A new challenge: Who am I?
I am among the noble leaders and chieftains of the Ansar.
I was the representative of my tribe, Banu al-Najjar, at the Pledge of al-'Aqabah.
I met the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Makkah
a year before the First Pledge of al-'Aqabah,
along with five individuals from the Khazraj,
and we believed in him.
When we arrived in Madinah,
we called our people to Islam
and to follow the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
The following year,
twelve of us set out as Muslims,
and we swore allegiance to the Prophet, peace be upon him, during the pilgrimage season.
Then we departed,
and that was the First Pledge of al-'Aqabah.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent with us
Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him,
to recite the Qur'an to us and instruct us in the religion.
Then we returned to him the following year,
seventy men strong, to give him our pledge at the Second Pledge of al-'Aqabah.
I wished to secure a solemn commitment from my people and fortify their resolve,
so I stood up and took the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, by his hand,
and said: "Hold on, O people of Yathrib!
We did not strike the bellies of our camels to reach him
except knowing full well that he is the Messenger of Allah.
Taking him away with us today means severing ties with all the Arabs,
the slaying of your best men, and being bitten by swords.
So if you are a people who will endure that with patience,
your reward rests with Allah.
But if you fear treachery within yourselves,
then leave him now, for that would be more excusable for you before Allah."
They said: "Remove your hand from us!
By Allah, we will never abandon this pledge,
nor will we ever seek to be released from it!"
So we stood up and gave him our oath of allegiance.
He took our covenant and laid down his conditions,
promising us Paradise in return.
I was the first to gather the people for the Friday prayer in Madinah,
and I used to lead them in the five daily prayers every day as well,
in a mosque I built for the Muslims.
In the first year after the Hijrah,
I fell ill
and was treated by cauterization,
but the illness worsened,
until death reached me and my soul departed—
and that was before the Battle of Badr.
Then my tribe, Banu al-Najjar, came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
and said:
"Our representative has passed away,
so appoint a leader over us, O Messenger of Allah."
He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied:
"I am your representative."
My tribe used to boast about that honor.
