A new challenge: Who am I?
I am a Companion from the Juhaynah tribe.
I was an ally of the Ansar.
I embraced Islam early on.
I witnessed the Second Pledge of al-Aqabah.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to send me on special missions.
And I would carry them out.
I am the heroic revolutionary.
And the man of difficult tasks.
I participated in the expedition of Abdullah Ibn Unays, may Allah be pleased with him.
To kill Ibn Abi al-Huqayq in Khaybar.
And I single-handedly killed the most dangerous man to the Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula.
For the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, called me one day and said:
"It has reached me that Khalid Ibn Sufyan al-Hudhali is gathering people to attack me."
"He is at Nakhlah, near Medina."
"So go to him and kill him."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,"
"Describe him to me so that I may recognize him."
He said,
"The sign between you and him,"
"Is that when you see him, you will feel a shudder in your body."
I said,
"O Messenger of Allah,"
"I do not fear anyone."
He replied,
"Indeed,"
"You will feel a shudder when you meet him."
"And you will be reminded of the Shaytan."
So I set out toward Khalid al-Hudhali,
With my sword girded,
Until I reached him at the time of Asr.
When I saw him,
I felt the very shudder the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had described to me.
I said,
"The Messenger of Allah spoke the truth."
I approached him,
And I feared that if a fight broke out between us,
It would distract me from the prayer.
So I prayed while walking toward him,
Signaling with my head.
When I reached him,
He said,
"Who is this man?"
I said,
"A man from the Arabs,"
"Who heard about you and your gathering against this man in Yathrib,"
"And I have come to join you."
He said,
"Yes, that is what we are doing."
So I walked with him,
Until I had the opportunity,
I struck him with my sword and killed him.
I left his women weeping over him,
And I hurried back to Medina.
When his companions saw that he had been killed,
They scattered in his wake.
When I arrived before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
He said,
"The face has succeeded."
I said,
"I have killed him, O Messenger of Allah."
He said,
"You have spoken the truth."
Then he stood up with me and entered his house,
And gave me a staff.
He said,
"Keep this with you."
I went out to the people with it,
And they asked,
"What is this staff?"
I said,
"The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gave it to me,"
"And commanded me to keep it with me."
They said,
"Will you not go back and ask him why?"
So I returned and asked him,
And I said,
"Why did you give me this staff, O Messenger of Allah?"
He said,
"It is,"
"A sign between me and you,"
"So that I may recognize you by it on the Day of Resurrection."
"For those who have a staff on that day will be few."
Meaning,
That few people will have righteous deeds,
To lean upon on the Day of Resurrection,
Just as a person leans upon his staff.
So this staff became my most precious possession.
I tied it to my sword,
And it never left my side.
When death approached me,
I gave instructions regarding it,
So it was placed in my shroud,
And buried with me.
