Pause and identify this Companion, scholar, and prominent figure. Solve this riddle: who am I? I am one of the Muhajirun (Emigrants) among the Companions and one of the early participants in the Battle of Badr. I am the maternal uncle of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar and his sister, Hafsah, the Mother of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with them both. I migrated to Abyssinia, then returned from there to Makkah. Then, I migrated to Madinah after the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had migrated there. I witnessed the battles of Badr, Uhud, and all other military campaigns alongside him. My brother, ‘Uthman ibn Maz‘un, may Allah be pleased with him, passed away. He had entrusted me with the care of his family. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, came to me. He asked for the hand of his cousin, the daughter of ‘Uthman, and I married her to him. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah, may Allah be pleased with him, also came forward to ask for her hand from her mother, enticing her with wealth. Her mother agreed, and the young woman’s opinion aligned with her mother’s. This reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He asked me about her, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is my brother’s daughter, and I am the executor of her father’s will." "I have not been negligent regarding her, and I have married her to someone whose virtue and kinship I know." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Let her follow her own desire, for she has more right to herself." So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, withdrew her from Ibn ‘Umar and married her to Al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah. I was appointed governor of Bahrain during the caliphate of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. Then, I was accused of drinking wine, so ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me. He asked me about it; I did not deny it and told him that I had interpreted this verse: ﴾There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed [in the past] if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds, then fear Allah and believe, then fear Allah and do good; and Allah loves the doers of good.﴿ ‘Umar corrected my interpretation, saying: "If you truly fear Allah, you will avoid what He has forbidden you." Then ‘Umar turned to the people and said: "What is your opinion on carrying out the legal punishment (hadd) upon him?" They said: "We do not think you should flog him while he is ill," so he remained silent about it for some days. Then, one morning, he resolved to have me flogged and said to his companions: "What is your opinion on flogging him?" They said: "We do not think you should flog him while he is ill," but ‘Umar replied: "That he should meet Allah under the lashes is dearer to me than that I should meet Him while he (the responsibility for his punishment) is still upon my neck." "Bring me a full whip," and ‘Umar ordered that I be flogged, so I became angry with ‘Umar and shunned him. Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, went out for Hajj, and I also went out with the people for Hajj. When we returned from our Hajj, ‘Umar stopped at a place on the road and slept. When he awoke from his sleep, he summoned me and said: "By Allah, someone came to me in my dream and said: 'Make peace with him, for he is your brother.'" When they came for me, I refused to go to him, so ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, ordered them to bring me to him even if they had to drag me. When I came to him, he spoke to me, sought forgiveness for me, and made peace with me. So, who am I?
