The Musk of Discourse.
By Sheikh Usama Bahr.
May Allah preserve him.
Whoever obeys the Lord dissolves into the sweetest of feelings.
The heavy-laden date palm for Abu al-Dahdah.
There was, in the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
an orphaned boy.
He had an orchard adjacent to the orchard of a man.
The boy wanted to build a wall,
but a date palm belonging to the man stood in the way of this wall.
So he went to him and said,
"O my brother,
you have many date palms in your orchard,
so it would not harm you to give me this palm tree that obstructs my wall."
The man replied,
"No, by Allah, I will not give you the palm tree."
He then said, "Sell it to me."
The man replied,
"No, by Allah, I will not do any of that."
So this orphan went to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
my orchard is next to the orchard of so-and-so,
and I wanted to build a wall,
but a palm tree belonging to this man obstructed me, and he refused me."
"So intercede for me with him, perhaps he will give me the palm tree."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"Call him."
When the man came,
the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to him,
"Give this palm tree to your brother."
He said, "No."
He repeated the request to him three times,
and the man refused.
Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"Give him the palm tree,
and you shall have a palm tree in Paradise for it."
The man said, "No."
Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, fell silent.
Abu al-Dahdah stood up when he heard this offer,
and said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
what do you think if I bought this man's palm tree
and then gave it to the orphan?
Would I have a palm tree in Paradise?"
He said, "Yes."
So Abu al-Dahdah offered his own orchard,
which contained six hundred palm trees, a well, and a house.
Abu al-Dahdah said,
"O owner of the palm tree,
do you know my orchard?"
He replied, "Yes, I know it.
Who could be ignorant of it?
Your orchard has excellent dates."
He said,
"O so-and-so,
take my entire orchard and all that is in it,
and give me this palm tree."
The man turned to the people and said,
"Do you bear witness to this sale?"
They said, "Yes."
The man said,
"Yes, I have taken the orchard and given you the palm tree."
Abu al-Dahdah turned to the orphan and said,
"O so-and-so, the palm tree is yours from me;
take it."
Then Abu al-Dahdah turned to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and said,
"O Messenger of Allah,
do I now have a palm tree in Paradise?"
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
"How many heavy-laden date palms does Abu al-Dahdah have in Paradise!"
Then Abu al-Dahdah went out to his family to bring them out of the orchard.
He said,
"O Umm al-Dahdah, I have sold the orchard."
She asked,
"How did you sell the orchard?"
He said,
"I sold it to my Lord for a palm tree in Paradise."
She said,
"A profitable trade, O Abu al-Dahdah!"
Then she took her children and led them out of the orchard gate.
She then searched their pockets,
and whoever had any fruit with them, she took it out,
placed it back in the orchard,
and said,
"This is not ours;
this belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds."
Whatever Allah commands, He brings to pass.
