 'Umayr. 00:10:29.669 --> 00:10:31.669 Everyone remained like that 00:10:31.669 --> 00:10:35.669 until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, recovered, 00:10:35.669 --> 00:10:37.669 and recited the words of the Almighty and Exalted: 00:10:37.669 --> 00:10:40.669 Al-Julas trembled from the horror of what he heard, 00:10:40.669 --> 00:10:43.669 and his tongue nearly froze from panic. 00:10:43.669 --> 00:10:47.669 Then he turned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said, 00:10:47.669 --> 00:10:49.669 "Rather, I repent, O Messenger of Allah, 00:10:49.669 --> 00:10:51.669 rather, I repent. 00:10:51.669 --> 00:10:53.669 'Umayr spoke the truth, O Messenger of Allah, 00:10:53.669 --> 00:10:55.669 and I was among the liars. 00:10:55.669 --> 00:10:57.669 I ask Allah to accept my repentance. 00:10:57.669 --> 00:11:00.669 I have made a mistake in that, O Messenger of Allah." 00:11:00.669 --> 00:11:04.669 Here, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned 00:11:04.669 --> 00:11:06.669 to the youth 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, 00:11:06.669 --> 00:11:11.669 and found tears of joy wetting his face, which was radiant with the light of faith. 00:11:11.669 --> 00:11:14.669 The Messenger extended his noble hand to his ear, 00:11:14.669 --> 00:11:17.669 held it gently, and said, 00:11:17.669 --> 00:11:20.669 "Your ear was faithful, O young man, in what it heard, 00:11:20.669 --> 00:11:22.669 and your Lord has confirmed your truthfulness." 00:11:22.669 --> 00:11:25.669 Al-Julas returned to the fold of Islam, 00:11:25.669 --> 00:11:27.669 and his Islam became sincere. 00:11:27.669 --> 00:11:29.669 The Companions knew of the improvement of his state 00:11:29.669 --> 00:11:32.669 by the kindness he lavished upon 'Umayr. 00:11:32.669 --> 00:11:35.669 He would say whenever 'Umayr was mentioned, 00:11:35.669 --> 00:11:38.669 "May Allah reward him with good on my behalf, 00:11:38.669 --> 00:11:40.669 for he saved me from disbelief, 00:11:40.669 --> 00:11:43.669 and freed my neck from the Fire." 00:11:43.669 --> 00:11:44.769 And furthermore, 00:11:44.769 --> 00:11:49.769 this is not the brightest image in the life of the young Companion 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, 00:11:49.769 --> 00:11:52.769 nor the most brilliant. 00:11:52.769 --> 00:11:56.769 Rather, there are images in his life that are even more radiant and beautiful. 00:11:56.769 --> 00:11:58.769 So, until another meeting 00:11:58.769 --> 00:12:01.769 with 'Umayr ibn Sa'd in his youth. 00:12:01.769 --> 00:12:05.590 'Umayr ibn Sa'd, 00:12:05.590 -->
