Pause and identify the Companions, scholars, and prominent figures.
A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the noble Companions.
I am the father of the keeper of the secret of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
I am an ally of the Ansar.
I shed blood among my people during the pre-Islamic era.
So I fled from them to Medina.
And I formed an alliance with the Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal.
I embraced Islam when I was a very old man.
I witnessed the Battle of Uhud with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I did not witness the Battle of Badr with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Nothing prevented me from witnessing it,
except that I had gone out with my son to the outskirts of Medina.
The disbelievers of Quraysh intercepted us while we were on the road.
They said, "You are heading to Muhammad."
We replied, "We only intend to go to Medina."
They made us swear by the covenant and pledge of Allah that we would return to Medina,
and not fight alongside him.
We came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and informed him.
He said, "Go back; we will fulfill our covenant with them,
and we will seek Allah's help against them."
When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, set out for the Battle of Uhud,
he placed me and Thabit Ibn Waqsh, may Allah be pleased with him,
in the fortress with the women and children,
because we were two very old men unable to fight.
When the battle began,
I said to my companion,
"May you lose your father!
What are we waiting for?
By Allah, there is little of our lives left.
We are but souls destined to die today or tomorrow.
Shall we not take our swords,
and join the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?
Perhaps Allah will grant us martyrdom alongside him."
So we took our swords,
and joined the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
We entered among the Muslims while they were unaware of us.
As for my companion, Thabit Ibn Waqsh,
he was quickly killed by the polytheists.
As for me,
I was struck by the swords and spears of the Muslims,
while they did not recognize me.
My son shouted to them and said,
"My father! It is my father!"
But they did not realize it until after they had killed me.
They said, "By Allah, we did not know him."
And they spoke the truth.
My son said,
"May Allah forgive you,
for He is the Most Merciful of the merciful."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, wanted
to give his blood money,
but he did not accept it,
and instead gave it as charity to the Muslims.
This increased his standing and merit
in the sight of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
and he prayed for his well-being.
