Forty hadiths on the virtue of charity.
Narrated by Jarir Ibn 'Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"There is no person who has a relative and goes to that relative,
asking him for some of the bounty that Allah has bestowed upon him,
and he withholds it from him,
but that Allah will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection, from Hell, a serpent,
called 'Shuja'', which flicks its tongue, and it will be coiled around his neck."
Recorded by al-Tabarani and authenticated by al-Albani.
Regarding the meaning of his words, "a serpent that flicks its tongue and is coiled around him":
The "Shuja'" is a type of male snake.
"Flicks its tongue" means that the snake moves its tongue and thrusts it out.
"Coiled around him" means that it wraps itself around him.
The hadith contains a warning for the miser who withholds what is due,
specifically the wealth that he is obligated to spend,
and who denies the seeker that which is surplus to his own needs.
