A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I am from the Quraysh.
I was one of their heroes.
And one of their most formidable men.
I was physically strong.
And known for my strength and intensity.
No one could ever throw me in a wrestling match.
And no one ever defeated me.
No one ever managed to pin my back to the ground.
My conversion to Islam was delayed.
I embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah.
I met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
One day, while he was alone.
In one of the mountain passes of Makkah.
This was before the Hijrah.
He said to me:
"Will you not fear Allah and accept what I invite you to?"
I said:
"If I knew that what you say is the truth,
I would follow you."
He said:
"What if I were to throw you down?
Would you know that what I say is the truth?"
I said, "Yes."
He said:
"Then stand up so I may wrestle you."
I stood up to face him.
I wrestled him, and he threw me down.
He pinned me to the ground,
until I was completely helpless.
Then I said:
"Do it again, O Muhammad."
He did it again,
and threw me a second time.
I began looking around to see if anyone was watching me.
He said:
"What is the matter with you?"
I said:
"I am afraid some shepherds might see me and grow bold against me,
even though I am among the strongest of my people."
He said:
"Would you like a third wrestling match?"
I said, "Yes."
I wrestled him, and he threw me down.
I sat there, dejected and sad.
He said:
"What is the matter with you?"
I said:
"I used to think I was the strongest of the Quraysh."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"If you fear Allah and follow my command,
I will show you something even more amazing than that."
I asked, "What is it?"
He said:
"I will call this tree that you see,
and it will come to me."
I said:
"Then call it."
He called it,
and it came until it stood before him.
I said:
"Tell it to return to its place."
He said to it:
"Return to your place."
And it returned to its place.
I went to my people
and said:
"O sons of 'Abd Manaf,
your companion has bewitched the people of the earth!
By Allah, I have never seen a greater sorcerer than him."
I had divorced my wife, Suhaymah al-Muzaniyyah, three times,
and I regretted it.
I came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
and said:
"O Messenger of Allah,
I have divorced my wife irrevocably."
He said:
"What did you intend by that?"
I said:
"One [divorce]."
He said:
"By Allah?"
I said:
"By Allah."
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
"Then it is as you intended."
So I took her back.
And I heard the Prophet, peace be upon him, say:
"Every religion has a character,
and the character of this religion is modesty."
