We were astonished at his reaction, 00:01:22.859 --> 00:01:31.859 And the people said, "Look at this old man: the Messenger of Allah is informing us of a servant whom Allah gave a choice 00:01:31.859 --> 00:01:35.859 Between granting him the splendor of this world and that which is with Him, 00:01:35.859 --> 00:01:40.859 Yet he says, 'May our fathers and mothers be ransomed for you!'" 00:01:40.859 --> 00:01:45.859 But it was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who was the servant given the choice, 00:01:45.859 --> 00:01:48.859 And Abu Bakr was the most knowledgeable among us regarding him. 00:01:48.859 --> 00:01:58.120 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Indeed, the person who has favored me most in his companionship and his wealth is Abu Bakr. 00:01:58.120 --> 00:02:04.120 Were I to take an intimate friend (khalil) from my Ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr, 00:02:04.120 --> 00:02:11.120 But the brotherhood of Islam suffices. Let no private doorway (*khawkhah*) remain open into the mosque except the doorway of Abu Bakr." 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:18.379 Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his *Sahih* from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 00:02:18.379 --> 00:02:26.379 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out during his fatal illness with a cloth wrapped around his head, 00:02:26.379 --> 00:02:31.379 And he sat upon the pulpit, praised Allah, and extolled Him. 00:02:31.379 --> 00:02:40.379 Then he said, "Indeed, there is no one among the people who has favored me more with his life and his wealth than Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafah. 00:02:40.379 --> 00:02:47.379 Were I to take an intimate friend from mankind, I would have taken Abu Bakr as an intimate friend, 00:02:47.379 --> 00:02:50.379 But the bond of Islam is superior. 00:02:50.379 --> 00:02:56.379 Close every private doorway leading into this mosque except the doorway of Abu Bakr." 00:02:56.379 --> 00:03:03.659 Imam al-Bukhari also narrated in his *Sahih* from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 00:03:03.659 --> 00:03:09.659 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out during his fatal illness 00:03:09.659 --> 00:03:13.659 Draped in a mantle, with an oily dark cloth wrapped around his head— 00:03:13.659 --> 00:03:19.659 Meaning his head was bound with a black cloth—until he sat upon the pulpit. 00:03:19.659 --> 00:03:24.659 He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "To proceed: 00:03:24.659 --> 00:03:33.659 Indeed, the people will increase while the Ansar will decrease, until they become among mankind like salt in food. 00:03:33.659 --> 00:03:39.699 So whoever among you is appointed to an authority whereby he can harm some people or benefit others, 00:03:39.699 --> 00:03:43.699 Let him accept from their good-doers and overlook their wrongdoers." 00:03:43.699 --> 00:03:49.699 That was the last gathering in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat. 00:03:49.699 --> 00:03:53.819 Imam Ahmad narrated in his *Musnad* with an authentic chain of transmission 00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:58.819 From a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him): 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:03.819 The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood as a speaker that day, 00:04:03.819 --> 00:04:06.819 Praised Allah and extolled Him, 00:04:06.819 --> 00:04:10.819 And sought forgiveness for the martyrs who were slain on the day of Uhud. 00:04:10.819 --> 00:04:15.819 Then he said, "O gathering of the Emigrants (Muhajirun), you will increase in number, 00:04:15.819 --> 00:04:18.819 Whereas the Ansar will not increase. 00:04:18.819 --> 00:04:22.819 The Ansar are indeed my innermost repository and sanctuary— 00:04:22.819 --> 00:04:25.889 Meaning my close confidants and inner circle. 00:04:25.889 --> 00:04:29.889 So honor the noble among them and overlook their wrongdoers, 00:04:29.889 --> 00:04:34.889 For they have fulfilled their obligation, and there only remains that which is owed to them." 00:04:34.889 --> 00:04:36.920 Ibn Ishaq said: 00:04:36.920 --> 00:04:39.920 Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me 00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:43.920 From 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and other scholars 00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:46.920 That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:04:46.920 --> 00:04:50.920 Noticed that the people were hesitating regarding the expedition of Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:04:50.920 --> 00:04:52.920 While he was in severe pain. 00:04:52.920 --> 00:04:56.920 So he went out with a cloth bound around his head until he sat upon the pulpit. 00:04:56.920 --> 00:05:00.920 The people had been criticizing Usamah's leadership, saying, 00:05:00.920 --> 00:05:05.920 "He has appointed a young youth over the prominent Emigrants and Ansar!" 00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:10.139 He praised Allah and extolled Him as He deserves, 00:05:10.139 --> 00:05:13.139 Then said, "O people! 00:05:13.139 --> 00:05:16.139 Dispatch the expedition of Usamah! 00:05:16.139 --> 00:05:19.139 By my life, if you criticize his leadership, 00:05:19.139 --> 00:05:22.139 You have indeed criticized the leadership of his father before him. 00:05:22.139 --> 00:05:25.139 Yet he is truly worthy of leadership, 00:05:25.139 --> 00:05:28.139 Just as his father was worthy of it." 00:05:28.139 --> 00:05:31.430 The two Shaykhs narrated in their *Sahih*s, 00:05:31.430 --> 00:05:34.430 As well as Imam Ahmad in his *Musnad*, 00:05:34.430 --> 00:05:36.430 With the wording being Ahmad's, 00:05:36.430 --> 00:05:39.430 From Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 00:05:39.430 --> 00:05:42.430 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up 00:05:42.430 --> 00:05:44.430 Among the people and said, 00:05:44.430 --> 00:05:47.430 "Behold! You are finding fault with Usamah 00:05:47.430 --> 00:05:49.430 And criticizing his leadership, 00:05:49.430 --> 00:05:52.430 Just as you did with his father before. 00:05:52.430 --> 00:05:55.430 Yet he was truly worthy of leadership, 00:05:56.430 --> 00:05:59.430 And he was among the most beloved of all people to me, 00:05:59.430 --> 00:06:02.430 And this son of his after him 00:06:02.430 --> 00:06:04.430 Is among the most beloved of people to me. 00:06:04.430 --> 00:06:06.430 So treat him well, 00:06:06.430 --> 00:06:12.279 For he is among the best of you." 00:06:12.279 --> 00:06:17.279 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) Leading the People in Prayer 00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:21.889 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never ceased 00:06:21.889 --> 00:06:24.889 Being eager to lead the people in prayer, 00:06:24.889 --> 00:06:27.889 Despite the intense pain he was experiencing, 00:06:27.889 --> 00:06:31.889 Until the illness overcame him and rendered him unable to go out. 00:06:31.889 --> 00:06:35.889 At that point, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered 00:06:35.889 --> 00:06:39.889 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq to lead the people in prayer. She (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, 00:06:59.180 --> 00:07:00.180 "Certainly. 00:07:00.180 --> 00:07:04.209 The Prophet (peace be upon him) grew heavy with illness, 00:07:04.209 --> 00:07:07.209 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?' 00:07:07.209 --> 00:07:10.209 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you.' 00:07:10.209 --> 00:07:14.209 He said, 'Put water in the basin for me.' 00:07:14.209 --> 00:07:16.209 She said: We did so, 00:07:16.209 --> 00:07:19.209 And he bathed, then attempted to stand up with effort, 00:07:19.209 --> 00:07:21.209 Meaning to rise with exertion, 00:07:21.209 --> 00:07:23.209 But he fainted. 00:07:23.209 --> 00:07:25.209 Then he regained consciousness 00:07:25.209 --> 00:07:28.209 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?' 00:07:28.209 --> 00:07:33.209 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:07:33.209 --> 00:07:37.300 He said, 'Put water in the basin for me.' 00:07:37.300 --> 00:07:40.300 She said: He sat and bathed, 00:07:40.300 --> 00:07:42.300 Then attempted to stand up, 00:07:42.300 --> 00:07:44.300 But he fainted again. 00:07:44.300 --> 00:07:46.300 Then he regained consciousness 00:07:46.300 --> 00:07:49.300 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?' 00:07:49.300 --> 00:07:53.300 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:07:54.300 --> 00:07:56.300 He said, 00:07:56.300 --> 00:07:58.300 'Put water in the basin for me.' 00:07:58.300 --> 00:08:00.300 So he sat and bathed, 00:08:00.300 --> 00:08:02.300 Then attempted to stand up, 00:08:02.300 --> 00:08:04.300 But he fainted. 00:08:04.300 --> 00:08:05.300 Then he regained consciousness 00:08:05.300 --> 00:08:08.300 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?' 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:12.300 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:08:12.300 --> 00:08:14.300 The people were remaining in the mosque, 00:08:14.300 --> 00:08:17.300 Waiting for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) 00:08:17.300 --> 00:08:20.300 For the late night ('Isha') prayer. 00:08:20.300 --> 00:08:22.370 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent word 00:08:23.370 --> 00:08:26.370 To Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:08:26.370 --> 00:08:28.370 Instructing him to lead the people in prayer. 00:08:28.370 --> 00:08:30.370 The messenger came to him— 00:08:30.370 --> 00:08:32.370 Meaning Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him)— 00:08:32.370 --> 00:08:34.370 And said, 00:08:34.370 --> 00:08:37.370 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:08:37.370 --> 00:08:40.370 Orders you to lead the people in prayer.' 00:08:40.370 --> 00:08:43.370 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:08:43.370 --> 00:08:47.370 Who was a tender-hearted man, said, 00:08:47.370 --> 00:08:49.370 'O 'Umar, lead the people in prayer!' 00:08:49.370 --> 00:08:51.370 But 'Umar replied to him, 'You have the greater right to it.' 00:08:51.370 --> 00:08:56.399 So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayers during those days. 00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:01.460 Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some lightness in his condition, 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:07.460 So he came out supported between two men—one of them being al-'Abbas—for the Zuhr prayer. 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:13.590 The author noted in the margin: and the other was 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). 00:09:13.590 --> 00:09:17.720 Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer, 00:09:17.720 --> 00:09:23.720 And when Abu Bakr noticed him, he began to step back, 00:09:23.720 --> 00:09:28.750 But the Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to him not to step back, 00:09:28.750 --> 00:09:32.750 And said to the two men, "Seat me beside him." 00:09:32.750 --> 00:09:35.750 So they seated him beside Abu Bakr. 00:09:35.750 --> 00:09:42.750 Abu Bakr continued praying standing, following the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him), 00:09:42.750 --> 00:09:45.750 And the people followed the prayer of Abu Bakr, 00:09:45.750 --> 00:09:49.750 While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seated. 00:09:49.750 --> 00:09:58.409 The Number of Prayers Led by Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) 00:09:58.409 --> 00:10:06.019 Imam al-Bayhaqi said: What is indicated by the hadith of Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, 00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:09.019 Then the hadith of 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Utbah Then led them in five prayers on Friday, 00:10:28.019 --> 00:10:31.019 Then five prayers on Saturday, 00:10:31.019 --> 00:10:34.019 Then five prayers on Sunday, 00:10:34.019 --> 00:10:37.019 Then led them in the Fajr prayer on Monday, 00:10:37.019 --> 00:10:42.019 And the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away on that day. 00:10:42.019 --> 00:10:49.080 In between those days, when he felt some lightness, he had come out for the Zuhr prayer— 00:10:49.080 --> 00:10:53.080 Either on Saturday or on Sunday— 00:10:53.080 --> 00:10:57.080 After Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had already begun the prayer with them. 00:10:57.080 --> 00:11:02.080 So the Prophet began his prayer, and they aligned their prayer with his, 00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:05.080 While he was seated and they were standing. 00:11:05.080 --> 00:11:09.110 He also once prayed behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), 00:11:10.110 --> 00:11:14.110 According to the narration of Nu'aym ibn Abi Hind and those
