Forty hadiths on the virtues of charity. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The likeness of the miser and the charitable person is like two men wearing cloaks of chainmail made of iron. Whenever the charitable person resolves to give charity, it expands over him until it conceals his footsteps, but whenever the miser resolves to give charity, it shrinks upon him, his hands are clamped to his collarbones, and every ring locks tightly against the next." Abu Hurayrah said: "And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'He then struggles to widen it, but he cannot.'" Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
