a delegation from the Banu Asad arrived in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, 00:00:57.229 --> 00:01:01.229 headed by Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi. 00:01:01.229 --> 00:01:04.459 When they reached the Prophet’s Mosque, 00:01:04.459 --> 00:01:08.459 they stood before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:01:08.459 --> 00:01:11.459 Then their spokesman stood up and said: 00:01:11.459 --> 00:01:13.459 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:01:13.459 --> 00:01:16.459 we bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, 00:01:16.459 --> 00:01:19.459 and we bear witness that you are His servant and His messenger, 00:01:19.459 --> 00:01:23.459 and that He sent you with the religion of guidance and truth. 00:01:23.459 --> 00:01:26.459 We have come to you of our own accord, 00:01:26.459 --> 00:01:28.459 though you did not send anyone to summon us, 00:01:28.459 --> 00:01:31.459 so accept our Islam, O Messenger of Allah." 00:01:31.459 --> 00:01:36.519 The Prophet, peace be upon him, welcomed them most generously 00:01:36.519 --> 00:01:38.519 and accommodated them in the finest manner. 00:01:38.519 --> 00:01:41.620 Yet, before long, Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid's 00:01:41.620 --> 00:01:46.620 heart turned against the greatest Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:01:46.620 --> 00:01:49.620 and envy crept into his breast. 00:01:49.620 --> 00:01:51.620 He began pondering the Prophet's affair 00:01:51.620 --> 00:01:53.620 and how it had started small, 00:01:53.620 --> 00:01:57.620 only to grow and expand day after day, 00:01:57.620 --> 00:02:03.620 until the entire Arabian Peninsula, from end to end, submitted to him in loyalty and obedience. 00:02:03.620 --> 00:02:08.650 Then Tulayhah's devil began enticing him and filling him with false hopes, 00:02:08.650 --> 00:02:10.650 whispering to him: 00:02:10.650 --> 00:02:13.650 "O Tulayhah, how can Muhammad compare to you? 00:02:13.650 --> 00:02:16.650 He is not more eloquent in speech than you, 00:02:16.650 --> 00:02:19.650 for you are a man of letters, discerning, and a poet. 00:02:19.650 --> 00:02:22.650 Nor is he braver of heart than you, 00:02:22.650 --> 00:02:24.650 for you are the most courageous of the Arabs, 00:02:24.650 --> 00:02:26.650 and the fiercest in might, 00:02:26.650 --> 00:02:31.650 to the point that people count you equal to a thousand horsemen when battle rages! 00:02:31.650 --> 00:02:35.710 Furthermore, he does not possess a nobler clan than yours, 00:02:35.710 --> 00:02:37.710 for you belong to the Banu Asad, 00:02:37.710 --> 00:02:40.710 and the Banu Asad are kindlers of war, 00:02:40.710 --> 00:02:43.710 renowned for their memorable days on the battlefield 00:02:43.710 --> 00:02:45.710 and their celebrated feats." 00:02:45.710 --> 00:02:48.840 When the delegation returned to their homelands, 00:02:48.840 --> 00:02:51.840 Tulayhah stood up among the Banu Asad, 00:02:51.840 --> 00:02:55.840 claiming to them that he was a prophet sent by Allah. 00:02:55.840 --> 00:02:57.840 They all followed him, 00:02:57.840 --> 00:02:59.840 either out of belief in him 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:01.840 or out of tribal solidarity. 00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:06.060 The Messenger, peace be upon him, dispatched an army 00:03:06.060 --> 00:03:08.060 under the command of Dirar ibn al-Azwar 00:03:08.060 --> 00:03:11.060 to fight Tulayhah and his people. 00:03:11.060 --> 00:03:14.060 The believing army fought valiantly against the Banu Asad 00:03:14.060 --> 00:03:16.060 and their allies, dealing them a severe blow, 00:03:16.060 --> 00:03:19.060 and Tulayhah's cause was on the verge of collapse 00:03:19.060 --> 00:03:22.060 had not Dirar met him face to face 00:03:22.060 --> 00:03:24.060 and struck him with his sword. 00:03:24.060 --> 00:03:27.060 But Allah willed that the sword glance off him 00:03:27.060 --> 00:03:29.060 without leaving a mark. 00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:31.060 Tulayhah seized upon that moment 00:03:31.060 --> 00:03:36.060 and began spreading among his people that Allah was protecting and defending him, 00:03:36.060 --> 00:03:40.060 and that sharp swords could not pierce his body. 00:03:40.060 --> 00:03:43.060 Thus, those who had dispersed from him rallied around him once again, 00:03:43.060 --> 00:03:45.060 and a great multitude followed him. 00:03:45.060 --> 00:03:48.060 His power was further reinforced 00:03:48.060 --> 00:03:52.060 by the passing of the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:03:52.060 --> 00:03:55.060 the apostasy of many Arabs from the religion of Allah, 00:03:55.060 --> 00:03:59.060 and their departure from Islam in droves, 00:03:59.060 --> 00:04:02.060 just as they had entered it in droves. 00:04:02.060 --> 00:04:07.129 No sooner had Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed leadership of the Muslims 00:04:07.129 --> 00:04:12.129 than he tied eleven banners for eleven commanders, 00:04:12.129 --> 00:04:15.129 directing them all to fight the apostates. 00:04:15.129 --> 00:04:19.129 Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid and his people, the Banu Asad, 00:04:19.129 --> 00:04:21.129 fell to the share of Khalid ibn al-Walid. 00:04:21.129 --> 00:04:26.129 The Sword of Allah set out toward the homelands of the Banu Asad in Najd, 00:04:26.129 --> 00:04:32.129 sending ahead of his army two intrepid Muslim scouts: 00:04:32.129 --> 00:04:36.129 Ukkashah ibn Mihsan and Thabit ibn Aqram, 00:04:36.129 --> 00:04:38.129 to scout the land 00:04:38.129 --> 00:04:41.129 and gather intelligence for the Muslims. 00:04:41.129 --> 00:04:45.129 But Tulayhah caught them and killed them both in a brutal manner. 00:04:45.129 --> 00:04:48.129 When the Muslims learned of their demise, 00:04:48.129 --> 00:04:52.129 they grieved for them with the deepest and most bitter sorrow, 00:04:52.129 --> 00:04:55.129 and swore to avenge them 00:04:55.129 --> 00:04:57.129 no matter how high the cost. 00:04:57.129 --> 00:05:02.379 The two hosts met at the well of Buzakhah in the land of Najd, 00:05:02.379 --> 00:05:05.379 clashing in a fierce and ruthless battle. 00:05:05.379 --> 00:05:07.379 In the beginning, the two sides were evenly matched. 00:05:07.379 --> 00:05:09.379 The chieftain of the Banu Fazārah, 00:05:09.379 --> 00:05:11.379 Uyayanah ibn Hisn, 00:05:11.379 --> 00:05:14.379 had rushed with his people to Tulayhah's aid 00:05:14.379 --> 00:05:17.379 to repel the Muslim army from him. 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:22.379 As the tide of battle began to turn in favor of the Muslims against the polytheists, 00:05:22.379 --> 00:05:24.379 Uyayanah looked over at Tulayhah 00:05:24.379 --> 00:05:27.379 and found that he had retreated into his tent, 00:05:27.379 --> 00:05:29.379 wrapped himself in his cloak, 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:33.379 and claimed to his followers that divine revelation was about to descend upon him 00:05:33.379 --> 00:05:36.379 and that Allah would reinforce him with angels. 00:05:36.379 --> 00:05:38.480 As the fighting grew fiercer 00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:42.480 and the pressure of the Muslims intensified against Tulayhah’s followers, 00:05:42.480 --> 00:05:45.480 the chieftain of the Banu Fazārah approached him and asked: 00:05:45.480 --> 00:05:48.480 "Has the angel come to you, O Tulayhah?" 00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:50.480 He replied, "No, O Uyayanah." 00:05:50.480 --> 00:05:52.480 So he returned and fought 00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:56.480 until the pressure grew even heavier upon him and his men. 00:05:56.480 --> 00:05:59.480 He rushed back to Tulayhah and demanded: 00:05:59.480 --> 00:06:02.480 "Woe to you! Has Jibril come to you?" 00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:03.480 He answered, "No." 00:06:03.480 --> 00:06:06.480 Uyayanah said, "Until when? 00:06:06.480 --> 00:06:10.480 By Allah, we are utterly exhausted!" 00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:13.480 Then he returned and fought fiercely, 00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:15.480 before rushing back once more to Tulayhah, 00:06:15.480 --> 00:06:18.480 asking, "Has Jibril come to you?" 00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:19.480 He said, "Yes." 00:06:19.480 --> 00:06:22.480 He asked, "And what did he reveal to you?" 00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:25.480 He said, "He said to me: 00:06:25.480 --> 00:06:27.480 'You have a day that you shall meet; 00:06:27.480 --> 00:06:29.480 you shall not have its beginning, 00:06:29.480 --> 00:06:31.480 but you shall have its end; 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:35.480 and thereafter you shall have a matter you will never forget.'" 00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:37.480 Uyayanah said to him: 00:06:37.480 --> 00:06:38.480 "May you perish! 00:06:38.480 --> 00:06:41.480 By Allah, I see that you indeed shall have a matter you will never forget!" 00:06:41.480 --> 00:06:44.480 Then he turned to his people and shouted: 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:46.480 "O Banu Fazārah! 00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:49.480 This man is a wicked liar!" 00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:51.480 Then he withdrew along with all those under his command. 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:54.480 The Muslims triumphed over the Banu Asad, 00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:56.480 and Tulayhah fled in defeat, 00:06:56.480 --> 00:07:00.480 seeking refuge among the Ghassanids in the Levant. 00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:03.670 Tulayhah had spent only a short time 00:07:04.670 --> 00:07:06.670 among the Ghassanids 00:07:06.670 --> 00:07:08.670 when he came to his senses. 00:07:08.670 --> 00:07:10.670 He began biting his fingers in remorse 00:07:10.670 --> 00:07:13.670 over his past transgressions, saying: 00:07:13.670 --> 00:07:15.670 "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Tulayhah! 00:07:15.670 --> 00:07:17.699 How dreadful it would have been 00:07:17.699 --> 00:07:19.699 if the sword of Dirar ibn al-Azwar 00:07:19.699 --> 00:07:21.699 had severed your head! 00:07:21.699 --> 00:07:24.699 You would have died an apostate from your faith, 00:07:24.699 --> 00:07:26.699 associating partners with your Lord, 00:07:26.699 --> 00:07:28.699 and your ultimate abode would have been the Hellfire! 00:07:28.699 --> 00:07:30.699 May your mother be bereaved of you, O Tulayhah, 00:07:30.699 --> 00:07:32.699 if you do not proceed this very hour 00:07:32.699 --> 00:07:36.699 to the successor of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:07:36.699 --> 00:07:38.699 in full submission as a Muslim, 00:07:38.699 --> 00:07:40.699 letting him do with you whatever he wills! 00:07:40.699 --> 00:07:44.699 For that is far easier for you than a single moment of torment 00:07:44.699 --> 00:07:47.699 suffered in Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection. 00:07:47.699 --> 00:07:49.699 Make a pledge to Allah, O Tulayhah, 00:07:49.699 --> 00:07:53.699 that if He keeps you safe until you reach Al-Madinah, 00:07:53.699 --> 00:07:57.699 you will place your neck, which escaped the sword of Dirar ibn al-Azwar, 00:07:57.699 --> 00:07:59.699 as a ransom for the religion of Allah 00:07:59.699 --> 00:08:01.699 and a shield for the Muslims!" 00:08:01.699 --> 00:08:03.769 Then he went down to a well, 00:08:03.769 --> 00:08:05.769 washed himself with its water, 00:08:05.769 --> 00:08:10.769 and testified that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, 00:08:10.769 --> 00:08:15.769 and that Muhammad is His servant, His messenger, His chosen one, and His close friend. 00:08:15.769 --> 00:08:18.930 Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi reached 00:08:18.930 --> 00:08:20.930 Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah 00:08:20.930 --> 00:08:23.930 and entered upon the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab, 00:08:23.930 --> 00:08:25.930 declaring his Islam. 00:08:25.930 --> 00:08:27.930 Al-Faruq said to him: 00:08:27.930 --> 00:08:28.930 "Woe to you! 00:08:28.930 --> 00:08:31.930 Are you not the one who killed the two righteous men, 00:08:31.930 --> 00:08:33.929 Ukkashah and Thabit?" 00:08:33.929 --> 00:08:35.929 Then he added: 00:08:35.929 --> 00:08:39.929 "By Allah, my heart will never feel at ease with you!" 00:08:39.929 --> 00:08:41.929 Tulayhah replied: 00:08:41.929 --> 00:08:43.929 "O Commander of the Faithful, 00:08:43.929 --> 00:08:45.929 why grieve over two men 00:08:45.929 --> 00:08:48.929 whom Allah honored with martyrdom at my hands, 00:08:48.929 --> 00:08:50.929 while I was the wretched one through them? 00:08:50.929 --> 00:08:54.929 Indeed, I ask forgiveness of Allah the Almighty and repent to Him." 00:08:54.929 --> 00:08:56.929 So Umar relented 00:08:56.929 --> 00:08:58.929 and accepted his Islam. 00:08:58.929 --> 00:09:02.120 Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid repented from his grave mistake 00:09:02.120 --> 00:09:05.120 with a sincere and heartfelt repentance, 00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:08.120 pledging to Allah to strive in His cause 00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:11.120 as long as a vein pulsed within him. 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:15.120 He resolved to plunge himself into perilous battles, 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:18.120 hoping to die as a martyr in the cause of Allah. 00:09:18.120 --> 00:09:21.120 And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, so willed. 00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:24.179 Once, the Muslims set sail by sea 00:09:24.179 --> 00:09:26.179 to campaign against the Byzantines, 00:09:26.179 --> 00:09:29.179 and among them was Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid. 00:09:29.179 --> 00:09:31.179 While they were cleaving through the waves, 00:09:31.179 --> 00:09:35.179 a massive enemy warship loomed before them, 00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:39.179 carrying troops far outnumbering them in equipment and numbers, 00:09:39.179 --> 00:09:42.179 and it began pursuing them on the open sea. 00:09:42.179 --> 00:09:44.179 Tulayhah said to his companions: 00:09:44.179 --> 00:09:46.179 "Bring us closer to it!" 00:09:46.179 --> 00:09:48.179 They said to him: 00:09:48.179 --> 00:09:51.179 "We are no match for it, O Tulayhah!" 00:09:51.179 --> 00:09:52.179 He said to them: 00:09:53.179 --> 00:09:57.179 "By Allah, either you bring our ship close to theirs, 00:09:57.179 --> 00:10:01.179 or I will strike your necks with this sword!" 00:10:01.179 --> 00:10:04.179 Finding no choice but to comply with him, 00:10:04.179 --> 00:10:07.179 when the two ships drew alongside each other, 00:10:07.179 --> 00:10:09.179 Tulayhah said to those with him, 00:10:09.179 --> 00:10:11.179 "Lift me up on your arms 00:10:11.179 --> 00:10:14.179 and hurl me onto the Byzantine ship, 00:10:14.179 --> 00:10:18.179 and, if Allah wills, I will show you what delights your eyes." 00:10:18.179 --> 00:10:20.179 So they did as he commanded them, 00:10:20.179 --> 00:10:22.179 and in mere moments, 00:10:22.179 --> 00:10:25.179 Tulayhah leaped onto the enemy ship 00:10:25.179 --> 00:10:29.179 and swooped down upon those aboard like a thunderbolt, 00:10:29.179 --> 00:10:33.179 swinging his sword at their necks right and left. 00:10:33.179 --> 00:10:34.179 They were utterly stunned, 00:10:34.179 --> 00:10:37.179 and began falling in disarray beneath his blows. 00:10:37.179 --> 00:10:39.179 It was not long 00:10:39.179 --> 00:10:42.179 before some of them were killed, 00:10:42.179 --> 00:10:44.179 others drowned, 00:10:44.179 --> 00:10:46.179 and the rest surrendered. 00:10:46.179 --> 00:10:49.379 On the night of al-Qadisiyyah, 00:10:49.379 --> 00:10:51.379 Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas dispatched 00:10:51.379 --> 00:10:53.379 Tulayhah Ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi 00:10:53.379 --> 00:10:55.379 with five of his men, 00:10:55.379 --> 00:10:58.379 and he dispatched 'Amr Ibn Ma'di Karib 00:10:58.379 --> 00:11:00.379 with five others, 00:11:00.379 --> 00:11:03.379 ordering them to infiltrate under the cover of darkness 00:11:03.379 --> 00:11:05.379 into the Persian encampments 00:11:05.379 --> 00:11:07.379 to bring back intelligence about them. 00:11:07.379 --> 00:11:10.379 But no sooner had the two detachments entered the camp 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:13.379 than the hearts of their men were struck with dread, 00:11:13.379 --> 00:11:15.379 overwhelmed by the vast numbers and equipment they saw, 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:18.379 and the vigilance and readiness they encountered. 00:11:18.379 --> 00:11:21.379 So 'Amr Ibn Ma'di Karib and his companions turned back, 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:24.379 and Tulayhah's five men joined them. 00:11:24.379 --> 00:11:26.440 As for Tulayhah himself, 00:11:26.440 --> 00:11:30.440 he pressed on toward his objective, fearless and undaunted, 00:11:30.440 --> 00:11:34.440 spending his night moving throughout the camp. 00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:36.440 When the night began to wane, 00:11:36.440 --> 00:11:39.440 he did not wish to return empty-handed, 00:11:39.440 --> 00:11:42.440 merely carrying the secrets he had discovered, 00:11:42.440 --> 00:11:46.440 but instead made his way to the greatest tent in the encampment. 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:51.440 In front of it stood a steed the likes of which he had never seen, 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:55.440 so he drew his sword, cut the horse's tether, 00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:59.440 mounted it, and dashed off galloping between the tents. 00:11:59.440 --> 00:12:03.539 A Persian horseman gave chase, 00:12:03.539 --> 00:12:07.539 and when he caught up with him, he leveled his spear to strike him, 00:12:07.539 --> 00:12:09.539 but Tulayhah wheeled around against him 00:12:09.539 --> 00:12:12.539 and struck him with a thrust that felled him dead. 00:12:12.539 --> 00:12:15.539 Another horseman rushed at him, 00:12:15.539 --> 00:12:18.539 and Tulayhah did to him just as he had done to his companion. 00:12:18.539 --> 00:12:21.539 Then a third horseman rode out against him, 00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:23.539 and Tulayhah charged at him; 00:12:23.539 --> 00:12:27.539 when the horseman realized he would inevitably be killed, 00:12:27.539 --> 00:12:29.539 he surrendered to him. 00:12:29.539 --> 00:12:32.539 Tulayhah ordered him to run ahead of him, 00:12:32.539 --> 00:12:36.539 and they continued together until they reached the Muslim camp. 00:12:36.539 --> 00:12:39.539 When the Muslims saw them, 00:12:39.539 --> 00:12:42.629 they began proclaiming the oneness and greatness of Allah. 00:12:42.629 --> 00:12:45.629 Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas called for an interpreter 00:12:45.629 --> 00:12:48.629 and questioned the captive about his people and their army. 00:12:48.629 --> 00:12:50.629 The captive said, 00:12:50.629 --> 00:12:54.629 "I wish to tell you about this companion of yours first, 00:12:54.629 --> 00:12:56.629 and then you may ask me whatever you wish." 00:12:56.629 --> 00:12:59.629 They said, "Say what you have to say." 00:12:59.629 --> 00:13:00.629 He said, 00:13:00.629 --> 00:13:03.629 "I have fought in wars and witnessed them, 00:13:03.629 --> 00:13:07.629 and I have seen champions and faced them since I was a boy 00:13:07.629 --> 00:13:09.629 until I reached the age you see now. 00:13:09.629 --> 00:13:12.629 Yet I have never heard of a man who entered an encampment containing 00:13:12.629 --> 00:13:15.629 seventy thousand warriors— 00:13:15.629 --> 00:13:19.629 with each warrior served by five men or more— 00:13:19.629 --> 00:13:22.629 and refused to leave the camp 00:13:22.629 --> 00:13:25.629 until he had raided the commander's pavilion, 00:13:25.629 --> 00:13:27.629 severed the ropes of his tent, 00:13:27.629 --> 00:13:29.629 and seized his horse! 00:13:29.629 --> 00:13:33.629 Then a horseman worth a thousand warriors pursued him, 00:13:33.629 --> 00:13:34.629 but he killed him. 00:13:34.629 --> 00:13:38.629 Another, no less brave, caught up with him, 00:13:38.629 --> 00:13:40.629 and he dispatched him as well. 00:13:40.629 --> 00:13:42.629 Then I caught up with him— 00:13:42.629 --> 00:13:45.629 and I do not think I left behind anyone who equals me— 00:13:45.629 --> 00:13:48.629 intending to avenge them both, 00:13:48.629 --> 00:13:50.629 for they were my cousins; 00:13:50.629 --> 00:13:52.629 but when I saw death before my very eyes, 00:13:52.629 --> 00:13:54.629 I surrendered to him." 00:13:54.629 --> 00:14:00.019 These were not all the heroic deeds of Tulayhah Ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi, 00:14:00.019 --> 00:14:04.019 nor was this the entirety of his striving in the cause of Allah. 00:14:04.019 --> 00:14:08.019 He continued to fight beneath the banners of the Qur'an 00:14:08.019 --> 00:14:13.019 until he fell as a martyr in the Battle of Nahawand. 00:14:13.019 --> 00:14:18.799 Tulayhah Ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi 00:14:18.799 --> 00:14:24.120 was counted by historians as equal to a thousand horsemen.
