Forty hadiths on the virtue of charity.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"It would not please me to have gold equal to Mount Uhud,
such that three days pass over me,
while I still have a dinar of it remaining,
except for a dinar I set aside to pay off a debt."
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
Giving and charity were the most beloved things to him, peace be upon him.
His joy and happiness in what he gave
were greater than the joy of the one receiving it.
He was the most generous of people in doing good,
his hand like a wind sent forth.
Whenever a person in need came to him,
he would prioritize them over his own self,
sometimes with his food,
and sometimes with his clothing.
He, peace be upon him,
would command charity and encourage it,
and call people to it through his own conduct and his speech.
For that reason, he, peace be upon him,
was the most expansive of all creation in breast,
the most pleasant of them in soul,
and the most blissful of them in heart.
For charity and the performance of good deeds
have a wondrous effect in expanding the breast.
