A new challenge: Who am I?
I am a Qurayshi female Companion.
I embraced Islam in Makkah before the Hijrah.
And I migrated to Madinah.
I was among the most intelligent and virtuous of women.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to visit us.
And he would take a midday nap at our home.
I had set aside a special garment for him for this purpose.
I kept this garment and the bedding.
Upon which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to sleep.
I was among the few who knew how to read and write during the Jahiliyyah.
Furthermore, I was a physician and a practitioner of Ruqyah.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave me a house in Madinah.
So that the house would become a center of learning for women.
I taught the women of the Muslims there how to read, write, practice medicine, and perform Ruqyah.
Thus, I am the first female teacher in Islam.
Among those who studied under me was.
Hafsah bint Umar.
The wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
I used to go out with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on his military expeditions.
To treat the wounded.
The Companions used to come to my house for medical treatment.
One day, a man from the Ansar was afflicted with a condition called 'al-namlah'.
These are sores that appear on the sides of the body.
It was named as such because the patient feels in the area of the sores.
As if an ant is walking on them and biting them.
So they directed him to me.
He came to me and asked me to perform Ruqyah on him.
I said to him:
"By Allah, I have not performed Ruqyah on anyone since I embraced Islam."
The man went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
And informed him of what I had said.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, summoned me.
And said:
So I presented it to him.
He said:
"Just as you taught her writing."
Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to defer to my opinion.
He cared for me and favored me over other women.
And since that time:
I came to him one day.
And found 'Atikah bint Usayd at his door.
We entered together to see him.
We spoke for a while in his presence.
He called for a mat.
And gave it to me.
Then he called for a lesser mat.
And gave it to 'Atikah.
'Atikah said:
"May your hands be covered in dust, O Umar!
I am earlier than her in Islam.
And I am your cousin, unlike her.
You sent for me.
And she came to you of her own accord.
Yet you give her something better than what you gave me."
He said to her:
"I had only set that one aside for you.
But when you both gathered.
I remembered that she is closer to the Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, than you are.
So I gave her precedence over you."
Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived one day.
For the Fajr prayer.
Then he passed by me and said:
"O Umm Sulayman,
I did not see Sulayman at the morning prayer."
I said to him:
"He spent the night in prayer.
And his eyes overcame him."
Umar said:
"For me to attend the morning prayer in congregation.
Is more beloved to me than standing in prayer for the whole night."
One day, I saw some young men walking with a slow, deliberate gait.
And speaking softly.
I said: "What is this?"
They said: "We are ascetics."
I said to them:
"By Allah, when Umar spoke, he was heard.
When he walked, he moved quickly.
And when he struck, he caused pain.
And he, by Allah, is the true ascetic."
