Stop.
And learn about the Companions, the scholars, and those of the highest standing.
My grandfather challenges me: "Who am I?"
I am one of the young men among the Ansar from the Companions.
I embraced Islam while I was still a young boy.
My father passed away, and so I grew up as an orphan.
Then my stepfather, Julas Ibn Suwayd, took me under his guardianship.
He was truly an excellent man.
He cared for me and loved me just as he loved his own son.
And I, too, loved him just as a child loves his father.
Because of the immense kindness I witnessed from him toward me.
Until that day arrived, which I had never expected.
I did not witness the military expeditions with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, due to my young age.
Yet, I used to see the Muslims preparing themselves for the expedition of Tabuk.
And they are making preparations for a long journey.
I used to observe al-Jullas showing reluctance to join the mobilization for battle.
And even more remarkable than that is...
And one day, she entered upon him.
Then I heard him say
If Muhammad, peace be upon him, is truthful in what he says
For we are worse than donkeys.
I was struck with awe by what he said.
And she became intensely angry.
I quickly responded to him, saying
By Allah, O Jullas.
You are indeed among the people most beloved to me.
And in my view, he is the most generous of them.
I have just made a statement.
If I were to disclose it on your behalf, it would cause you harm.
Even if he remained silent about it.
I have betrayed my religion and ruined my own soul.
Indeed, the obligations of the religion are the most deserving of fulfillment.
And I shall convey to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, what I have said.
I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
And I informed him of what al-Jullas had said.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then sent for him.
And he requested his presence.
Then al-Jullas was present.
I swear by Allah that he did not say those words.
And he accused me of lying.
Consequently, people began to look at me with suspicion.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, fell silent.
As for me,
My face became flushed with blood.
My eyes welled up with tears.
At that point, al-Jullas said:
What I have mentioned to you, O Messenger of Allah, is the truth.
And if you wish, we shall form an alliance in your presence.
And I swear by Allah
I did not say anything of what the boy is accusing me of.
It was then that the revelation descended upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Everyone fell silent.
Then, when the state of revelation subsided from him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
He recited the words of Allah, the Exalted:
“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)
“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)
And they disbelieved after having accepted Islam.
And they harbored resentment for what they could not attain.
“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)
If they repent, it will be better for them.
And should they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment.
In this world and the Hereafter.
“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)
The face of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, beamed with joy.
He reached out his hand toward my ears and said
Listen closely, young man, to what you have heard.
And your Lord has spoken the truth.
As for al-Jalas, he began to tremble after he heard the words of Allah the Exalted:
And he said
Rather, I repent, O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
Rather, I repent.
He embraced Islam at that time, and his commitment to the faith was sincere.
And he returned to loving and honoring me, just as he had been before, and even more so.
And he used to say to me
All praise is due to Allah, who saved me from the Fire through you.
So, who am I?
