00:00:16.140 --> 00:00:21.609 I am one of the Mothers of the Believers. 00:00:21.609 --> 00:00:27.699 I am the cousin of the trustworthy Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:00:27.699 --> 00:00:31.699 My name was Barrah, and my kunyah was Umm Hakim. 00:00:31.699 --> 00:00:35.700 The Prophet, peace be upon him, changed my name. 00:00:35.700 --> 00:00:39.899 I was among the first of the female emigrants (Muhajirat). 00:00:39.899 --> 00:00:42.899 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, proposed to me. 00:00:42.899 --> 00:00:46.899 He proposed on behalf of his freedman, Zayd Ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:00:46.899 --> 00:00:48.899 I refused. 00:00:48.899 --> 00:00:50.899 Then Allah the Exalted revealed His words: 00:00:50.899 --> 00:00:55.090 “And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest.” (33:36) 00:00:55.090 --> 00:00:59.090 “And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest.” (33:36) 00:00:59.090 --> 00:01:03.090 “And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest.” (33:36) 00:01:03.090 --> 00:01:07.090 "And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger 00:01:07.090 --> 00:01:11.090 has certainly strayed into clear error." 00:01:11.090 --> 00:01:15.409 I had no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger. 00:01:15.409 --> 00:01:18.409 So I married Zayd. 00:01:18.409 --> 00:01:21.469 Later, Zayd divorced me. 00:01:21.469 --> 00:01:25.469 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, married me. 00:01:25.469 --> 00:01:27.469 By the command of Allah the Exalted. 00:01:27.469 --> 00:01:30.469 This was for a divine wisdom. 00:01:30.469 --> 00:01:36.500 It was intended to dismantle the pre-Islamic custom of adoption. 00:01:36.500 --> 00:01:40.500 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, entered into marriage with me. 00:01:40.500 --> 00:01:43.629 Without a guardian or witnesses. 00:01:43.629 --> 00:01:47.629 I used to take pride in this over the other Mothers of the Believers. 00:01:47.629 --> 00:01:49.629 I would say to them: 00:01:49.629 --> 00:01:51.629 "Your families gave you in marriage, 00:01:51.629 --> 00:01:57.620 but Allah married me off from above the seven heavens." 00:01:57.620 --> 00:02:00.620 The Prophet, peace be upon him, described me. 00:02:00.620 --> 00:02:02.620 As being 'awwah. 00:02:02.620 --> 00:02:05.659 Meaning, one who is humble and supplicates often. 00:02:05.659 --> 00:02:07.659 I loved giving charity. 00:02:07.659 --> 00:02:10.659 And showing kindness to the poor. 00:02:10.659 --> 00:02:12.659 I used to work with my own hands. 00:02:12.659 --> 00:02:14.659 And I would give charity from my own earnings. 00:02:14.659 --> 00:02:18.819 To the point that I became known as the Mother of the Poor. 00:02:18.819 --> 00:02:21.819 The Prophet, peace be upon him, once said. 00:02:21.819 --> 00:02:23.819 One day to his wives: 00:02:23.819 --> 00:02:26.819 "The first of you to join me 00:02:26.819 --> 00:02:28.819 is the one with the longest hand." 00:02:28.819 --> 00:02:32.879 After he passed away, we used to stretch our hands against the wall. 00:02:32.879 --> 00:02:35.879 To see whose hand was the longest. 00:02:35.879 --> 00:02:37.879 My hand was actually short. 00:02:37.879 --> 00:02:44.879 Yet, I was the first of his wives to join the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:47.879 Then the people realized that what was meant 00:02:47.879 --> 00:02:52.879 was the one with the longest hand in terms of charity, generosity, and good deeds. 00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:56.939 My love for charity reached such a point 00:02:56.939 --> 00:02:59.939 that I said when death approached me: 00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:02.939 "I have already prepared my shroud. 00:03:02.939 --> 00:03:06.939 If 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, sends me a shroud, 00:03:06.939 --> 00:03:09.939 then give one of them away in charity. 00:03:09.939 --> 00:03:13.939 And if you are able, when you lower me into my grave, 00:03:13.939 --> 00:03:16.939 to give the ties of my shroud in charity, 00:03:16.939 --> 00:03:18.939 then do so." 00:03:18.939 --> 00:03:21.129 So, who am I?
