WEBVTT 00:00:00.460 --> 00:00:09.009 Stories of the Prophets, stories of the Prophets, peace be upon them. 00:00:09.009 --> 00:00:13.970 Allah's blessings, followed by peace, 00:00:13.970 --> 00:00:19.059 Be upon the best of all creation, 00:00:19.059 --> 00:00:23.699 Those of firm resolve and lofty station. 00:00:23.949 --> 00:00:29.390 The story of Musa (Moses), peace be upon him. 00:00:29.390 --> 00:00:34.100 In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. 00:00:34.539 --> 00:00:37.179 All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, 00:00:37.179 --> 00:00:40.619 And peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, 00:00:40.619 --> 00:00:43.899 And upon all his family and Companions. 00:00:43.899 --> 00:00:45.490 To proceed: 00:00:45.490 --> 00:00:49.570 After Musa, peace be upon him, returned to the Children of Israel, 00:00:49.570 --> 00:00:52.929 Accompanied by seventy of their best men, 00:00:52.929 --> 00:00:58.450 Allah Almighty commanded him to march with the Children of Israel to the Holy Land, 00:00:58.450 --> 00:01:00.850 In the land of Palestine, 00:01:00.850 --> 00:01:04.370 For Allah had destined it as a homeland for them. 00:01:04.370 --> 00:01:08.530 So Musa, peace be upon him, informed them of Allah's command to them, 00:01:08.530 --> 00:01:12.959 But they said, "We have no knowledge of that land." 00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:18.799 Then Allah Almighty revealed to Musa to choose twelve leaders from his people, 00:01:18.799 --> 00:01:22.480 And commanded him to send them to the Holy Land, 00:01:22.480 --> 00:01:25.439 To scout out the conditions of its inhabitants 00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:29.099 And to bring back information about them. 00:01:29.099 --> 00:01:33.650 Musa, peace be upon him, carried out what his Lord had commanded him, 00:01:33.810 --> 00:01:36.930 And among the things he instructed the scouts was: 00:01:36.930 --> 00:01:41.099 "Do not tell anyone other than me what you see." 00:01:41.099 --> 00:01:44.540 When the scouts entered the Holy Land, 00:01:44.540 --> 00:01:47.579 They examined the conditions of its inhabitants, 00:01:47.579 --> 00:01:50.700 And found therein a people of tyrannical stature and power, 00:01:50.700 --> 00:01:53.500 From the Canaanites and others, 00:01:53.500 --> 00:01:55.739 Who worshipped idols; 00:01:55.739 --> 00:02:02.370 And they witnessed their immense strength and huge bodies. 00:02:02.450 --> 00:02:05.890 The scouts returned to Musa, peace be upon him, 00:02:05.890 --> 00:02:10.449 And said to him, while he was amidst a group of the Children of Israel: 00:02:10.449 --> 00:02:14.370 "We have gone to the land to which you sent us, 00:02:14.370 --> 00:02:18.610 And it is indeed a land flowing with milk and honey, 00:02:18.610 --> 00:02:21.650 And here is some of its fruit; 00:02:21.650 --> 00:02:24.849 However, the people who dwell therein are powerful, 00:02:24.849 --> 00:02:27.250 And their cities are fortified." 00:02:27.250 --> 00:02:32.449 And each of the scouts began dissuading his own tribe from fighting. 00:02:32.449 --> 00:02:36.129 Musa, peace be upon him, ordered them to enter against them, 00:02:36.129 --> 00:02:40.289 To fight them, and to expel them from Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), 00:02:40.289 --> 00:02:44.750 For Allah had destined it for them and promised it to them. 00:02:44.750 --> 00:02:48.020 But they refused and shrank back from jihad. 00:02:48.020 --> 00:02:51.780 So the Prophet of Allah reminded them of Allah’s favor upon them 00:02:51.780 --> 00:02:56.259 And His benevolence toward them with both religious and worldly blessings, 00:02:56.259 --> 00:02:58.580 And he warned them, saying: 00:02:58.580 --> 00:03:03.780 "Do not turn on your heels and shrink back from fighting your enemies, 00:03:03.780 --> 00:03:08.699 Lest you lose after gaining, and diminish after being made whole." 00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:13.500 “They said: O Moses! So put your trust (in Allah) if ye are indeed believers.” (5:23) 00:04:09.389 --> 00:04:11.550 The Children of Israel said: 00:04:11.550 --> 00:04:16.670 "We will never enter it as long as those people remain in it. 00:04:16.670 --> 00:04:20.189 So go, O Musa, you and your Lord, and fight! 00:04:20.189 --> 00:04:23.230 We are sitting right here." 00:04:23.310 --> 00:04:26.269 What a monstrous word they uttered! 00:04:26.269 --> 00:04:29.629 Musa and Harun, peace be upon them, fell down in prostration, 00:04:29.629 --> 00:04:32.029 Aghast at the gravity of these words, 00:04:32.029 --> 00:04:34.829 Out of wrath for the sake of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, 00:04:34.829 --> 00:04:39.680 And out of pity for them regarding the dire consequences of this speech. 00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:43.279 Yet most of them remained resolute in turning away from jihad, 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:48.610 And a grave situation and great faint-heartedness took hold. 00:04:48.610 --> 00:04:53.089 Thereupon, Musa, peace be upon him, said to his Lord in apology: 00:04:53.089 --> 00:04:57.329 “He said: My Lord! I have control of none but myself and my brother, so distinguish between us and the wrong-doing folk.” (5:25) 00:04:57.329 --> 00:05:01.730 “He said: My Lord! And we caused the white cloud to overshadow them and sent down for them the manna and the quails (saying): Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you. We are weary of one kind of food; so call upon thy Lord for us that He bring forth for us of that which the earth groweth - of its herbs and its cucumbers and its corn and its lentils and its onions. He said: Would ye exchange that which is higher for that which is lower? Go down to settled country, thus ye shall get that which ye demand. And humiliation and wretchedness were stamped upon them and they were visited with wrath from Allah. That was because they disbelieved in Allah's revelations and slew the prophets wrongfully. And humiliation and wretchedness were stamped upon them and they were visited with wrath from Allah. That was because they disbelieved in Allah's revelations and slew the prophets wrongfully. That was for their disobedience and transgression.” (2:61) 00:13:55.169 --> 00:14:00.129 "That was because they disobeyed and were habitually transgressing." 00:14:00.129 --> 00:14:05.440 Despite all these favors that Allah had bestowed 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:07.440 Upon them while they were wandering in the wilderness, 00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:11.440 Defiance and disobedience continued to manifest among the Children of Israel. 00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:15.440 They cast aside the rulings contained in the Torah 00:14:15.440 --> 00:14:17.440 And brazenly committed forbidden acts. 00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:21.440 While they were sitting one day near a mountain, 00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:23.440 Blindly wandering in their transgression, 00:14:23.440 --> 00:14:25.440 Allah commanded the mountain, 00:14:25.440 --> 00:14:27.440 So it was uprooted from its place 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:29.440 And raised into the sky, 00:14:29.440 --> 00:14:33.440 Until, when it hovered between their heads and the sky, 00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:35.440 Musa said to them: 00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:39.470 "Do you not see what my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious, says? 00:14:39.470 --> 00:14:42.470 'If you do not accept the Torah and all that is in it, 00:14:42.470 --> 00:14:44.470 And abide by its rulings, 00:14:44.470 --> 00:14:47.470 I will certainly drop this mountain upon you.'" 00:14:47.470 --> 00:14:52.470 Thereupon, every man among them fell down prostrating on his left temple, 00:14:52.470 --> 00:14:55.470 Looking up with his right eye at the mountain, 00:14:55.470 --> 00:14:58.470 In terror that it might fall upon him. 00:14:58.470 --> 00:15:00.820 Allah Almighty said: 00:15:01.820 --> 00:15:04.980 "And when We raised the mountain over them 00:15:04.980 --> 00:15:07.980 As if it were a canopy..." 00:15:07.980 --> 00:15:18.980 “And when We shook the Mount above them as it were a covering, and they supposed that it was going to fall upon them (and We said): Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein, that ye may ward off (evil).” (7:171) 00:15:18.980 --> 00:15:26.980 "'Hold firmly to what We have given you 00:15:26.980 --> 00:15:28.980 And remember what is in it, 00:15:28.980 --> 00:15:31.980 So that you may become righteous.'" 00:15:31.980 --> 00:15:38.389 Among the events that took place among the Children of Israel as well 00:15:38.389 --> 00:15:41.389 Was that there was a wealthy man among them 00:15:41.389 --> 00:15:43.389 Who had a poor nephew 00:15:43.389 --> 00:15:45.389 Who was his sole heir. 00:15:45.389 --> 00:15:48.460 When his uncle's death seemed too long in coming, 00:15:48.460 --> 00:15:50.460 The nephew murdered him in order to inherit from him, 00:15:50.460 --> 00:15:53.460 Then threw his corpse onto the road, 00:15:53.460 --> 00:15:55.460 And subsequently began demanding vengeance for his blood. 00:15:55.460 --> 00:15:59.460 He brought a group of people before Musa, peace be upon him, 00:15:59.460 --> 00:16:02.519 Accusing them of the murder. 00:16:02.519 --> 00:16:04.519 Musa, peace be upon him, questioned them, 00:16:04.519 --> 00:16:06.519 But they denied it, 00:16:06.519 --> 00:16:08.519 And they asked him to supplicate to Allah 00:16:08.519 --> 00:16:12.649 To clarify for them who the real killer was. 00:16:12.649 --> 00:16:15.649 So Musa, peace be upon him, prayed to his Lord, 00:16:15.649 --> 00:16:17.649 So Allah Almighty revealed to him 00:16:17.649 --> 00:16:20.649 to demand that they sacrifice a cow. 00:16:20.649 --> 00:16:22.740 And Allah Almighty commanded them 00:16:22.740 --> 00:16:26.740 to slaughter a cow rather than any other animal 00:16:26.740 --> 00:16:28.740 because it was of the same species as what they had worshipped, 00:16:28.740 --> 00:16:30.740 namely the calf. 00:16:30.740 --> 00:16:33.779 The people's response to this command was 00:16:33.779 --> 00:16:34.779 that they said, 00:16:34.779 --> 00:16:37.779 "Are you ridiculing us and mocking us?" 00:16:37.779 --> 00:16:40.779 Moses, peace be upon him, answered them, 00:16:40.779 --> 00:16:42.779 "I am not ridiculing you, 00:16:42.779 --> 00:16:44.779 nor am I mocking you; 00:16:44.779 --> 00:16:46.779 for such is not my way, 00:16:46.779 --> 00:16:48.779 nor is it of my character, 00:16:48.779 --> 00:16:51.779 but rather it is the command of Allah to you." 00:16:51.779 --> 00:16:55.940 When the people saw that he was serious in what he said, 00:16:55.940 --> 00:16:58.940 they asked him to clarify the description of the cow 00:16:58.940 --> 00:17:01.940 that they were required to sacrifice. 00:17:01.940 --> 00:17:05.160 So Moses, peace be upon him, informed them 00:17:05.160 --> 00:17:09.160 that the required cow must be of middling age, 00:17:09.160 --> 00:17:12.160 neither too young nor too old. 00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:14.289 Nevertheless, 00:17:14.289 --> 00:17:17.289 the people insisted on being overly pedantic in their demands 00:17:17.289 --> 00:17:20.289 and excessively probing in their questioning. 00:17:20.289 --> 00:17:22.289 They began inquiring about its color 00:17:22.289 --> 00:17:24.289 after having learned its age. 00:17:24.289 --> 00:17:28.319 Moses, peace be upon him, answered them by saying 00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:32.319 that the cow Allah commanded you to sacrifice 00:17:32.319 --> 00:17:34.319 is yellow, intensely bright in color, 00:17:34.319 --> 00:17:37.319 delighting in its appearance and sight, 00:17:37.319 --> 00:17:39.319 and in the beauty of its form, 00:17:39.319 --> 00:17:41.319 those who look at it. 00:17:41.319 --> 00:17:44.319 Yet these descriptions they had asked about 00:17:44.319 --> 00:17:46.319 were still not enough for them, 00:17:46.319 --> 00:17:49.319 and they began asking about what they had no need to question. 00:17:49.319 --> 00:17:52.319 They asked Moses to pray to his Lord 00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:57.319 to further clarify the nature of the cow they were commanded to slaughter. 00:17:57.319 --> 00:18:00.450 Moses, peace be upon him, answered them 00:18:00.450 --> 00:18:03.450 that among its traits is that it is free-roaming, 00:18:03.450 --> 00:18:08.450 not broken to till the soil or water the fields, 00:18:08.450 --> 00:18:11.450 sound and free from all defects, 00:18:11.450 --> 00:18:15.450 with no blemish differing from its color. 00:18:15.450 --> 00:18:19.450 When they found that all its traits and distinctive features 00:18:19.450 --> 00:18:21.450 had been fully laid out to them, 00:18:21.450 --> 00:18:25.450 they conceded that the matter had finally become clear to them. 00:18:25.450 --> 00:18:28.450 So they set out searching for that cow, 00:18:28.450 --> 00:18:31.450 and they were near to not finding it, 00:18:31.450 --> 00:18:33.450 save for a single cow 00:18:33.450 --> 00:18:36.450 that met those exact specifications. 00:18:36.450 --> 00:18:39.450 So they bought it for its weight in gold. 00:18:39.450 --> 00:18:43.480 Any cow would have sufficed them at the outset, 00:18:43.480 --> 00:18:45.480 but when they were overly rigid, 00:18:45.480 --> 00:18:48.480 Allah made it burdensome for them. 00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:53.950 Then Moses, peace be upon him, commanded them to slaughter the cow, 00:18:53.950 --> 00:18:55.950 so they slaughtered it. 00:18:55.950 --> 00:19:00.950 He then instructed them to strike the slain man with a piece of the cow, 00:19:00.950 --> 00:19:02.950 and they did so. 00:19:02.950 --> 00:19:05.950 Life then returned to the man anew, 00:19:05.950 --> 00:19:08.950 and he stood up and identified his killer, 00:19:08.950 --> 00:19:09.950 saying, 00:19:09.950 --> 00:19:14.950 "The one who killed me is my heir, my nephew." 00:19:14.950 --> 00:19:16.980 Then he died. 00:19:16.980 --> 00:19:19.299 Allah Almighty said: 00:19:19.299 --> 00:19:22.559 "And when Moses said to his people, 00:19:22.559 --> 00:19:28.559 “And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make game of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish!” (2:67) 00:19:28.559 --> 00:19:32.559 They said, 'Do you take us in ridicule?' 00:19:32.559 --> 00:19:38.559 “And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make game of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish!” (2:67) 00:19:38.559 --> 00:19:43.559 They said, 'Pray to your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is.' 00:19:43.559 --> 00:19:55.559 “They said: Pray for us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. (Moses) answered: Lo! (Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a yellow cow. Bright is her colour, gladdening beholders.” (2:69) 00:20:25.559 --> 00:20:43.559 They said, 'Pray to your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is; indeed, cows look alike to us, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided.'" 00:20:43.559 --> 00:21:00.559 “(Moses) answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow unyoked; she plougheth not the soil nor watereth the tilth; whole and without mark. They said: Now thou bringest the truth.
