--> 00:00:56.990 to Makkah al-Mukarramah 00:00:56.990 --> 00:00:58.990 stands a mountain with lush green slopes, 00:00:58.990 --> 00:01:00.990 fresh, glowing peaks, 00:01:00.990 --> 00:01:02.990 and expansive shade, 00:01:02.990 --> 00:01:04.989 called Mount Warqan. 00:01:04.989 --> 00:01:07.250 Living on this mountain 00:01:07.250 --> 00:01:10.250 was a clan from the tribe of Muzaynah. 00:01:10.250 --> 00:01:13.250 In one of the mountain passes of that peak, 00:01:13.250 --> 00:01:15.250 close to Yathrib, 00:01:15.250 --> 00:01:17.250 'Abd al-'Uzza 00:01:17.250 --> 00:01:19.250 ibn 'Abd Nuham al-Muzani was born 00:01:19.250 --> 00:01:21.250 to poor parents. 00:01:21.250 --> 00:01:24.250 His birth occurred shortly 00:01:24.250 --> 00:01:26.250 before the dawn of light in Makkah al-Mukarramah 00:01:26.250 --> 00:01:28.250 by a brief period. 00:01:28.250 --> 00:01:30.250 However, the hand of death 00:01:30.250 --> 00:01:32.250 was quick to snatch away 00:01:32.250 --> 00:01:34.250 the young Muzani boy's father 00:01:34.250 --> 00:01:36.250 before he had even begun to walk, 00:01:36.250 --> 00:01:39.310 leaving him trapped between orphanhood and poverty. 00:01:39.310 --> 00:01:42.310 Yet, the poor orphaned child had 00:01:42.310 --> 00:01:45.310 an uncle who enjoyed a great deal 00:01:45.310 --> 00:01:48.310 of abundant wealth and a comfortable lifestyle. 00:01:48.310 --> 00:01:50.310 This uncle had no 00:01:50.310 --> 00:01:52.310 child to brighten his life 00:01:52.310 --> 00:01:54.310 or offspring to inherit his wealth, 00:01:54.310 --> 00:01:57.310 so he became deeply attached to his young nephew. 00:01:57.310 --> 00:01:59.310 He accorded him, in terms of affection and fortune, 00:01:59.310 --> 00:02:02.469 the status of a son to his father. 00:02:02.469 --> 00:02:05.469 The Muzani youth grew up in the embrace of Mount 00:02:05.469 --> 00:02:08.539 Warqan, delightfully lush and leafy. 00:02:08.539 --> 00:02:10.539 The verdant mountain bestowed upon him 00:02:10.539 --> 00:02:12.539 a portion of its tenderness 00:02:12.539 --> 00:02:15.539 and showered him with its serenity, 00:02:15.539 --> 00:02:18.539 so he grew up deeply sensitive, 00:02:18.539 --> 00:02:21.659 pure of soul, and wholesome of innate nature. 00:02:21.659 --> 00:02:23.659 This served as yet another reason 00:02:23.659 --> 00:02:25.659 for his uncle to become increasingly 00:02:25.659 --> 00:02:28.759 doting upon him and favoring him. 00:02:28.759 --> 00:02:30.759 Although the Muzani youth 00:02:30.759 --> 00:02:32.759 had reached manhood, 00:02:32.759 --> 00:02:35.759 he had not yet heard of the new religion, 00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:37.759 nor had any news reached his knowledge 00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:39.759 regarding its proponent, 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:41.759 Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah, 00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:44.759 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:02:44.759 --> 00:02:46.860 This state of affairs persisted 00:02:46.860 --> 00:02:48.860 until Yathrib was blessed with its 00:02:48.860 --> 00:02:50.860 radiant, auspicious day 00:02:50.860 --> 00:02:52.860 on which the Great Messenger, 00:02:52.860 --> 00:02:54.860 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:02:54.860 --> 00:02:56.860 arrived as an emigrant. 00:02:56.860 --> 00:02:58.860 Thereupon, the Muzani youth began 00:02:58.860 --> 00:03:01.860 diligently following the news of the Noble Messenger, 00:03:01.860 --> 00:03:04.860 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:04.860 --> 00:03:06.860 and actively seeking out details about his affairs. 00:03:06.860 --> 00:03:08.860 He would frequently 00:03:08.860 --> 00:03:10.860 spend the better part of his day 00:03:10.860 --> 00:03:12.860 beside the road leading 00:03:12.860 --> 00:03:14.860 to Al-Madinah, 00:03:14.860 --> 00:03:16.860 asking those traveling to it 00:03:16.860 --> 00:03:18.860 and returning from it, 00:03:18.860 --> 00:03:20.860 inquiring with the eagerness of a seeker about the new religion, 00:03:20.860 --> 00:03:22.860 its supporters, 00:03:22.860 --> 00:03:24.860 and the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:24.860 --> 00:03:26.860 and his news— 00:03:26.860 --> 00:03:29.860 until Allah expanded his pure chest to Islam 00:03:29.860 --> 00:03:31.860 and opened his tender heart 00:03:31.860 --> 00:03:33.860 to the lights of faith. 00:03:33.860 --> 00:03:36.860 Thus, he bore witness that there is no god but Allah 00:03:36.860 --> 00:03:39.860 and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, 00:03:39.860 --> 00:03:41.860 and that was before his eyes 00:03:41.860 --> 00:03:43.860 had been blessed with the sight of the Messenger, 00:03:43.860 --> 00:03:45.860 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:45.860 --> 00:03:47.860 or his ears delighted 00:03:47.860 --> 00:03:49.860 by listening to his speech. 00:03:49.860 --> 00:03:51.860 He was the first person to embrace Islam 00:03:51.860 --> 00:03:55.139 among his people on Mount Warqan. 00:03:55.139 --> 00:03:58.139 The Muzani youth concealed his Islam 00:03:58.139 --> 00:04:00.139 from his people in general, 00:04:00.139 --> 00:04:02.139 and from his uncle in particular, 00:04:02.139 --> 00:04:04.139 and began going out to distant mountain passes 00:04:04.139 --> 00:04:06.139 to worship Allah, Almighty and Glorious, 00:04:06.139 --> 00:04:08.139 in their seclusion, 00:04:08.139 --> 00:04:10.139 far from the eyes of the people. 00:04:10.139 --> 00:04:12.139 He kept waiting 00:04:12.139 --> 00:04:14.139 with eager anticipation for the day 00:04:14.139 --> 00:04:16.139 his uncle would accept Islam, 00:04:16.139 --> 00:04:19.139 so that he could openly declare his own faith 00:04:19.139 --> 00:04:21.139 and travel in his company 00:04:21.139 --> 00:04:24.139 to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:04:24.139 --> 00:04:26.139 especially after his longing 00:04:26.139 --> 00:04:29.139 to meet the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:04:29.139 --> 00:04:31.139 had completely consumed his heart 00:04:31.139 --> 00:04:33.339 and occupied his mind. 00:04:33.339 --> 00:04:35.339 When the young believer realized 00:04:35.339 --> 00:04:37.339 that his patience had been drawn out too long, 00:04:37.339 --> 00:04:40.339 that his uncle remained far from Islam, 00:04:40.339 --> 00:04:43.339 and that the major events alongside the Messenger of Allah, 00:04:43.339 --> 00:04:45.339 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:04:45.339 --> 00:04:48.339 were passing him by one after another, 00:04:48.339 --> 00:04:50.339 he made up his mind, fully aware 00:04:50.339 --> 00:04:53.339 of the consequences of the step he was about to take. 00:04:53.339 --> 00:04:55.339 He approached his uncle and said: 00:04:55.339 --> 00:04:57.339 "O uncle, 00:04:57.339 --> 00:05:00.339 I have waited a long time for you to accept Islam, 00:05:00.339 --> 00:05:02.339 until my patience has worn out. 00:05:02.339 --> 00:05:04.339 If you wish to embrace Islam 00:05:04.339 --> 00:05:06.339 so that Allah decrees happiness for you, 00:05:06.339 --> 00:05:08.339 then how wonderful that would be! 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:10.399 But if it is to be otherwise, 00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:12.399 then permit me to declare 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:14.399 my Islam publicly among the people." 00:05:14.399 --> 00:05:16.560 No sooner had the youth's words 00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:18.560 touched his uncle's ears 00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:21.560 than he flew into a rage and exclaimed: 00:05:21.560 --> 00:05:23.560 "I swear by Allah and Al-'Uzza, 00:05:23.560 --> 00:05:25.560 if you embrace Islam, 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:27.560 I will strip from your hands everything 00:05:27.560 --> 00:05:29.560 I ever gave you, 00:05:29.560 --> 00:05:32.560 hand you over to absolute poverty, 00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:36.560 and leave you a prey to destitute want and hunger!" 00:05:36.560 --> 00:05:38.560 Yet this threat did not stir 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:40.560 any fear in the young believer, 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:43.560 nor did it weaken his resolve in the slightest. 00:05:43.560 --> 00:05:46.560 His uncle then enlisted his people against him, 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:49.560 and they rushed to intimidate him and entice him, 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:53.560 threatening and warning him. 00:05:53.560 --> 00:05:55.560 But he would say to them: 00:05:55.560 --> 00:05:57.560 "Do whatever you wish! 00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:00.560 By Allah, I am following Muhammad 00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:03.560 and abandoning the worship of stones, 00:06:03.560 --> 00:06:07.560 turning instead to the worship of the One, the Subduer! 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:11.560 So let happen whatever may come from you and my uncle!" 00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:13.560 Thereupon, his uncle did nothing less 00:06:13.560 --> 00:06:16.560 than strip him of everything he had given him, 00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:18.560 cut off his financial support, 00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:20.560 deprived him of any assistance, 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:24.589 and left him with nothing but a single coarse garment (*bijad*) to cover his body. 00:06:24.589 --> 00:06:27.939 So the Muzani youth set out, emigrating 00:06:27.939 --> 00:06:30.939 with his religion to Allah and His Messenger, 00:06:30.939 --> 00:06:32.939 leaving behind the abodes 00:06:32.939 --> 00:06:34.939 of childhood and the haunts of youth, 00:06:34.939 --> 00:06:37.939 turning away from the wealth and comfort 00:06:37.939 --> 00:06:39.939 in his uncle's hands, 00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:41.939 desiring only the reward and recompense 00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:43.939 that lie with Allah. 00:06:43.939 --> 00:06:46.939 He began quickening his steps toward Al-Madinah, 00:06:46.939 --> 00:06:48.939 driven by a longing 00:06:48.939 --> 00:06:51.939 that tore at his very heartstrings throughout the night. 00:06:51.939 --> 00:06:55.139 When he drew near to Yathrib, 00:06:55.139 --> 00:06:58.139 he tore his coarse garment into two halves: 00:06:58.139 --> 00:07:00.139 he used one half as a waist-wrapper 00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:02.170 and draped the other over his upper body as a cloak. 00:07:02.170 --> 00:07:04.170 Then he proceeded to the Mosque of the Messenger, 00:07:04.170 --> 00:07:06.170 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:06.170 --> 00:07:09.170 and spent that night there. 00:07:09.170 --> 00:07:11.459 When dawn broke, 00:07:11.459 --> 00:07:14.459 he stood near the door of the Prophet's room, 00:07:14.459 --> 00:07:16.459 peace and blessings be upon him, 00:07:16.459 --> 00:07:19.459 waiting with eager anticipation 00:07:19.459 --> 00:07:21.459 for the appearance of the Great Messenger, 00:07:21.459 --> 00:07:23.459 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:23.459 --> 00:07:24.459 from his chamber. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:27.490 The moment his eyes fell upon him, 00:07:27.490 --> 00:07:29.490 tears of joy began streaming 00:07:29.490 --> 00:07:31.490 down his cheeks, 00:07:31.490 --> 00:07:33.490 and he felt as though his heart wanted 00:07:33.490 --> 00:07:35.490 to leap from between his ribs 00:07:35.490 --> 00:07:38.490 to greet him and bid him peace. 00:07:38.490 --> 00:07:40.709 When the prayer was completed, 00:07:40.709 --> 00:07:42.709 the Noble Prophet, 00:07:42.709 --> 00:07:44.709 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:07:45.709 --> 00:07:48.709 stood up and scanned the faces of the people. 00:07:48.709 --> 00:07:50.709 He looked at the Muzani youth 00:07:50.709 --> 00:07:53.709 and asked: "Where are you from, young man?" 00:07:53.709 --> 00:07:55.779 So he stated his lineage to him. 00:07:55.779 --> 00:07:57.779 The Prophet then asked him: "What is your name?" 00:07:57.779 --> 00:07:59.779 He replied: "'Abd al-'Uzza." 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:02.779 The Prophet said to him: "Rather, you are 'Abdullah." 00:08:02.779 --> 00:08:05.899 Then he drew close to him and said: 00:08:05.899 --> 00:08:07.899 "Stay near us 00:08:07.899 --> 00:08:10.899 and be among our guests." 00:08:10.899 --> 00:08:12.899 From that day on, people 00:08:12.899 --> 00:08:14.899 called him 'Abdullah, 00:08:14.899 --> 00:08:16.899 and the noble Companions gave him the honorific title 00:08:16.899 --> 00:08:18.899 *Dhu al-Bijadayn* (The One of the Two Coarse Garments) 00:08:18.899 --> 00:08:20.899 after they saw his two-piece garment 00:08:20.899 --> 00:08:22.899 and learned his story. 00:08:22.899 --> 00:08:25.160 Thus, he became known in history 00:08:25.160 --> 00:08:27.160 He was the one most frequently known by this title. 00:08:27.160 --> 00:08:30.290 Do not ask, dear listener, 00:08:30.290 --> 00:08:32.289 about the immense bliss of Dhu al-Bijadayn 00:08:32.289 --> 00:08:34.289 when he came to live 00:08:34.289 --> 00:08:36.289 under the care of the Messenger of Allah, 00:08:36.289 --> 00:08:38.289 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:38.289 --> 00:08:40.289 attending his gatherings, 00:08:40.289 --> 00:08:42.289 praying behind him, 00:08:42.289 --> 00:08:44.289 drinking deeply from his guidance, 00:08:44.289 --> 00:08:46.289 and filling his heart with his noble characteristics. 00:08:46.289 --> 00:08:48.379 The worldly life had summoned him, 00:08:48.379 --> 00:08:50.379 yet he turned a deaf ear 00:08:50.379 --> 00:08:52.379 to its enticing calls, 00:08:52.379 --> 00:08:54.379 turning wholeheartedly toward the Hereafter, 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:56.379 seeking it by every possible path. 00:08:56.379 --> 00:08:58.419 He sought it through supplication, 00:08:58.419 --> 00:09:00.419 crying out to Allah 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:02.419 in deep fear and humble devotion, 00:09:02.419 --> 00:09:05.419 until the Companions dubbed him "the tender-hearted, frequent suppliant." 00:09:05.419 --> 00:09:07.419 He sought it through the Qur'an, 00:09:07.419 --> 00:09:09.419 constantly filling and perfuming 00:09:09.419 --> 00:09:11.419 with the fragrance of its verses— 00:09:11.419 --> 00:09:13.419 the clear, manifest proofs— 00:09:13.419 --> 00:09:15.419 the corners of the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah, 00:09:15.419 --> 00:09:17.419 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:09:17.419 --> 00:09:19.419 He sought it through jihad, 00:09:19.419 --> 00:09:21.419 never missing a single 00:09:21.419 --> 00:09:23.419 military expedition undertaken by the Messenger of Allah, 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:25.419 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:09:25.419 --> 00:09:27.509 During the Expedition of Tabuk, 00:09:27.509 --> 00:09:29.509 Dhu al-Bijadayn asked 00:09:29.509 --> 00:09:31.509 the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah 00:09:31.509 --> 00:09:33.509 be upon him, to pray for him 00:09:33.509 --> 00:09:35.539 to attain martyrdom. 00:09:35.539 --> 00:09:37.539 But the Prophet prayed that Allah preserve his blood 00:09:37.539 --> 00:09:39.610 from the swords of the disbelievers. 00:09:39.610 --> 00:09:41.610 He said to him, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, 00:09:41.610 --> 00:09:43.610 O Messenger of Allah! 00:09:43.610 --> 00:09:45.610 This is not what I intended!" 00:09:45.610 --> 00:09:47.610 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied to him, 00:09:47.610 --> 00:09:49.610 "If you set out to fight 00:09:49.610 --> 00:09:51.610 in the cause of Allah, 00:09:51.610 --> 00:09:53.610 and you fall ill and die, 00:09:53.610 --> 00:09:55.610 then you are a martyr! 00:09:55.610 --> 00:09:57.610 And if your mount throws you 00:09:57.610 --> 00:09:59.610 and you fall and are killed, 00:09:59.610 --> 00:10:01.769 then you are a martyr!" 00:10:01.769 --> 00:10:03.769 No more than a day and a night 00:10:03.769 --> 00:10:05.769 had passed after this conversation 00:10:05.769 --> 00:10:07.769 before the young man from the Muzaynah tribe 00:10:07.769 --> 00:10:10.019 fell sick and passed away. 00:10:10.019 --> 00:10:12.019 He died as an emigrant for the sake of Allah, 00:10:12.019 --> 00:10:14.019 a striver in the cause of Allah, 00:10:14.019 --> 00:10:16.019 far away from family 00:10:16.019 --> 00:10:18.019 and kinsmen, 00:10:18.019 --> 00:10:20.059 a stranger to his homeland and his home. 00:10:20.059 --> 00:10:22.059 Yet Allah compensated him for all of that 00:10:22.059 --> 00:10:24.179 with the finest of rewards. 00:10:24.179 --> 00:10:26.179 For the noble Companions 00:10:26.179 --> 00:10:28.179 dug his grave with their own pure hands, 00:10:28.179 --> 00:10:30.179 arms working together, 00:10:30.179 --> 00:10:32.179 and the noble Messenger, 00:10:32.179 --> 00:10:34.179 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:10:34.179 --> 00:10:36.179 personally descended into his grave and prepared it 00:10:36.179 --> 00:10:38.179 with his own blessed hands. 00:10:38.179 --> 00:10:40.179 Lowering him down into the grave 00:10:40.179 --> 00:10:42.179 were the two venerable leaders, Abu Bakr 00:10:42.179 --> 00:10:44.220 and 'Umar, to whom 00:10:44.220 --> 00:10:46.220 the Messenger, peace and blessings 00:10:46.220 --> 00:10:48.220 of Allah be upon him, said, 00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:50.220 "Bring your brother close to me, 00:10:50.220 --> 00:10:52.220 and lower him down to me." 00:10:52.220 --> 00:10:54.220 So he received him from their hands 00:10:54.220 --> 00:10:56.220 and settled him gently in his niche. 00:10:56.220 --> 00:10:58.379 'Abdullah 00:10:58.379 --> 00:11:00.379 Ibn Mas'ud was standing by, witnessing 00:11:00.379 --> 00:11:02.379 all of this, 00:11:02.379 --> 00:11:04.379 and he said, "How I wish 00:11:04.379 --> 00:11:06.379 I were the dweller of this grave! 00:11:06.379 --> 00:11:08.379 By Allah, I wished that I had been in his place, 00:11:08.379 --> 00:11:10.379 even though I had embraced Islam 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:12.379 fifteen years before him." 00:11:12.379 --> 00:11:18.090 The worldly life had indeed summoned 00:11:18.090 --> 00:11:20.309 Dhu al-Bijadayn, 00:11:20.309 --> 00:11:22.309 yet he turned a deaf ear to 00:11:22.309 --> 00:11:24.440 its call, 00:11:24.440 --> 00:11:26.440 and turned wholeheartedly toward the Hereafter, seeking it 00:11:26.440 -->
