Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of 'Imran above (all His) creatures.” (3:33) 00:01:05.219 --> 00:01:11.700 Descendants, one of another. 00:01:11.700 --> 00:01:15.700 And Allah is Hearing and Knowing." 00:01:15.700 --> 00:01:18.109 Ibn Kathir said: 00:01:18.109 --> 00:01:23.109 "The Almighty informs that He chose these households over all the people of the earth. 00:01:23.109 --> 00:01:26.180 He chose Adam, peace be upon him: 00:01:26.180 --> 00:01:30.180 He created him with His own Hand, breathed into him of His spirit, 00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:32.180 Made the angels prostrate to him, 00:01:32.180 --> 00:01:35.180 Taught him the names of all things, 00:01:35.180 --> 00:01:37.180 Settled him in Paradise, 00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:39.180 And then brought him down from it 00:01:39.180 --> 00:01:42.180 For the divine wisdom He willed therein. 00:01:42.180 --> 00:01:45.400 He also chose Noah, peace be upon him, 00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:48.400 Making him the first messenger sent to the people of the earth 00:01:48.400 --> 00:01:51.400 When mankind worshipped idols 00:01:51.400 --> 00:01:56.400 And associated partners in Allah's religion without any authority revealed by Him. 00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:01.400 And He took vengeance for him after his long stay among his people, 00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:04.400 Calling them to Allah night and day, 00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:06.400 In secret and openly, 00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:09.400 But it only increased them in aversion. 00:02:09.400 --> 00:02:11.400 So he prayed against them, 00:02:11.400 --> 00:02:14.400 And Allah drowned them to the very last one, 00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:20.400 None surviving except those who followed his religion with which Allah had sent him. 00:02:20.400 --> 00:02:22.689 And He chose the family of Abraham, 00:02:22.689 --> 00:02:27.689 Among whom was the master of mankind and the absolute seal of the prophets, 00:02:27.689 --> 00:02:30.689 Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:02:30.689 --> 00:02:33.719 And He chose the family of 'Imran; 00:02:33.719 --> 00:02:35.719 And what is meant by this 'Imran 00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:38.719 Is the father of Mary, daughter of 'Imran, 00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:42.719 The mother of Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon them." 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:44.819 End of his words. 00:02:44.819 --> 00:02:50.479 During the time of the prophet of Allah, Zechariah, peace be upon him, 00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:55.479 There was a man among his followers named 'Imran ibn Mathan. 00:02:55.479 --> 00:02:57.479 This 'Imran was 00:02:57.479 --> 00:03:01.479 The leader of prayer for the Children of Israel in his time. 00:03:01.479 --> 00:03:04.479 He was renowned for righteousness, devotion, and virtue, 00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:08.479 So much so that his status grew immensely among the Children of Israel. 00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:14.610 It so happened that Zechariah and 'Imran married two sisters: 00:03:14.610 --> 00:03:17.610 Elizabeth, daughter of Faqudh, 00:03:17.610 --> 00:03:18.610 The mother of John, 00:03:18.610 --> 00:03:21.610 Was married to Zechariah, peace be upon him; 00:03:21.610 --> 00:03:24.610 While Hannah, daughter of Faqudh, 00:03:24.610 --> 00:03:25.610 The mother of Mary, 00:03:25.610 --> 00:03:28.610 Was married to 'Imran, peace be upon him. 00:03:28.610 --> 00:03:32.830 Hannah was a righteous, good-natured wife, 00:03:32.830 --> 00:03:36.830 Pure, virtuous, God-fearing, and faithful, 00:03:36.830 --> 00:03:40.830 Obedient to her husband and obedient to her Lord. 00:03:40.830 --> 00:03:45.960 Allah had withheld children from her until she grew old. 00:03:45.960 --> 00:03:50.020 They were a household of high standing with Allah. 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:52.020 While she was once in the shade of a tree, 00:03:52.020 --> 00:03:56.020 She caught sight of a bird feeding its chick, 00:03:56.020 --> 00:03:59.020 And her heart was deeply stirred with the yearning for a child. 00:03:59.020 --> 00:04:03.020 So she supplicated Allah to grant her an offspring, 00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:04.020 Saying: 00:04:04.020 --> 00:04:08.020 "O Allah, I vow to You, if You grant me a child, 00:04:08.020 --> 00:04:12.020 That I will dedicate it entirely to the service of the Holy House, 00:04:12.020 --> 00:04:15.219 To be among its custodians and servants." 00:04:15.219 --> 00:04:18.220 Allah answered her prayer, 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:22.220 And when she became pregnant, she rejoiced with the greatest joy, 00:04:22.220 --> 00:04:23.220 Saying: 00:04:23.220 --> 00:04:27.220 “(Remember) when the wife of 'Imran said: My Lord! I have vowed unto Thee that which is in my belly as a consecrated (offering). Accept it from me. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Hearer, the Knower!” (3:35) 00:04:27.220 --> 00:04:30.220 "Dedicated purely to the service of Your Holy House, 00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:32.220 Devoted exclusively to Your worship, 00:04:32.220 --> 00:04:35.250 Free from all worldly distractions for Your obedience; 00:04:35.250 --> 00:04:39.250 So accept this sincere vow from me." 00:04:39.250 --> 00:04:43.250 This vow was legally binding in their sacred law, 00:04:43.250 --> 00:04:45.250 For a dedicated child among them 00:04:45.250 --> 00:04:48.250 Would remain in the sanctuary serving it, 00:04:48.250 --> 00:04:52.250 Constantly residing therein until reaching the age of puberty, 00:04:52.250 --> 00:04:54.250 Whereupon he was given the choice: 00:04:54.250 --> 00:04:57.250 If he wished, he could depart wherever he pleased, 00:04:57.250 --> 00:05:01.250 And if he wished, he could stay in the sanctuary serving it. 00:05:01.250 --> 00:05:04.339 However, only boys were dedicated in this manner, 00:05:04.339 --> 00:05:08.339 As a girl was not considered suitable to serve the Holy House 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:11.339 Due to menstruation and physical impurities that affect her. 00:05:11.339 --> 00:05:16.230 Hannah, the wife of 'Imran, 00:05:16.230 --> 00:05:19.230 Was hoping that what was in her womb would be a male 00:05:19.230 --> 00:05:21.230 So that she could fulfill her vow. 00:05:21.230 --> 00:05:23.230 But when she delivered her child, 00:05:24.230 --> 00:05:27.300 Behold, it was a female! 00:05:27.300 --> 00:05:29.300 She was utterly distraught and at a loss, 00:05:29.300 --> 00:05:31.300 And she said brokenheartedly: 00:05:31.300 --> 00:05:34.300 “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.” (3:36) 00:05:34.300 --> 00:05:37.300 Though her Lord knew best what she had delivered, 00:05:37.300 --> 00:05:40.300 For He is the Decreer and the All-Powerful. 00:05:40.300 --> 00:05:44.300 Then she said by way of sorrow, grief, and excuse: 00:05:44.300 --> 00:05:47.300 "And the male is not like the female," 00:05:47.300 --> 00:05:51.300 Meaning in serving the sanctuary and the worshippers therein, 00:05:51.300 --> 00:05:54.300 Due to her bodily vulnerability and weakness, 00:05:54.300 --> 00:05:57.300 And what befalls her of menstruation and postnatal bleeding. 00:05:57.300 --> 00:06:00.300 "And I, my Lord, have named her Mary." 00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:03.300 Mary in their language 00:06:03.300 --> 00:06:06.329 Means the devoted worshipper and servant. 00:06:06.329 --> 00:06:09.329 "And I seek refuge and protection in You for her and her offspring 00:06:09.329 --> 00:06:12.329 From the outcast Satan." 00:06:12.329 --> 00:06:17.800 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: 00:06:17.800 --> 00:06:21.800 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:23.800 "There is no newborn child 00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:26.800 But that Satan touches him at the moment he is born, 00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:30.800 Whereupon he begins crying out loud from that touch, 00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:33.990 Except for Mary and her son." 00:06:33.990 --> 00:06:35.990 Then Abu Hurayrah said: 00:06:35.990 --> 00:06:37.990 "Recite if you wish: 00:06:37.990 --> 00:06:40.990 'And I seek refuge in You for her and her offspring 00:06:40.990 --> 00:06:45.779 From the outcast Satan.'" 00:06:45.779 --> 00:06:48.779 Allah accepted the vow of the righteous woman, 00:06:48.779 --> 00:06:51.779 Hannah, with gracious acceptance, 00:06:51.779 --> 00:06:54.779 Caused the newborn Mary to grow in a goodly manner, 00:06:54.779 --> 00:06:58.779 Endeared her to the hearts of His righteous servants, 00:06:58.779 --> 00:07:02.779 And entrusted her guardianship to Zechariah, peace be upon him. 00:07:02.779 --> 00:07:05.779 That was because her father, 'Imran, 00:07:05.779 --> 00:07:08.779 Had passed away while she was still in her mother's womb. 00:07:08.779 --> 00:07:12.779 Her mother brought her to the Holy House, 00:07:12.779 --> 00:07:16.779 Placed her before the rabbis and priests, and said to them: 00:07:16.779 --> 00:07:19.850 "Here is this consecrated child for you." 00:07:19.850 --> 00:07:23.850 They said: "This is the daughter of our leader 'Imran," 00:07:23.850 --> 00:07:27.850 For in his lifetime he used to lead them in prayer. 00:07:27.850 --> 00:07:31.850 So they vied with one another, each wanting to take custody of her, 00:07:31.850 --> 00:07:33.850 Out of honor for her father. 00:07:33.850 --> 00:07:36.879 Zechariah, peace be upon him, said to them: 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:38.879 "Entrust her to me, 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:40.879 For I have more right to her than you; 00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:43.879 Besides, her maternal aunt is under my care." 00:07:43.879 --> 00:07:47.980 They said: "No, not until we cast lots for her." 00:07:47.980 --> 00:07:49.980 So they set out toward a river 00:07:49.980 --> 00:07:54.980 And cast into it their pens with which they used to write the Torah. 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:57.980 Zechariah's pen floated upon the water, 00:07:57.980 --> 00:08:00.980 While their pens sank to the bottom. 00:08:00.980 --> 00:08:04.980 Thus Zechariah, peace be upon him, assumed her guardianship. 00:08:04.980 --> 00:08:08.009 He placed her with her maternal aunt, the mother of John, 00:08:08.009 --> 00:08:12.009 Until she grew up and attained womanhood. 00:08:12.009 --> 00:08:14.009 He built a prayer chamber for her, 00:08:14.009 --> 00:08:17.009 That is, a private room in the sanctuary, 00:08:17.009 --> 00:08:20.009 Which could only be reached by a ladder. 00:08:20.009 --> 00:08:25.009 He would bring her her food, drink, and oil every day. 00:08:25.009 --> 00:08:29.100 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Allah giveth without stint to whom He will.” (3:37) 00:08:29.100 --> 00:08:31.100 Whenever he entered upon her, he found sustenance with her; 00:08:31.100 --> 00:08:34.100 Namely, out-of-season fruit: 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:37.100 He would find summer fruit in winter, 00:08:37.100 --> 00:08:40.100 And winter fruit in summer. 00:08:40.100 --> 00:08:42.100 He would ask her, saying: 00:08:42.100 --> 00:08:46.100 "O Mary, from where do you have this food?" 00:08:46.100 --> 00:08:48.100 She would reply: 00:08:48.100 --> 00:08:50.100 "It is from Allah; 00:08:50.100 --> 00:08:55.460 “And her Lord accepted her with full acceptance and vouchsafed to her a goodly growth; and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary! Whence cometh unto thee this (food)? She answered: It is from Allah. Lo! Allah hath chosen thee and made thee pure, and hath preferred thee above (all) the women of creation.” (3:42) 00:10:54.490 --> 00:10:57.490 Meaning: He selected you and chose you for His obedience, 00:10:57.490 --> 00:10:59.490 Accepted you for the service of His House, 00:10:59.490 --> 00:11:03.490 Purified you from impurities and filth, 00:11:03.490 --> 00:11:08.490 And from everything that contradicts praiseworthy character and sound human nature, 00:11:08.490 --> 00:11:12.490 And chose you above the women of the worlds in your era. 00:11:12.490 --> 00:11:16.620 O Mary, be devoutly obedient to Allah alone, 00:11:16.620 --> 00:11:18.620 Persist in it, 00:11:18.620 --> 00:11:21.620 Increase your prostrations before Allah, 00:11:21.620 --> 00:11:24.620 And bow down with those who bow. 00:11:24.620 --> 00:11:30.620 For constancy in acts of obedience and prayers preserves blessings 00:11:30.620 --> 00:11:35.620 And draws a person nearer and dearer to his Creator, Mighty and Majestic is He. 00:11:35.620 --> 00:11:39.870 So Mary acted upon Allah's counsel to her: 00:11:39.870 --> 00:11:42.870 She would perform full ritual washing every night 00:11:42.870 --> 00:11:48.700 And stand in prayer until her feet became swollen. 00:11:48.700 --> 00:11:52.700 Out of Mary's intense devotion, peace be upon her, 00:11:52.700 --> 00:11:55.700 She secluded herself from her family, withdrawing from them, 00:11:55.700 --> 00:11:59.700 And went alone to the eastern side of the Holy Mosque 00:11:59.700 --> 00:12:02.700 To worship Allah the Exalted. 00:12:02.700 --> 00:12:06.700 To further her seclusion and separation from people, 00:12:06.700 --> 00:12:11.980 She placed a screen between herself and them. 00:12:11.980 --> 00:12:14.980 One day, while she was in that state, 00:12:14.980 --> 00:12:18.980 Allah sent Gabriel, peace be upon him, to her. 00:12:18.980 --> 00:12:22.980 He appeared before her in the form of a handsome man, 00:12:22.980 --> 00:12:25.980 Perfectly proportioned and of flawless physique, 00:12:25.980 --> 00:12:28.980 In the finest form a human could possess. 00:12:28.980 --> 00:12:33.980 When she saw him entering upon her presence without permission, 00:12:33.980 --> 00:12:37.980 She feared him and thought that he intended some harm toward her. 00:12:37.980 --> 00:12:43.980 “She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art Allah-fearing.” (19:18) 00:12:43.980 --> 00:12:50.110 By uttering this statement, she combined seeking refuge in her Lord 00:12:50.110 --> 00:12:53.110 With instilling fear in him of Allah's punishment, 00:12:53.110 --> 00:12:57.110 Should his soul entice him to intend evil toward her. 00:12:57.110 --> 00:13:04.269 Furthermore, her statement indicates that she had attained the highest degrees of chastity and purity, 00:13:04.269 --> 00:13:06.269 as well as distance from any suspicion. 00:13:06.269 --> 00:13:09.269 For she said this to him 00:13:09.269 --> 00:13:13.269 while seeing him as a well-proportioned, handsome human being, 00:13:13.269 --> 00:13:17.269 in a secluded place, completely isolated from other people. 00:13:17.269 --> 00:13:21.750 So when Jibril saw her terror and apprehension, 00:13:21.750 --> 00:13:26.750 he said to her, "I am only a messenger from your Lord to you; 00:13:26.750 --> 00:13:29.750 so do not fear, nor be alarmed. 00:13:29.750 --> 00:13:36.750 He has sent me to you to bestow upon you, by His leave and power, a pure boy, 00:13:36.750 --> 00:13:39.750 cleansed of sins and transgressions, 00:13:39.750 --> 00:13:42.750 full of goodness and blessings, 00:13:42.750 --> 00:13:45.200 whose name is 'Isa." 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:48.200 Maryam (peace be upon her) was astonished at this, 00:13:48.200 --> 00:13:51.200 and she said, "How can I have a boy 00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:53.200 when I do not have a husband, 00:13:53.200 --> 00:13:56.200 nor could unchastity ever be conceived of me?" 00:13:56.200 --> 00:13:59.299 Thereupon, Jibril (peace be upon him) said to her, 00:13:59.299 --> 00:14:01.299 answering her question: 00:14:01.299 --> 00:14:04.299 "Allah will bring forth a boy from you, 00:14:04.299 --> 00:14:06.299 even if you have no husband 00:14:06.299 --> 00:14:09.299 and no indecency is committed by you, 00:14:09.299 --> 00:14:12.299 for He is capable of all that He wills; 00:14:12.299 --> 00:14:17.299 and so that He may make him a sign to mankind of His exalted power, 00:14:17.299 --> 00:14:19.299 and a mercy from Him to them, 00:14:19.299 --> 00:14:23.299 by having this boy become one of the prophets, 00:14:23.299 --> 00:14:27.299 calling to the worship and monotheism of Allah Almighty. 00:14:27.299 --> 00:14:30.419 And know, O Maryam, 00:14:30.419 --> 00:14:33.419 that Allah has already decreed this matter, 00:14:33.419 --> 00:14:35.419 so it is inevitable." 00:14:35.419 --> 00:14:39.860 Maryam surrendered to the decree of Allah. 00:14:39.860 --> 00:14:45.899 At that point, Jibril (peace be upon him) breathed into the opening of her garment— 00:14:45.899 --> 00:14:48.899 which is the neck opening of the dress— 00:14:48.899 --> 00:14:52.899 and Maryam conceived the child by the leave of Allah Almighty. 00:14:53.899 --> 00:14:57.149 When she felt the pregnancy, 00:14:57.149 --> 00:14:59.149 her chest grew tight with anguish, 00:14:59.149 --> 00:15:02.149 and she did not know what to say to people, 00:15:02.149 --> 00:15:07.149 knowing that they would never believe what she told them. 00:15:07.149 --> 00:15:11.409 When her pregnancy was full-term and delivery drew near, 00:15:11.409 --> 00:15:13.409 she feared her people, 00:15:13.409 --> 00:15:15.409 so she withdrew from them 00:15:15.409 --> 00:15:20.409 and went far away until she reached the farthest part of the valley in Bethlehem, 00:15:20.409 --> 00:15:24.409 eight miles away from Jerusalem. 00:15:24.409 --> 00:15:28.600 Then the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. 00:15:28.600 --> 00:15:31.600 When she suffered the agony of labor, 00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:35.600 the misery of isolation without food or drink, 00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:38.600 the heartache over what people would say, 00:15:38.600 --> 00:15:41.600 and feared she might lack patience, 00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:45.600 she wished she had died before this event 00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:48.600 and had been a thing forgotten, completely lost to memory, 00:15:48.600 --> 00:15:50.919 never to be remembered. 00:15:50.919 --> 00:15:53.919 These were truly agonizing moments, 00:15:53.919 --> 00:15:57.919 such as any woman experiences during natural childbirth; 00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:01.110 so how must it have been for Maryam (peace be upon her), 00:16:01.110 --> 00:16:05.110 being in such a distressing state of mind, 00:16:05.110 --> 00:16:08.110 and completely alone besides, 00:16:08.110 --> 00:16:12.110 delivering her very first child without any helper? 00:16:12.110 --> 00:16:17.620 Jibril (peace be upon him) was below her, 00:16:17.620 --> 00:16:20.620 in a place lower than where she sat, 00:16:20.620 --> 00:16:22.620 and he calmed her fears, 00:16:22.620 --> 00:16:24.620 reassured her heart, 00:16:24.620 --> 00:16:26.620 and said to her, 00:16:26.620 --> 00:16:29.620 "Do not grieve, O Maryam." 00:16:29.620 --> 00:16:31.620 Then he struck the ground with his foot, 00:16:31.620 --> 00:16:34.620 and a small stream flowed beneath her. 00:16:34.620 --> 00:16:36.620 And he said to her, 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:40.620 “Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,” (19:24) 00:16:40.620 --> 00:16:43.679 "A sweet stream for you to drink from; 00:16:43.679 --> 00:16:46.679 and shake toward yourself the trunk of the date-palm; 00:16:46.679 --> 00:16:49.679 it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates, 00:16:49.679 --> 00:16:53.899 fit to eat, moist and delicious." 00:16:53.899 --> 00:16:54.899 It has been said: 00:16:54.899 --> 00:16:58.899 "There is nothing better for a postpartum woman than fresh dates, 00:16:58.899 --> 00:17:03.120 nor for a sick person than honey." 00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:06.119 So eat, O Maryam, of those fresh dates, 00:17:06.119 --> 00:17:09.119 drink from that stream, 00:17:09.119 --> 00:17:12.119 be comforted and be of good cheer, 00:17:12.119 --> 00:17:15.119 and banish all sorrows from yourself. 00:17:15.250 --> 00:17:17.250 And if you see any human being 00:17:17.250 --> 00:17:19.250 who asks you about your child, 00:17:19.250 --> 00:17:23.250 “So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.” (19:26) 00:17:23.250 --> 00:17:25.250 meaning: a fast of silence— 00:17:25.250 --> 00:17:28.250 "so I will not speak to any person today." 00:17:28.250 --> 00:17:30.380 Among the Children of Israel, 00:17:30.380 --> 00:17:32.380 whoever wished to exert himself in devotion 00:17:32.380 --> 00:17:34.380 would fast from speech 00:17:34.380 --> 00:17:36.380 just as he fasted from food, 00:17:36.380 --> 00:17:40.380 not speaking until evening came. 00:17:40.380 --> 00:17:42.599 Allah Almighty said: 00:17:42.599 --> 00:17:45.789 “And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East,” (19:16) 00:17:45.789 --> 00:17:48.789 “And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East,” (19:16) 00:17:48.789 --> 00:17:51.789 "to an eastern place. 00:17:51.789 --> 00:17:55.789 And she took in seclusion from them 00:17:55.789 --> 00:17:57.789 a screen. 00:17:57.789 --> 00:18:00.789 Then We sent to her 00:18:00.789 --> 00:18:04.789 Our angel, 00:18:04.789 --> 00:18:09.789 “And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man.” (19:17) 00:18:09.789 --> 00:18:13.789 She said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge 00:18:13.789 --> 00:18:16.789 in the Most Merciful from you, 00:18:16.789 --> 00:18:19.789 if you should be fearing of Allah.' 00:18:19.789 --> 00:18:22.789 He said, 'I am only 00:18:22.789 --> 00:18:24.789 the messenger of your Lord 00:18:24.789 --> 00:18:26.789 to give you 00:18:26.789 --> 00:18:29.789 a pure boy.' 00:18:29.789 --> 00:18:32.980 She said, 'How 00:18:32.980 --> 00:18:35.980 can I have a boy 00:18:35.980 --> 00:18:38.980 when no man has touched me 00:18:38.980 --> 00:18:41.980 when no man has touched me 00:18:41.980 --> 00:18:44.980 and I have not been unchaste?' 00:18:44.980 --> 00:18:46.980 He said, 'Thus 00:18:46.980 --> 00:18:50.980 your Lord says, "It is easy for Me," 00:18:50.980 --> 00:18:54.980 and We will make him a sign to the people 00:18:54.980 --> 00:18:59.369 and a mercy from Us. 00:18:59.369 --> 00:19:03.369 And it was a matter decreed.' 00:19:03.369 --> 00:19:06.369 So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him 00:19:06.369 --> 00:19:10.369 to a remote place. 00:19:10.369 --> 00:19:14.369 And the pains of childbirth drove her 00:19:14.369 --> 00:19:17.369 to the trunk of a date-palm. 00:19:17.369 --> 00:19:19.369 She said, 'Oh, I wish 00:19:19.369 --> 00:19:25.369 I had died before this 00:19:25.369 --> 00:19:30.369 and was in oblivion, forgotten.' 00:19:30.369 --> 00:19:33.369 But he called her from below her, 00:19:33.369 --> 00:19:35.369 'Do not grieve; 00:19:35.369 --> 00:19:39.369 “Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,” (19:24) 00:19:39.369 --> 00:19:41.369 And shake toward you 00:19:41.369 --> 00:19:43.369 the trunk of the date-palm; 00:19:43.369 --> 00:19:45.369 it will drop upon you 00:19:45.369 --> 00:19:48.369 ripe, fresh dates. 00:19:48.369 --> 00:19:50.369 So eat and drink 00:19:50.369 --> 00:19:52.369 and be contented. 00:19:52.369 --> 00:19:55.369 And if you see 00:19:55.369 --> 00:19:59.369 from among humanity anyone, 00:19:59.369 --> 00:20:01.369 say, 00:20:01.369 --> 00:20:04.369 say, "Indeed, I have vowed 00:20:04.369 --> 00:20:07.369 to the Most Merciful a fast, 00:20:07.369 --> 00:20:11.369 “So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal.” (19:26) 00:20:11.369 --> 00:20:15.420 Maryam (peace be upon her) carried 00:20:15.420 --> 00:20:17.420 her newborn in her arms 00:20:17.420 --> 00:20:19.420 and brought him to her people, 00:20:19.420 --> 00:20:21.420 doing so because she was fully confident 00:20:21.420 --> 00:20:24.420 of her own innocence and purity; 00:20:24.420 --> 00:20:28.519 thus she came unhesitating and unconcerned. 00:20:28.519 --> 00:20:31.519 But when they saw her, they said to her, 00:20:31.519 --> 00:20:33.519 "O Maryam, 00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:35.519 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27) 00:20:35.519 --> 00:20:37.519 meaning: a monstrous, atrocious thing, 00:20:37.519 --> 00:20:39.519 and by that they meant fornication— 00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:42.519 far be it from her! 00:20:42.519 --> 00:20:44.650 And they said to her reproachfully, 00:20:44.650 --> 00:20:46.650 "O sister of Harun!" 00:20:46.650 --> 00:20:48.650 She had a half-brother through her father 00:20:48.650 --> 00:20:50.650 named Harun, 00:20:50.650 --> 00:20:52.650 for they used to name themselves 00:20:52.650 --> 00:20:54.650 after the names of the prophets; 00:20:54.650 --> 00:20:56.650 and her brother Harun was 00:20:56.650 --> 00:20:58.650 the most exemplary man among the Children of Israel 00:20:58.650 --> 00:21:00.650 in piety and worship. 00:21:00.650 --> 00:21:02.650 They said to her, 00:21:02.650 --> 00:21:04.650 "O sister of Harun, 00:21:04.650 --> 00:21:06.650 your father was not an unchaste man, 00:21:06.650 --> 00:21:09.650 nor was your mother an unchaste woman; 00:21:09.650 --> 00:21:11.650 you come from a pure household, 00:21:11.650 --> 00:21:13.650 known for righteousness, 00:21:13.650 --> 00:21:15.650 so how could you bring us a child 00:21:15.650 --> 00:21:18.029 without a father?" 00:21:18.029 --> 00:21:20.029 Thereupon, Maryam (peace be upon her) pointed 00:21:20.029 --> 00:21:22.029 to her son 'Isa, 00:21:22.029 --> 00:21:25.029 her demeanor saying to them, 00:21:25.029 --> 00:21:27.029 "Direct your speech to him, 00:21:27.029 --> 00:21:29.029 for he will inform you 00:21:29.029 --> 00:21:31.029 of the reality of the matter." 00:21:31.029 --> 00:21:33.220 But they were not convinced 00:21:33.220 --> 00:21:35.220 by her gesture; 00:21:35.220 --> 00:21:37.220 rather, they said to her, 00:21:37.220 --> 00:21:39.220 "How can we speak to a little child 00:21:39.220 --> 00:21:41.220 who is still in his cradle 00:21:41.220 --> 00:21:43.220 and in his nursing infancy?" 00:21:43.220 --> 00:21:45.220 And they deemed this act of hers 00:21:45.220 --> 00:21:47.220 even more offensive to them 00:21:47.220 --> 00:21:49.220 than the charge they had brought against her 00:21:49.220 --> 00:21:52.440 of unchastity. 00:21:52.440 --> 00:21:54.440 At that moment, Allah caused 'Isa to speak 00:21:54.440 --> 00:21:56.440 (peace be upon him) while he was an infant 00:21:56.440 --> 00:21:58.440 in the cradle, 00:21:58.440 --> 00:22:00.440 and he said to them, 00:22:00.440 --> 00:22:02.470 "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah." 00:22:02.470 --> 00:22:04.470 This was the very first word 00:22:04.470 --> 00:22:06.470 that 'Isa spoke 00:22:06.470 --> 00:22:08.470 (peace be upon him). 00:22:08.470 --> 00:22:10.470 Then he said, 00:22:10.470 --> 00:22:12.470 "He has given me the Scripture"— 00:22:12.470 --> 00:22:14.470 meaning He has decreed that He will grant me 00:22:14.470 --> 00:22:16.470 the Gospel— 00:22:16.470 --> 00:22:18.470 "and He has made me one of 00:22:18.470 --> 00:22:20.470 His noble prophets, 00:22:20.470 --> 00:22:22.470 calling people to the worship of Him 00:22:22.470 --> 00:22:24.470 alone. 00:22:24.470 --> 00:22:26.470 And He has also made me, 00:22:26.470 --> 00:22:28.470 alongside my prophethood, 00:22:28.470 --> 00:22:30.470 blessed, full of 00:22:30.470 --> 00:22:32.470 goodness and blessing 00:22:32.470 --> 00:22:34.470 and purity as long as I remain alive. 00:22:34.470 --> 00:22:36.470 And He has made me likewise 00:22:36.470 --> 00:22:38.470 dutiful to my mother, 00:22:38.470 --> 00:22:40.470 honoring her; 00:22:40.470 --> 00:22:42.470 and He has not made me arrogant, 00:22:42.470 --> 00:22:44.470 haughty, or a committer 00:22:44.470 --> 00:22:46.470 to sins and destructive vices. 00:22:46.470 --> 00:22:48.470 And peace and security 00:22:48.470 --> 00:22:50.470 from Allah, Blessed and Exalted, 00:22:50.470 --> 00:22:52.470 be upon me the day I was born, 00:22:52.470 --> 00:22:54.470 and the day I die, 00:22:54.470 --> 00:22:56.470 departing from this world, 00:22:56.470 --> 00:22:58.470 and the day I am raised alive 00:22:58.470 --> 00:23:00.470 for the reckoning and recompense 00:23:00.470 --> 00:23:02.700 on the Day of Resurrection. 00:23:02.700 --> 00:23:04.700 So when 'Isa, 00:23:04.700 --> 00:23:06.700 peace be upon him, spoke this to them, 00:23:06.700 --> 00:23:08.700 they realized Maryam's innocence. 00:23:08.700 --> 00:23:10.730 Then 'Isa, 00:23:10.730 --> 00:23:12.730 peace be upon him, fell silent 00:23:12.730 --> 00:23:14.730 and did not speak after that 00:23:14.730 --> 00:23:16.730 until he reached the age 00:23:16.730 --> 00:23:18.730 at which normal 00:23:18.730 --> 00:23:20.920 children speak. 00:23:20.920 --> 00:23:23.210 Allah Almighty said: 00:23:23.210 --> 00:23:25.210 "Then she brought him to her people, 00:23:25.210 --> 00:23:27.210 carrying him. 00:23:27.210 --> 00:23:29.210 They said, 'O Maryam, 00:23:29.210 --> 00:23:33.210 “Then she brought him to her own folk, carrying him. They said: O Mary! Thou hast come with an amazing thing.” (19:27) 00:23:33.210 --> 00:23:35.210 O sister of Harun, 00:23:35.210 --> 00:23:37.210 your father was not 00:23:37.210 --> 00:23:39.210 a man of evil, 00:23:39.210 --> 00:23:41.210 nor was your mother 00:23:41.210 --> 00:23:43.210 unchaste.' 00:23:43.210 --> 00:23:45.210 So she pointed to him. 00:23:45.210 --> 00:23:47.210 They said, 00:23:47.210 --> 00:23:49.210 'How can we speak 00:23:49.210 --> 00:23:51.210 “Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy?” (19:29) 00:23:51.210 --> 00:23:53.210 to a child in the cradle?' 00:23:53.210 --> 00:23:55.210 He said, 'Indeed, 00:23:55.210 --> 00:23:57.210 I am the servant of Allah. 00:23:57.210 --> 00:23:59.210 He has given me the Scripture 00:23:59.210 --> 00:24:01.210 and made me a prophet, 00:24:01.210 --> 00:24:03.210 and He has made me 00:24:03.210 --> 00:24:05.210 blessed 00:24:05.210 --> 00:24:07.210 wherever I may be, 00:24:07.210 --> 00:24:09.210 and has enjoined upon me prayer 00:24:09.210 --> 00:24:11.210 and has enjoined upon me prayer 00:24:11.210 --> 00:24:13.210 and zakat 00:24:13.210 --> 00:24:15.210 as long as I remain alive, 00:24:15.210 --> 00:24:17.210 and to be dutiful 00:24:17.210 --> 00:24:19.210 to my mother, 00:24:19.210 --> 00:24:21.210 and He has not made me 00:24:21.210 --> 00:24:23.210 a tyrannical, wretched tyrant. 00:24:23.210 --> 00:24:25.210 And peace 00:24:25.210 --> 00:24:27.210 be upon me the day 00:24:27.210 --> 00:24:29.210 I was born, and the day I die, 00:24:29.210 --> 00:24:31.210 and the day I am raised 00:24:31.210 --> 00:24:34.970 alive.'" 00:24:34.970 --> 00:24:36.970 A delegation from the Christians of 00:24:36.970 --> 00:24:38.970 Najran came to the Messenger of Allah, 00:24:38.970 --> 00:24:40.970 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:24:40.970 --> 00:24:42.970 and said, "Why do you 00:24:42.970 --> 00:24:44.970 revile our master?"— 00:24:44.970 --> 00:24:46.970 meaning the Prophet of Allah, 00:24:46.970 --> 00:24:49.000 'Isa, peace be upon him. 00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:51.000 He said, "What do I say?" 00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:53.000 They said, 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:55.000 "You say that he is a servant of Allah." 00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:57.099 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied, 00:24:57.099 --> 00:24:59.099 "Yes, 00:24:59.099 --> 00:25:01.099 he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger, 00:25:01.099 --> 00:25:03.099 and His word 00:25:03.099 --> 00:25:05.099 which He bestowed upon Maryam, 00:25:05.099 --> 00:25:07.099 the pure virgin." 00:25:07.099 --> 00:25:09.099 So they became angry and said, 00:25:09.099 --> 00:25:11.099 "Have you ever seen a human being 00:25:11.099 --> 00:25:13.130 without a father? 00:25:13.130 --> 00:25:15.130 If you are truthful, 00:25:15.130 --> 00:25:17.130 then show us his like." 00:25:17.130 --> 00:25:19.130 Thereupon, Allah Almighty revealed 00:25:19.130 --> 00:25:21.160 His saying: 00:25:21.160 --> 00:25:23.160 "Indeed, the example of 'Isa 00:25:23.160 --> 00:25:25.160 before Allah is like that of Adam. 00:25:25.160 --> 00:25:27.160 He created him 00:25:27.160 --> 00:25:29.160 from dust; 00:25:29.160 --> 00:25:31.160 then 00:25:31.160 --> 00:25:33.160 He said to him, 00:25:33.160 --> 00:25:35.160 'Be,' and he was. 00:25:35.160 --> 00:25:37.160 The truth is from your Lord, 00:25:37.160 --> 00:25:39.160 “(This is) the truth from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.” (3:60) 00:25:39.160 --> 00:25:41.160 so do not be among the doubters. 00:25:41.160 --> 00:25:43.160 Then whoever 00:25:43.160 --> 00:25:45.160 argues with you 00:25:45.160 --> 00:25:47.160 concerning him 00:25:47.160 --> 00:25:49.160 after what has come to you 00:25:49.160 --> 00:25:51.160 of knowledge, 00:25:51.160 --> 00:25:53.160 say, 'Come, 00:25:53.160 --> 00:25:55.160 say, 'Come, 00:25:55.160 --> 00:25:57.160 let us call our sons 00:25:57.160 --> 00:25:59.160 and your sons, 00:25:59.160 --> 00:26:01.160 our women 00:26:01.160 --> 00:26:03.160 and your women, 00:26:03.160 --> 00:26:05.160 our women 00:26:05.160 --> 00:26:07.160 and your women, 00:26:07.160 --> 00:26:09.160 and ourselves 00:26:09.160 --> 00:26:11.160 and yourselves, 00:26:11.160 --> 00:26:13.160 and ourselves 00:26:13.160 --> 00:26:15.160 and yourselves, 00:26:15.160 --> 00:26:17.160 then 00:26:17.160 --> 00:26:19.160 let us pray humbly and invoke 00:26:19.160 --> 00:26:21.160 the curse of Allah 00:26:21.160 --> 00:26:23.160 upon the liars.' 00:26:23.160 --> 00:26:25.160 Indeed, this 00:26:25.160 --> 00:26:27.160 is the true 00:26:27.160 --> 00:26:29.160 narrative. 00:26:29.160 --> 00:26:31.160 And there is no deity 00:26:31.160 --> 00:26:33.160 except Allah. 00:26:33.160 --> 00:26:35.160 And indeed, Allah 00:26:35.160 --> 00:26:37.160 is the Exalted in Might, 00:26:37.160 --> 00:26:39.160 the Wise. 00:26:39.160 --> 00:26:41.160 But if they turn away, 00:26:41.160 --> 00:26:43.160 then indeed, Allah 00:26:43.160 --> 00:26:45.160 is All-Knowing 00:26:45.160 --> 00:26:47.160 of the corrupt." 00:26:47.160 --> 00:26:49.990 Allah Almighty directed 00:26:49.990 --> 00:26:51.990 His Prophet Muhammad, 00:26:51.990 --> 00:26:53.990 peace be upon him, 00:26:53.990 --> 00:26:55.990 saying to him in effect: 00:26:55.990 --> 00:26:57.990 If the People of the Book dispute with you 00:26:57.990 --> 00:26:59.990 concerning 'Isa 00:26:59.990 --> 00:27:01.990 after I have informed you of what is 00:27:01.990 --> 00:27:03.990 the truth of his matter, 00:27:03.990 --> 00:27:05.990 then challenge them to mutual imprecation (mubahalah), 00:27:05.990 --> 00:27:07.990 and say to them: 00:27:07.990 --> 00:27:09.990 "Come, O disputants, 00:27:09.990 --> 00:27:11.990 to a decisive test wherein the truth will be distinguished 00:27:11.990 --> 00:27:13.990 from falsehood, 00:27:13.990 --> 00:27:15.990 which is that we and you summon one another, 00:27:15.990 --> 00:27:17.990 and gather 00:27:17.990 --> 00:27:19.990 all together in one place, 00:27:19.990 --> 00:27:21.990 and then beseech 00:27:21.990 --> 00:27:23.990 Allah and pray earnestly to Him 00:27:23.990 --> 00:27:25.990 that He place His curse 00:27:25.990 --> 00:27:27.990 upon those who are lying in their claim, 00:27:27.990 --> 00:27:29.990 deviating from 00:27:29.990 --> 00:27:31.990 the truth in their belief." 00:27:31.990 --> 00:27:33.990 So they said, 00:27:33.990 --> 00:27:35.990 "O Abu al-Qasim, let us 00:27:35.990 --> 00:27:38.059 consider our affair." 00:27:38.059 --> 00:27:40.059 Then they consulted among themselves 00:27:40.059 --> 00:27:42.059 and said, "By Allah, 00:27:42.059 --> 00:27:44.059 O assembly of Christians, 00:27:44.059 --> 00:27:46.059 you well know that Muhammad 00:27:46.059 --> 00:27:48.059 is indeed a sent prophet, 00:27:48.059 --> 00:27:50.059 and he has brought you the decisive truth 00:27:50.059 --> 00:27:52.059 regarding the account of your master. 00:27:52.059 --> 00:27:54.059 And you certainly know 00:27:54.059 --> 00:27:56.059 that never has a people invoked mutual curses with a prophet 00:27:56.059 --> 00:27:58.059 and had their elders 00:27:58.059 --> 00:28:00.059 survive or their youth 00:28:00.059 --> 00:28:02.059 grow up; it would truly be 00:28:02.059 --> 00:28:04.059 your total eradication if you do so." 00:28:04.059 --> 00:28:06.279 So they came back to the Prophet, 00:28:06.279 --> 00:28:08.279 peace be upon him, 00:28:08.279 --> 00:28:10.279 and said, "O Abu 00:28:10.279 --> 00:28:12.279 al-Qasim, we have decided 00:28:12.279 --> 00:28:14.279 not to invoke curses with you, 00:28:14.279 --> 00:28:16.279 but to leave you upon your religion 00:28:16.279 --> 00:28:18.279 while we return to ours." 00:28:18.279 --> 00:28:20.410 So he did not engage in mutual imprecation with them, 00:28:20.410 --> 00:28:22.410 peace be upon him, 00:28:22.410 --> 00:28:24.410 and agreed to let them pay a tribute (kharaj) 00:28:24.410 --> 00:28:28.099 that they would deliver to him. 00:28:28.099 --> 00:28:30.099 To be continued, 00:28:30.099 --> 00:28:32.099 if Allah wills. 00:28:32.099 --> 00:28:34.099 And Allah knows best. 00:28:34.099 --> 00:28:36.099 All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. 00:28:36.099 --> 00:28:38.099 May the peace and blessings of Allah be 00:28:38.099 --> 00:28:40.099 upon our Prophet Muhammad, 00:28:40.099 --> 00:28:42.099 and upon his family and companions, 00:28:42.099 --> 00:28:45.289 all together. 00:28:45.289 --> 00:28:47.289 You have been listening to "Stories of the Prophets."
