and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:00:56.420 --> 00:01:00.420 For is there anyone in the Ummah of Islam who does not know Abu Hurayrah? 00:01:00.420 --> 00:01:04.650 In the pre-Islamic era of ignorance, people used to call him 'Abd Shams. 00:01:04.650 --> 00:01:10.650 But when Allah honored him with Islam and blessed him with meeting the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, 00:01:10.650 --> 00:01:12.650 he asked him, "What is your name?" 00:01:12.650 --> 00:01:14.650 He replied, "'Abd Shams." 00:01:14.650 --> 00:01:17.650 The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 00:01:17.650 --> 00:01:19.650 "Rather, 'Abd al-Rahman." 00:01:19.650 --> 00:01:21.650 He said, "Yes, 'Abd al-Rahman, 00:01:21.650 --> 00:01:24.650 may my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah." 00:01:24.650 --> 00:01:27.650 As for his kunyah, 'Abu Hurayrah' (Father of the Kitten), 00:01:27.650 --> 00:01:33.650 its origin was that during his childhood he had a small kitten he used to play with, 00:01:33.650 --> 00:01:36.650 so his peers began calling him Abu Hurayrah. 00:01:36.650 --> 00:01:40.650 This nickname spread and became so widespread that it overtook his real name. 00:01:40.650 --> 00:01:46.810 When his life became intertwined with that of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, 00:01:46.810 --> 00:01:49.810 the Prophet often called him 'Abu Hirr,' 00:01:49.810 --> 00:01:51.810 out of friendliness and affection. 00:01:51.810 --> 00:01:54.810 Consequently, he came to prefer 'Abu Hirr' over 'Abu Hurayrah', 00:01:55.810 --> 00:01:56.810 and he would say: 00:01:56.810 --> 00:01:59.810 "My beloved, the Messenger of Allah, called me by it. 00:01:59.810 --> 00:02:00.810 Besides, a *hirr* is male, 00:02:00.810 --> 00:02:02.810 while a *hurayrah* is female, 00:02:02.810 --> 00:02:05.870 and the male is better than the female." 00:02:05.870 --> 00:02:09.870 Abu Hurayrah embraced Islam at the hands of al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr al-Dawsi, 00:02:09.870 --> 00:02:14.870 and remained in the land of his people, Daws, until six years after the Hijrah, 00:02:14.870 --> 00:02:20.870 when he arrived with a delegation of his people to meet the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in Madinah. 00:02:20.870 --> 00:02:26.870 The young Dawsi devoted himself entirely to serving the Messenger of Allah and keeping his company. 00:02:26.870 --> 00:02:28.870 He took the mosque as his dwelling, 00:02:28.870 --> 00:02:31.870 and the Prophet as his teacher and leader. 00:02:31.870 --> 00:02:35.870 During the Prophet's lifetime, he had neither a wife nor children; 00:02:35.870 --> 00:02:39.870 he had only an elderly mother who stubbornly clung to polytheism. 00:02:39.870 --> 00:02:42.870 He never ceased calling her to Islam, 00:02:42.870 --> 00:02:44.870 out of compassion and filial devotion toward her, 00:02:44.870 --> 00:02:47.939 but she would turn away from him and rebuff him. 00:02:47.939 --> 00:02:51.939 He would leave her with sorrow tearing at his heart. 00:02:51.939 --> 00:02:56.939 One day, he invited her to believe in Allah and His Messenger, 00:02:56.939 --> 00:03:02.030 but she said something about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that deeply saddened and distressed him. 00:03:02.030 --> 00:03:07.030 So he went weeping to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. 00:03:07.030 --> 00:03:10.030 The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked him, 00:03:10.030 --> 00:03:13.030 "What makes you weep, O Abu Hurayrah?" 00:03:13.030 --> 00:03:19.030 He said, "I have never ceased calling my mother to Islam, but she persistently refuses me. 00:03:19.030 --> 00:03:23.030 Today, I called her again, and she made me hear words concerning you that I abhor. 00:03:23.030 --> 00:03:28.060 Pray to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, to incline the heart of Abu Hurayrah's mother toward Islam." 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:32.060 So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed for her. 00:03:32.060 --> 00:03:35.060 Abu Hurayrah said: "I went back home, 00:03:35.060 --> 00:03:37.060 and found the door closed. 00:03:37.060 --> 00:03:40.060 I heard the splashing of water. 00:03:40.060 --> 00:03:45.060 When I went to enter, my mother said, 'Stay where you are, O Abu Hurayrah!' 00:03:45.060 --> 00:03:48.060 Then she put on her garment and said, 'Enter.' 00:03:48.060 --> 00:03:53.060 I entered, and she said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, 00:03:53.060 --> 00:03:57.060 and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.' 00:03:57.060 --> 00:04:02.259 I returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, weeping with joy, 00:04:02.259 --> 00:04:06.259 just as an hour earlier I had wept with grief, and I said: 00:04:06.259 --> 00:04:08.259 'Rejoice, O Messenger of Allah! 00:04:08.259 --> 00:04:10.259 Allah has answered your supplication 00:04:10.259 --> 00:04:13.259 and guided the mother of Abu Hurayrah to Islam.'" 00:04:13.259 --> 00:04:18.480 Abu Hurayrah loved the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, with a love 00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:20.480 that mingled with his very flesh and blood. 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:23.480 He could never gaze at him enough, and he would say: 00:04:23.480 --> 00:04:29.480 "I have never seen anything more radiant or handsome than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; 00:04:29.480 --> 00:04:32.480 it was as though the sun itself coursed across his face." 00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:35.480 He would constantly praise Allah, Blessed and Exalted, 00:04:35.480 --> 00:04:39.480 for blessing him with the companionship of His Prophet and following his religion, 00:04:39.480 --> 00:04:44.480 saying: "Praise be to Allah Who guided Abu Hurayrah to Islam! 00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:49.480 Praise be to Allah Who taught Abu Hurayrah the Qur'an! 00:04:49.480 --> 00:04:56.480 Praise be to Allah Who blessed Abu Hurayrah with the companionship of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him!" 00:04:56.480 --> 00:05:01.509 Just as Abu Hurayrah was devoted to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, 00:05:01.509 --> 00:05:03.509 he was equally devoted to sacred knowledge, 00:05:03.509 --> 00:05:07.509 making it his constant pursuit and ultimate aspiration. 00:05:07.509 --> 00:05:09.699 Zayd ibn Thabit related, saying: 00:05:09.699 --> 00:05:13.699 "While Abu Hurayrah, a companion of mine, and I were in the mosque, 00:05:13.699 --> 00:05:16.699 supplicating Allah the Exalted and remembering Him, 00:05:16.699 --> 00:05:20.699 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came upon us. 00:05:20.699 --> 00:05:23.699 He approached us and sat down among us, 00:05:23.699 --> 00:05:25.699 so we fell silent. 00:05:25.699 --> 00:05:28.699 He said, 'Resume what you were doing.' 00:05:28.699 --> 00:05:32.699 So my companion and I supplicated Allah before Abu Hurayrah, 00:05:32.699 --> 00:05:35.699 and the Messenger kept saying 'Amin' to our prayers. 00:05:35.699 --> 00:05:38.699 Then Abu Hurayrah supplicated, saying: 00:05:38.699 --> 00:05:41.699 'O Allah, I ask You for all that my two companions have asked of You, 00:05:41.699 --> 00:05:44.699 and I ask You for knowledge that will never be forgotten.' 00:05:44.699 --> 00:05:47.699 The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 00:05:47.699 --> 00:05:49.699 'Amin.' 00:05:49.699 --> 00:05:52.699 We then said, 'And we too ask Allah for knowledge that will never be forgotten!' 00:05:52.699 --> 00:05:54.699 But he said, 00:05:54.699 --> 00:05:57.860 'The young Dawsi has beaten you to it.'" 00:05:57.860 --> 00:06:00.860 Just as Abu Hurayrah loved knowledge for himself, 00:06:00.860 --> 00:06:02.860 he loved it for others as well. 00:06:02.860 --> 00:06:06.860 An example of this is when he once passed through the marketplace of Madinah 00:06:06.860 --> 00:06:09.860 and was appalled by people's absorption in worldly pursuits 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:13.860 and their total immersion in buying, selling, taking, and giving. 00:06:13.860 --> 00:06:15.860 He stood before them and said, 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:18.860 "How helpless you are, O people of Madinah!" 00:06:18.860 --> 00:06:22.860 They asked, "What helplessness do you see in us, O Abu Hurayrah?" 00:06:22.860 --> 00:06:26.860 He replied, "The inheritance of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, 00:06:26.860 --> 00:06:29.860 is being distributed, and you are here! 00:06:29.860 --> 00:06:32.860 Why do you not go and take your share?" 00:06:32.860 --> 00:06:35.860 They asked, "And where is it, O Abu Hurayrah?" 00:06:35.860 --> 00:06:37.860 He said, "In the mosque." 00:06:37.860 --> 00:06:39.860 They rushed out quickly, 00:06:39.860 --> 00:06:42.860 and Abu Hurayrah waited for them until they returned. 00:06:42.860 --> 00:06:45.860 When they saw him, they said, "O Abu Hurayrah, 00:06:45.860 --> 00:06:48.860 we went to the mosque and entered it, 00:06:48.860 --> 00:06:50.860 but we did not see anything being distributed!" 00:06:50.860 --> 00:06:52.860 He asked them, 00:06:52.860 --> 00:06:54.860 "Did you not see anyone in the mosque?" 00:06:54.860 --> 00:06:56.860 They said, "Yes, 00:06:56.860 --> 00:06:58.860 we saw people praying, 00:06:58.860 --> 00:07:00.860 people reciting the Qur'an, 00:07:00.860 --> 00:07:03.860 and people discussing the lawful and the unlawful." 00:07:03.860 --> 00:07:05.959 He said, "Woe to you! 00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:09.959 That is the inheritance of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him." 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:14.019 Due to his complete dedication to knowledge 00:07:14.019 --> 00:07:17.019 and his devotion to the gatherings of the Messenger of Allah, Abu Hurayrah endured 00:07:17.019 --> 00:07:21.019 hunger and hardship in living such as no one else experienced. 00:07:21.019 --> 00:07:23.019 Relating about himself, he said: 00:07:23.019 --> 00:07:25.019 "Severe hunger would overtake me, 00:07:26.019 --> 00:07:31.019 to the extent that I would ask a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah about a verse from the Qur'an, 00:07:31.019 --> 00:07:33.019 even though I already knew it, 00:07:33.019 --> 00:07:36.019 merely so that he might take me with him to his home and feed me. 00:07:36.019 --> 00:07:39.019 One day, my hunger grew so intense 00:07:39.019 --> 00:07:42.019 that I bound a stone against my stomach, 00:07:42.019 --> 00:07:44.019 and I sat in the path of the Companions. 00:07:44.019 --> 00:07:46.019 Abu Bakr passed by me, 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:49.019 so I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, 00:07:49.019 --> 00:07:51.019 asking him only so that he might invite me, 00:07:51.019 --> 00:07:53.019 but he did not invite me. 00:07:53.019 --> 00:07:55.019 Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab passed by me, 00:07:55.019 --> 00:07:57.019 and I asked him about a verse, 00:07:57.019 --> 00:07:59.019 but he did not invite me either. 00:07:59.019 --> 00:08:03.019 Finally, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by me, 00:08:03.019 --> 00:08:05.019 and he recognized the hunger upon me. 00:08:05.019 --> 00:08:07.019 He called, 'Abu Hurayrah!' 00:08:07.019 --> 00:08:09.019 I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah!' 00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:11.019 So I followed him. 00:08:11.019 --> 00:08:13.019 I entered the house with him, 00:08:13.019 --> 00:08:15.019 and he found a bowl containing milk. 00:08:15.019 --> 00:08:18.019 He asked his household, 'Where did you get this from?' 00:08:18.019 --> 00:08:19.019 They said, 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:22.019 'So-and-so sent it to you as a gift.' 00:08:22.019 --> 00:08:23.019 He said, 00:08:23.019 --> 00:08:25.019 'O Abu Hurayrah, 00:08:25.019 --> 00:08:28.019 go to the people of the Suffah and summon them.' 00:08:28.019 --> 00:08:31.019 It grieved me that he sent me to invite them, 00:08:31.019 --> 00:08:33.019 and I said to myself, 00:08:33.019 --> 00:08:36.019 'What will this milk do for all the people of the Suffah? 00:08:36.019 --> 00:08:40.019 I had hoped to take a drink from it to regain my strength, 00:08:40.019 --> 00:08:42.019 and then go to them.' 00:08:42.019 --> 00:08:44.019 Nevertheless, I went to the people of the Suffah and invited them, 00:08:44.019 --> 00:08:46.019 and they came. 00:08:46.019 --> 00:08:48.019 When they sat before the Messenger of Allah, he said, 00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:51.019 'Take it, O Abu Hurayrah, and give it to them.' 00:08:51.019 --> 00:08:54.019 So I began handing it to each man, and he would drink until he was satisfied, 00:08:54.019 --> 00:08:57.019 until all of them had drunk. 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:01.019 Then I handed the bowl back to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:09:01.019 --> 00:09:04.019 He lifted his head toward me, smiling, and said, 00:09:04.019 --> 00:09:06.019 'Only you and I remain.' 00:09:06.019 --> 00:09:07.019 I said, 00:09:07.019 --> 00:09:09.019 'You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' 00:09:09.019 --> 00:09:12.019 He said, 'Drink!' So I drank. 00:09:12.019 --> 00:09:15.019 Then he said, 'Drink!' So I drank again. 00:09:15.019 --> 00:09:17.019 He kept telling me to drink, 00:09:17.019 --> 00:09:19.019 and I kept drinking until I said, 00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:21.019 'By the One Who sent you with the truth, 00:09:21.019 --> 00:09:24.090 I can find no room for any more!' 00:09:24.090 --> 00:09:27.149 He then took the vessel and drank the remainder." 00:09:27.149 --> 00:09:30.149 Not long after that, 00:09:30.149 --> 00:09:33.149 abundant wealth poured in upon the Muslims, 00:09:33.149 --> 00:09:36.149 and the spoils of conquest flowed to them. 00:09:36.149 --> 00:09:40.149 Consequently, Abu Hurayrah acquired wealth, a home, furnishings, 00:09:40.149 --> 00:09:42.149 a wife, and children. 00:09:42.149 --> 00:09:46.149 Yet none of that altered his noble character in the least, 00:09:46.149 --> 00:09:49.149 nor did it make him forget his earlier days. 00:09:49.149 --> 00:09:51.149 He would frequently say: 00:09:51.149 --> 00:09:53.149 "I grew up an orphan, 00:09:53.149 --> 00:09:55.149 emigrated as a pauper, 00:09:55.149 --> 00:09:59.149 and worked as a hired hand for Busrah bint Ghazwan in exchange for my daily food: 00:09:59.149 --> 00:10:02.149 I served the company when they halted, 00:10:02.149 --> 00:10:04.149 and led their camels by chanting when they rode. 00:10:04.149 --> 00:10:06.149 Then Allah married her to me! 00:10:06.149 --> 00:10:09.149 So praise be to Allah Who made the religion a pillar of support, 00:10:09.149 --> 00:10:12.149 and made Abu Hurayrah a leader!" 00:10:12.149 --> 00:10:15.149 Abu Hurayrah was appointed governor of Madinah 00:10:15.149 --> 00:10:19.149 by Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan on more than one occasion, 00:10:19.149 --> 00:10:24.149 yet governance did not diminish his good nature or pleasant humor in the least. 00:10:24.149 --> 00:10:28.149 Once, while governing the city, he passed along one of the roads of Madinah 00:10:28.149 --> 00:10:32.149 carrying firewood on his back for his family. 00:10:32.149 --> 00:10:34.149 He passed by Tha'labah ibn Malik 00:10:34.149 --> 00:10:35.149 and said to him, 00:10:35.149 --> 00:10:38.149 "Make way for the governor, O Ibn Malik!" 00:10:38.149 --> 00:10:39.149 Tha'labah said to him, 00:10:39.149 --> 00:10:41.149 "May Allah have mercy on you! 00:10:41.149 --> 00:10:44.149 "Is all this space not enough for you?" 00:10:44.149 --> 00:10:45.149 So he said to him, 00:10:45.149 --> 00:10:49.149 "Clear the way for the governor and the bundle on his back!" 00:10:49.149 --> 00:10:54.250 Along with his vast knowledge and generous soul, Abu Hurairah combined 00:10:54.250 --> 00:10:56.279 God-fearing piety and scrupulousness. 00:10:56.279 --> 00:10:59.279 He used to fast during the day and pray during a third of the night, 00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:03.279 then awaken his wife to pray for the second third, 00:11:03.279 --> 00:11:08.279 and she would then awaken her daughter to pray for the final third. 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:12.279 Thus, worship in his house was continuous throughout the entire night. 00:11:12.279 --> 00:11:15.379 Abu Hurairah had a Black servant girl, 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:18.379 and she offended him and caused distress to his family, 00:11:18.379 --> 00:11:21.379 so he raised his whip to strike her with it. 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:23.379 Then he stopped and said, 00:11:23.379 --> 00:11:25.379 "Were it not for the retaliation on the Day of Resurrection, 00:11:25.379 --> 00:11:28.379 I would have made you feel pain just as you caused us pain. 00:11:28.379 --> 00:11:31.379 Instead, I will sell you to someone who will pay me your price full and well, 00:11:31.379 --> 00:11:33.379 at a time when I am in the utmost need of it— 00:11:33.379 --> 00:11:34.379 go! 00:11:34.379 --> 00:11:38.379 For you are free for the sake of Allah, Almighty and Glorious." 00:11:38.379 --> 00:11:40.409 His daughter used to say to him, 00:11:41.409 --> 00:11:44.409 "O my father, the girls mock me!" 00:11:44.409 --> 00:11:45.409 And she would say, 00:11:45.409 --> 00:11:48.440 "Why does your father not adorn you with gold?" 00:11:48.440 --> 00:11:50.440 He would reply, "O my daughter, 00:11:50.440 --> 00:11:51.440 say to them, 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:54.440 'My father fears for me the heat of the blazing Flame.'" 00:11:54.440 --> 00:11:58.440 Abu Hurairah’s refusal to adorn his daughter was not due to 00:11:58.440 --> 00:12:01.440 stinginess with wealth or greed for it, 00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:05.500 for he was magnanimous and open-handed in the cause of Allah. 00:12:05.500 --> 00:12:07.500 Marwan ibn al-Hakam once sent him 00:12:07.500 --> 00:12:09.500 one hundred gold dinars. 00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:12.500 The following day, he sent a message to him, saying: 00:12:12.500 --> 00:12:15.500 "My servant made a mistake and gave you the dinars, 00:12:15.500 --> 00:12:17.500 when I did not intend them for you; 00:12:17.500 --> 00:12:19.500 I intended them for someone else." 00:12:19.500 --> 00:12:22.500 Abu Hurairah was caught off guard and distressed, saying, 00:12:22.500 --> 00:12:24.500 "I have already spent them in the cause of Allah, 00:12:24.500 --> 00:12:27.500 and not a single dinar of them spent the night with me. 00:12:27.500 --> 00:12:30.500 So when my stipend comes out, take them from it." 00:12:30.500 --> 00:12:33.500 Yet Marwan had only done that to test him; 00:12:33.500 --> 00:12:36.500 when he investigated the matter, he found it to be true. 00:12:37.500 --> 00:12:39.600 Throughout his entire life, Abu Hurairah remained 00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:42.600 devoted and dutiful to his mother. 00:12:42.600 --> 00:12:45.600 Whenever he wanted to leave the house, 00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:48.600 he would stand at the door of her room and say, 00:12:48.600 --> 00:12:52.600 "Peace be upon you, mother, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." 00:12:52.600 --> 00:12:54.600 And she would reply, 00:12:54.600 --> 00:12:58.600 "And upon you be peace, my son, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." 00:12:58.600 --> 00:13:00.600 Then he would say, 00:13:00.600 --> 00:13:03.600 "May Allah have mercy on you, just as you raised me when I was small." 00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:05.600 And she would say, 00:13:05.600 --> 00:13:08.600 "May Allah have mercy on you, just as you were dutiful to me when I grew old." 00:13:08.600 --> 00:13:12.600 Then when he returned home, he would do the same. 00:13:12.600 --> 00:13:15.600 Abu Hurairah was extremely eager 00:13:15.600 --> 00:13:18.600 to call people to honor their parents 00:13:18.600 --> 00:13:20.600 and maintain their family ties. 00:13:20.600 --> 00:13:23.600 One day, he saw two men 00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:26.600 walking together, one older than the other. 00:13:26.600 --> 00:13:28.600 So he said to the younger of them, 00:13:28.600 --> 00:13:30.600 "What is this man to you?" 00:13:30.600 --> 00:13:32.600 He replied, "My father." 00:13:32.600 --> 00:13:33.600 Abu Hurairah said to him, 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:35.600 "Do not call him by his name, 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:37.600 do not walk ahead of him, 00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:39.600 and do not sit down before he does." 00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:42.600 When Abu Hurairah fell ill with the illness that led to his death, he wept. 00:13:42.600 --> 00:13:44.600 It was said to him, 00:13:44.600 --> 00:13:46.600 "What makes you weep, O Abu Hurairah?" 00:13:46.600 --> 00:13:48.700 He replied, 00:13:48.700 --> 00:13:51.700 "As for me, I am not weeping over this world of yours, 00:13:51.700 --> 00:13:55.700 but I am weeping because of the long journey and the scarcity of provisions. 00:13:55.700 --> 00:13:58.700 I stand at the end of a road 00:13:58.700 --> 00:14:01.700 leading me to Paradise or to Hell, 00:14:01.700 --> 00:14:04.730 and I do not know which of them I will be in." 00:14:04.730 --> 00:14:07.730 Marwan ibn al-Hakam visited him in his illness and said to him, 00:14:07.730 --> 00:14:10.730 "May Allah cure you, O Abu Hurairah!" 00:14:10.730 --> 00:14:11.730 Abu Hurairah said, 00:14:11.730 --> 00:14:14.730 "O Allah, I love meeting You, 00:14:14.730 --> 00:14:17.730 so love meeting me and hasten it for me!" 00:14:17.730 --> 00:14:20.759 Marwan had barely left his house 00:14:20.759 --> 00:14:23.950 when Abu Hurairah passed away. 00:14:23.950 --> 00:14:26.950 May Allah show vast mercy to Abu Hurairah!
