In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
A Summary of the Prophetic biography.
The conversion of Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him.
Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib embraced Islam during this period.
In the sixth year of the Prophetic mission.
It is also said it was in the second year of the Prophetic mission.
Al-Hakim narrated in al-Mustadrak with a weak chain of transmission.
On the authority of Ibn Ishaq, who said:
A man from the tribe of Aslam, who was a reliable witness, told me:
That Abu Jahl confronted the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, at al-Safa.
He harmed him and insulted him.
He spoke to him in a way that was hateful, disparaging his religion and belittling him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did not speak to him.
A female servant of 'Abd Allah ibn Jud'an al-Taymi,
who was in a dwelling of hers above al-Safa, heard this.
Then he (Abu Jahl) turned away from him.
He went to the gathering place of Quraysh by the Ka'bah and sat with them.
It was not long before Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib arrived, carrying his bow,
returning from a hunt.
Whenever he did that,
he would never pass by the gathering of Quraysh without stopping, greeting them, and speaking with them.
He was the most honored of Quraysh and the most formidable in character.
At that time, he was still a polytheist, following the religion of his people.
The servant girl came to him just as the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had risen to return to his home.
She said to him:
"O Abu 'Umarah,
if only you had seen what your nephew Muhammad endured from Abu al-Hakam just now.
He found him here,
harmed him, insulted him, and said things that were hateful.
Then he turned away from him,
and Muhammad did not speak to him."
Hamza was overcome with anger,
for Allah intended to honor him.
He went out quickly, not stopping for anyone as he usually did,
intending to circumambulate the House,
but determined to confront Abu Jahl.
When he entered the Mosque, he saw him sitting among the people.
He approached him until he stood over him,
raised his bow, and struck him on the head with a forceful blow.
Men from Quraysh, from the tribe of Banu Makhzum, rose to Hamza to support Abu Jahl.
They said, "We see nothing, O Hamza, but that you have apostatized."
Hamza replied,
"And what would stop me, when it has become clear to me what he is?
I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah,
and that what he says is the truth.
By Allah, I will not recant.
Stop me if you are truthful!"
Abu Jahl said,
"Leave Abu 'Umarah alone,
for I have indeed insulted his nephew with a vile insult."
Hamza remained firm in his Islam,
and followed the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
When Hamza embraced Islam,
Quraysh knew that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had become strong and protected,
and that Hamza would defend him.
So they refrained from some of the things they used to do to him and the ways they used to treat him.
Then Hamza, may Allah be pleased with him, returned to his home.
Satan came to him and said,
"You are the leader of Quraysh;
have you followed this apostate
and abandoned the religion of your forefathers?
Death would be better for you than what you have done."
Hamza turned to his inner turmoil and said,
"What have I done?
O Allah, if this is guidance,
then place its confirmation in my heart;
but if it is otherwise, then grant me a way out of what I have fallen into."
He spent a night such as he had never spent before, due to the whisperings of Satan, until morning.
He went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and said,
"O nephew,
I have fallen into a matter from which I see no way out.
It is a heavy burden for someone like me to stand upon something I do not know:
is it guidance or is it a deep error?
So speak to me,
for I have longed, O nephew, for you to speak to me."
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, turned to him,
reminded him, exhorted him, warned him, and gave him glad tidings.
Allah cast faith into his heart,
just as the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had said.
He said,
"I bear witness that you are indeed truthful, with the testimony of one who is certain and knowledgeable.
So manifest your religion, O nephew,
for by Allah, I would not love to possess everything the sky overshadows
while remaining upon my former religion."
He said:
Thus, Hamza was among those through whom Allah strengthened the religion.
The longing of the worlds for one another is immense,
and the longing for you has no limit.
May Allah send blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,
and as long as the heart moves with the remembrance,
healing it.
