Solve this riddle: Who am I?
I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
I am the leader of the Thaqif tribe.
I am one of the notables of the Arabs.
I attained leadership and nobility from a young age.
I am the one intended by the polytheists when they said:
“And they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?” (43:31)
They were referring to me from Ta'if.
And al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah from Makkah.
The Quraysh sent me to negotiate with the Prophet, peace be upon him, at al-Hudaybiyah.
I came to him and spoke with him.
I observed the state of his Companions around him.
I returned to the people of Makkah and said to them:
"I have seen something astonishing from the Companions of Muhammad."
"By Allah, he does not spit out any phlegm,"
"but that it falls into the palm of one of them,"
"who then rubs it onto his face and skin."
"If he commands them, they hasten to fulfill his command."
"And if he performs ablution,"
"they almost fight over the remains of his water."
"And if he speaks,"
"they lower their voices in his presence."
"And they do not stare at him out of reverence for him."
"O people,"
"by Allah, I have visited kings."
"I have visited Caesar, Chosroes, and the Negus."
"By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him,"
"as the Companions of Muhammad revere Muhammad."
"He has offered you a path of guidance,"
"so accept it."
I was with my people in Ta'if when the Prophet, peace be upon him, besieged it.
After the Battle of Hunayn.
When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, departed,
I followed in his tracks.
I caught up with him before he reached Madinah.
I embraced Islam.
I asked him if I could return to my people,
to call them to Islam.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me:
"They will kill you."
I said:
"O Messenger of Allah,"
"I am beloved and obeyed among them,"
"and I am dearer to them than their own eyes."
"Even if they found me sleeping, they would not wake me."
So he gave me permission.
I went out to them, calling them to Islam.
When I reached Ta'if,
I stood upon a high place,
and I called them to Islam.
I openly declared my religion to them.
They shot arrows at me from every direction.
An arrow struck me in a vital spot.
My family carried me to the house,
and they said to me:
"What do you think of your blood?"
I said:
"It is an honor with which Allah has graced me,"
"and martyrdom that Allah has brought to me."
"There is nothing in me but what is in the martyrs who were killed in the cause of Allah,"
"with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
"Before he departs from you,"
"bury me with them."
They used to say that my status among my people
was like the status of the man from Ya-Sin among his people,
who called them to Allah and they killed him.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, mentioned
that he saw 'Isa ibn Maryam, peace be upon him,
and I am the person who resembles him most.
So, who am I?
