A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions.
I was the muezzin of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I am from the Banu Jumah tribe.
My brother, Unays, was killed on the day of Badr while he was a disbeliever.
At that time, I was still a young boy.
I embraced Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah.
I was sixteen years old.
I was among those with the most resonant and pleasant voices.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, commanded me.
To perform the call to prayer (adhan) in Makkah.
I was the first muezzin of the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram).
I remained so until my death.
The adhan remained with my children and my children’s children.
For many years.
I went out with a group from the Quraysh after the conquest of Makkah.
When we were on the road,
We caught sight of the Muslim army.
They were returning from Hunayn.
We heard the voice of the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
Calling to prayer.
We stood there mocking them.
I began to call out in a loud voice, ridiculing their muezzin.
The Muslims heard my voice.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, ordered,
That we be brought to him.
We were brought and stood before him.
He asked, "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard raised in the adhan?"
The group all pointed to me.
And they spoke the truth.
He let them all go but kept me detained.
I feared for my life.
He said to me, "Stand and call the adhan for prayer."
I stood before him.
There was nothing more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
Nor anything he commanded me to do.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, dictated the adhan to me himself.
He taught it to me phrase by phrase.
Then, when I finished the adhan, he called me.
He gave me a pouch containing some silver.
Then he placed his hand on my forehead.
Then he passed it over my face.
Then over my chest.
Until the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reached my navel.
Then he said,
"May Allah bless you and shower His blessings upon you."
Every bit of hatred I had for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, left my heart.
And it was all replaced by love for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
Command me to perform the adhan in Makkah."
He replied, "I have already done so."
So I went to 'Attab Ibn Asid, may Allah be pleased with him,
Who was the governor of Makkah.
I informed him of my affair with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
He responded accordingly.
From that moment on, I became the muezzin of the Sacred Mosque.
Until I passed away.
I did not migrate to Madinah,
Because of my commitment to the adhan in the Sacred House of Allah.
I never shaved the hair on my forehead,
Because the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had wiped his hand over it.
The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Makkah.
When the time for prayer arrived,
I stood and performed the adhan.
When 'Umar heard my adhan,
He summoned me and said,
"How resonant your voice is!
Do you not fear that your veins might burst from the intensity of your voice?"
I said, "O Commander of the Faithful,
You have come to us,
And I wanted you to hear my voice."
