00:00:55.969 --> 00:00:58.969 beginning with tribal zeal and heroism, 00:00:58.969 --> 00:01:02.289 and ending with faith and true manhood. 00:01:02.289 --> 00:01:04.290 Khalid was from the Banu Makhzum, 00:01:04.290 --> 00:01:07.290 and the Makhzum were at the pinnacle of the Quraysh. 00:01:07.290 --> 00:01:11.290 He was raised in one of their most ancient houses by lineage, 00:01:11.290 --> 00:01:13.290 most noble by status, 00:01:13.290 --> 00:01:15.290 and wealthiest in property and assets. 00:01:15.290 --> 00:01:20.290 His uncle, Hisham, was the commander of the Banu Makhzum on the day of the Fijar War, 00:01:20.290 --> 00:01:25.290 and upon his death, the Arabs dated events by it, just as they dated other momentous occurrences. 00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:30.290 The Quraysh did not hold a market in Makkah for three years out of grief for him. 00:01:30.290 --> 00:01:33.290 His uncle, al-Fakih ibn al-Mughirah, 00:01:33.290 --> 00:01:35.290 was one of the most generous Arabs of his time. 00:01:35.290 --> 00:01:38.290 He possessed a house of hospitality 00:01:38.290 --> 00:01:41.290 where anyone he wished could find shelter without needing permission. 00:01:41.290 --> 00:01:44.290 As for his father, al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, 00:01:44.290 --> 00:01:47.290 he was the wealthiest man of his era, 00:01:47.290 --> 00:01:49.290 possessing gold and silver, 00:01:49.290 --> 00:01:52.290 orchards, vineyards, and trade, 00:01:52.290 --> 00:01:55.290 as well as servants, handmaidens, and slaves, 00:01:55.290 --> 00:01:58.290 in quantities no one else possessed. 00:01:58.290 --> 00:02:02.290 His father used to drape the Ka'bah alone for one year, 00:02:02.290 --> 00:02:05.290 and the entire Quraysh would drape it the next. 00:02:05.290 --> 00:02:08.289 For this reason, he was called "the Unique" (al-Wahid), 00:02:08.289 --> 00:02:11.289 and nicknamed "the Basil of Quraysh." 00:02:11.289 --> 00:02:14.289 He is the one about whom the Holy Qur'an says: 00:02:14.289 --> 00:02:18.289 “Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,” (74:11) 00:02:18.289 --> 00:02:23.289 “And then bestowed upon him ample means,” (74:12) 00:02:23.289 --> 00:02:26.289 "And children present [with him]," 00:02:26.289 --> 00:02:30.289 "And I spread [everything] before him, easing [his way]." 00:02:30.289 --> 00:02:33.289 Because of his extreme generosity, his father 00:02:33.289 --> 00:02:36.289 would disdain having any fire lit in Mina other than his own, 00:02:36.289 --> 00:02:39.289 for the sake of feeding the pilgrims. 00:02:39.289 --> 00:02:42.289 He used to claim that he was the most deserving of people 00:02:42.289 --> 00:02:45.289 to receive prophethood and for the Qur'an to be revealed to him. 00:02:45.289 --> 00:02:48.289 Regarding this, Allah the Almighty says: 00:02:48.289 --> 00:02:52.289 “And they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?” (43:31) 00:02:52.289 --> 00:02:58.289 “And they say: If only this Qur'an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns?” (43:31) 00:02:59.289 --> 00:03:02.289 In this noble, wealthy, and prominent house, 00:03:02.289 --> 00:03:05.289 Khalid ibn al-Walid was born 00:03:05.289 --> 00:03:08.289 thirty-four years before the Hijrah. 00:03:08.289 --> 00:03:11.289 Khalid was tall, remarkably so, 00:03:11.289 --> 00:03:14.289 of long stature and a grand presence. 00:03:14.289 --> 00:03:17.289 He had an imposing appearance and a fair complexion. 00:03:17.289 --> 00:03:20.289 He bore a striking resemblance to Umar ibn al-Khattab, 00:03:20.289 --> 00:03:23.289 so much so that those with poor eyesight 00:03:23.289 --> 00:03:26.319 would often confuse the two men. 00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:29.319 When the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:03:29.319 --> 00:03:33.319 declared his call, Khalid was a young man. 00:03:33.319 --> 00:03:36.319 He turned away from it because he saw in it 00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:39.319 a new leadership that challenged the leadership 00:03:39.319 --> 00:03:42.319 of his family and a nascent sovereignty 00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:45.319 that stood in the face of his father's authority. 00:03:45.319 --> 00:03:48.319 Thus, he and his brother, 'Amarah ibn al-Walid, opposed it. 00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:51.319 As for 'Amarah, he fought at Badr 00:03:51.319 --> 00:03:54.319 with the polytheists and fell into the captivity of the Muslims. 00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:57.319 There was much discussion regarding his ransom 00:03:57.319 --> 00:04:00.319 due to his immense wealth and the intense enmity 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:03.319 of his family toward Islam. 00:04:03.319 --> 00:04:06.349 His captor demanded four thousand dirhams, 00:04:06.349 --> 00:04:09.349 but the Prophet, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, instructed 00:04:09.349 --> 00:04:12.349 that no ransom be accepted for him other than the coat of mail 00:04:12.349 --> 00:04:15.349 of his father, his sword, 00:04:15.349 --> 00:04:18.350 and his helmet—the "baydah" being the helmet 00:04:18.350 --> 00:04:21.350 made of iron. 00:04:22.350 --> 00:04:25.350 The man remained in his faith while in the captivity of the Muslims. 00:04:25.350 --> 00:04:28.350 When his ransom was paid and he went to his family, 00:04:28.350 --> 00:04:31.350 he announced his Islam among them, 00:04:31.350 --> 00:04:34.350 despite them and against their will. 00:04:34.350 --> 00:04:37.350 The polytheists were astonished by his action 00:04:37.350 --> 00:04:40.350 and asked him, "Why did you not embrace Islam before you were ransomed?" 00:04:40.350 --> 00:04:43.350 He replied, "I hated for it to be said 00:04:43.350 --> 00:04:46.420 that I panicked because of captivity." 00:04:46.420 --> 00:04:49.420 As for Khalid, he remained as he was. 00:04:49.420 --> 00:04:52.420 At the Battle of Uhud, the Quraysh gave him 00:04:52.420 --> 00:04:55.420 the standard of the right flank. 00:04:55.420 --> 00:04:58.420 He personally led the attack that tipped 00:04:58.420 --> 00:05:01.420 the scales in favor of the polytheists against the Muslims. 00:05:01.420 --> 00:05:04.420 He charged with the cavalry against the Muslim army, 00:05:04.420 --> 00:05:07.420 causing their ranks to falter and become intermingled, 00:05:07.420 --> 00:05:10.420 until they could no longer distinguish 00:05:10.420 --> 00:05:13.420 between their own and their enemy. 00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:16.420 Abu Sufyan was overcome with joy and said, 00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:19.420 "A day for a day, as at Badr, and the fortunes of war alternate." 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:22.540 On the day of the Trench (al-Khandaq), 00:05:22.540 --> 00:05:25.540 the polytheists divided their battalions, 00:05:25.540 --> 00:05:28.540 assigning each battalion to a group of Muslims 00:05:28.540 --> 00:05:31.540 to strike them in the morning. 00:05:31.540 --> 00:05:34.540 Khalid ibn al-Walid was the one tasked 00:05:34.540 --> 00:05:37.579 with [watching] the Messenger of Allah, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. 00:05:37.579 --> 00:05:40.579 Khalid nearly captured the noble Messenger, 00:05:40.579 --> 00:05:43.579 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:05:44.579 --> 00:05:47.579 Their commander was Usayd ibn al-Hudayr, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:05:47.579 --> 00:05:50.670 In the year of al-Hudaybiyah, 00:05:50.670 --> 00:05:53.670 the Messenger, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, 00:05:53.670 --> 00:05:56.670 went out to Makkah to perform 'Umrah 00:05:56.670 --> 00:05:59.670 with about 1,500 Muslims, 00:05:59.670 --> 00:06:02.670 carrying no weapons other than swords 00:06:02.670 --> 00:06:05.699 in their sheaths. 00:06:05.699 --> 00:06:08.699 The polytheists felt fear because of this, 00:06:08.699 --> 00:06:11.699 and they dispatched Khalid to meet the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:06:11.699 --> 00:06:14.699 with two hundred horsemen 00:06:14.699 --> 00:06:17.699 to scout his intentions. 00:06:17.699 --> 00:06:20.699 Khalid drew near until he saw the Messenger, peace be upon him. 00:06:20.699 --> 00:06:23.699 Then the time for the Dhuhr prayer arrived, 00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:26.699 and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:06:26.699 --> 00:06:29.699 led his Companions in the Prayer of Fear (Salat al-Khawf). 00:06:29.699 --> 00:06:32.699 Khalid intended to launch a surprise attack on the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:06:32.699 --> 00:06:35.699 but the tranquility of the Muslims held him back, 00:06:35.699 --> 00:06:38.699 as did the awe of the prayer, 00:06:38.699 --> 00:06:41.699 and the chivalry of a knight that refuses treachery. 00:06:41.699 --> 00:06:44.699 It occurred to him that Muhammad had a secret, 00:06:44.699 --> 00:06:47.699 and that the man was under divine protection. 00:06:47.699 --> 00:06:50.699 This was the first sentiment 00:06:50.699 --> 00:06:53.740 that inclined him toward Islam. 00:06:53.740 --> 00:06:56.740 Then he received a letter from his brother, al-Walid, 00:06:56.740 --> 00:06:59.740 who had embraced Islam after Badr, 00:06:59.740 --> 00:07:02.740 containing words from the noble Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:07:02.740 --> 00:07:05.740 which became the reason for Allah to bring him 00:07:05.740 --> 00:07:08.740 out of darkness into the light. 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:11.740 Let us leave it to Khalid himself to tell us 00:07:11.740 --> 00:07:14.740 the story of his conversion. 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:17.740 He said: "When Allah desired good for me, 00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:20.740 He cast the love of Islam into my heart. 00:07:20.740 --> 00:07:23.740 My reason returned to me, and I said, 00:07:23.740 --> 00:07:26.740 'I have witnessed all these battlefields against Muhammad, 00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:29.740 and every time I left a battlefield, 00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:32.740 I found myself upon nothing.'" 00:07:33.740 --> 00:07:36.740 Then he continues, saying: 00:07:36.740 --> 00:07:39.740 "While I was in that state, 00:07:39.740 --> 00:07:42.740 my brother wrote me a letter: 00:07:42.740 --> 00:07:45.740 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:48.740 To proceed: 00:07:48.740 --> 00:07:51.740 I have seen nothing more strange than your turning away from Islam, 00:07:51.740 --> 00:07:54.740 given your intellect—your intellect! 00:07:54.740 --> 00:07:57.740 A matter like Islam is not unknown to anyone. 00:07:57.740 --> 00:08:00.740 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, asked me about you, 00:08:00.740 --> 00:08:03.740 saying, 'Where is Khalid?' 00:08:03.740 --> 00:08:06.740 I replied, 'Allah will bring him.' 00:08:06.740 --> 00:08:09.740 He said, 'A man like Khalid cannot be ignorant of Islam. 00:08:09.740 --> 00:08:12.740 If he had used his strength with the Muslims 00:08:12.740 --> 00:08:15.740 against the polytheists, it would have been better for him.' 00:08:15.740 --> 00:08:18.769 We would have prioritized him over others. 00:08:18.769 --> 00:08:21.769 So, my brother, make up for what you have missed, 00:08:21.769 --> 00:08:24.959 for you have missed many virtuous opportunities.'" 00:08:24.959 --> 00:08:27.959 Then Khalid continued, saying: 00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:31.959 "I became eager to set out for Madinah, 00:08:31.959 --> 00:08:34.960 and the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, pleased me. 00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:37.960 I saw in a dream 00:08:37.960 --> 00:08:40.960 as if I were in a narrow, barren land, 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:43.960 then I went out to a green, vast land. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:46.960 I said, 'This dream is true.' 00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:49.960 When I resolved to set out 00:08:49.960 --> 00:08:52.960 to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:08:52.960 --> 00:08:55.960 I said, 'Who shall I take with me to Muhammad?' 00:08:55.960 --> 00:08:58.960 I met Safwan ibn Umayyah 00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:01.960 and said, 'Do you not see, O Abu Wahb, 00:09:01.960 --> 00:09:04.960 the situation we are in? Muhammad has prevailed 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.960 over the Arabs and non-Arabs. If we went 00:09:07.960 --> 00:09:10.960 to him and followed him, for the honor of 00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:13.960 Muhammad is our honor.' But he refused 00:09:13.960 --> 00:09:16.960 me with the strongest refusal and said, 00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:19.960 'If no one remained of the Quraysh but me, I would never follow him.' 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:22.960 So we parted ways. 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:25.960 He was a man seeking vengeance, 00:09:25.960 --> 00:09:28.960 for his father and brother were killed at Badr." 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:31.960 Then Khalid continued the story of his conversion and said: 00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:34.960 "I left Safwan ibn Umayyah 00:09:34.960 --> 00:09:37.960 and met 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl. 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:40.960 I said to him what I had said to Safwan, 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:43.960 and he said to me what Safwan had said. 00:09:43.960 --> 00:09:46.960 I said to him, 'Keep what I have mentioned to you to yourself.' 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:49.960 I went to my house, 00:09:49.960 --> 00:09:52.960 and told my mount to be prepared, until 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:55.960 I met 'Uthman ibn Abi Talhah, 00:09:55.960 --> 00:09:58.960 who is a friend of mine, to mention to him what I intended. 00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:01.960 Then I remembered those of his ancestors who were killed, 00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:04.960 and I disliked that. Then I said, 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:07.960 'What does it matter if I meet him while I am departing?' 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:10.960 So I mentioned to him what had happened, 00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:13.960 and I said to him something 00:10:13.960 --> 00:10:16.960 similar to what I had said to the others. He hastened, 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:18.960 and we traveled by night, reaching the dawn, 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:21.960 meaning we traveled at night during the time of Suhur. 00:10:21.960 --> 00:10:24.960 While we were on the road, 00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:27.960 we met 'Amr ibn al-'As, who said, 00:10:27.960 --> 00:10:30.960 'Welcome to the group!' We said, 'And to you.' 00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:33.960 He said, 'Where are you headed?' 00:10:33.960 --> 00:10:36.960 We said, 'What brought you out?' 00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:39.960 He said, 'Rather, what brought you out?' 00:10:39.960 --> 00:10:42.960 We said, 'To enter into Islam 00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:44.960 and follow Muhammad.' 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.960 'That is what brought me here,' he said. 00:10:47.960 --> 00:10:50.960 So we traveled together until we arrived in Madinah. 00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:53.960 My brother met me and said, 'Hurry, 00:10:53.960 --> 00:10:56.960 For the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:10:56.960 --> 00:10:59.960 had foretold your arrival, so be happy, 00:10:59.960 --> 00:11:01.960 for he is awaiting you. 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:04.960 I quickened my pace until I appeared before him, 00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:07.960 and he did not cease smiling at me until I stood right before him. 00:11:07.960 --> 00:11:09.960 I greeted him with the greeting of Prophethood, 00:11:09.960 --> 00:11:12.960 and he returned my greeting with a radiant face. 00:11:12.960 --> 00:11:15.960 I said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, 00:11:15.960 --> 00:11:18.960 and that you are the Messenger of Allah." 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:21.960 He replied, "Praise be to Allah who has guided you. 00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:24.960 I always saw that you possessed intelligence, 00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:28.019 and I hoped it would lead you only to what is good." 00:11:28.019 --> 00:11:31.019 From that day on, 00:11:31.019 --> 00:11:34.019 Khalid Ibn al-Walid turned toward Islam with his heart and soul. 00:11:34.019 --> 00:11:38.019 He began to regret all that had passed of his previous days, 00:11:38.019 --> 00:11:41.019 and once he said, 00:11:41.019 --> 00:11:43.019 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:11:43.019 --> 00:11:46.019 I have seen how I used to bear witness in those battles, 00:11:46.019 --> 00:11:48.090 resisting the truth; 00:11:48.090 --> 00:11:51.090 so pray to Allah to forgive me for them." 00:11:51.090 --> 00:11:54.090 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, answered him, 00:11:54.090 --> 00:11:57.090 "Indeed, Islam wipes away what came before it." 00:11:57.090 --> 00:12:00.090 Khalid returned to confirm his hope, 00:12:00.090 --> 00:12:03.090 so the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, prayed to his Lord, 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:05.090 and said, 00:12:05.090 --> 00:12:08.090 "O Allah, forgive Khalid Ibn al-Walid 00:12:08.090 --> 00:12:11.090 for all that has passed of his turning people away from Your path." 00:12:11.090 --> 00:12:14.090 Khalid was content with that, 00:12:14.090 --> 00:12:16.250 and his soul found peace. 00:12:16.250 --> 00:12:19.250 When the noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, resolved 00:12:19.250 --> 00:12:21.250 to conquer Makkah, 00:12:21.250 --> 00:12:25.250 he headed toward it, leading his green battalion. 00:12:25.250 --> 00:12:29.250 Abu Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah was in charge of the vanguard, 00:12:29.250 --> 00:12:32.250 al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam was on the right flank, 00:12:32.250 --> 00:12:35.250 and Khalid Ibn al-Walid was on the left flank. 00:12:35.250 --> 00:12:38.250 Thus, Khalid returned to Makkah as a commander, 00:12:38.250 --> 00:12:41.250 though only a few months had passed since his conversion to Islam. 00:12:41.250 --> 00:12:44.470 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:12:44.470 --> 00:12:47.470 when he entrusted Khalid Ibn al-Walid 00:12:47.470 --> 00:12:50.470 with one of his banners on the day of the entry into Makkah, 00:12:50.470 --> 00:12:53.470 despite the recentness of his Islam, 00:12:53.470 --> 00:12:56.470 was looking with the light of Prophethood at what would become 00:12:56.470 --> 00:12:59.470 of Khalid’s role in supporting Islam 00:12:59.470 --> 00:13:02.700 and raising high the banners of the Qur'an. 00:13:02.700 --> 00:13:05.700 The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, joined 00:13:05.700 --> 00:13:08.700 the Highest Companion, 00:13:08.700 --> 00:13:11.700 and the caliphate passed to Abu Bakr, 00:13:11.700 --> 00:13:14.700 may Allah be pleased with him. 00:13:14.700 --> 00:13:17.700 During his era, Khalid witnessed the wars 00:13:17.700 --> 00:13:20.700 of the apostasy from their beginning to their end, 00:13:20.700 --> 00:13:23.700 and he had the greatest share in the most important 00:13:23.700 --> 00:13:26.700 of their battles and the most difficult of their times, 00:13:26.700 --> 00:13:29.700 foremost among them being the Battle of al-Yamamah. 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:32.700 Khalid possessed in this field 00:13:32.700 --> 00:13:35.700 what no other man possessed, 00:13:35.700 --> 00:13:38.700 for he encountered the Persians and their allies in fifteen battles, 00:13:38.700 --> 00:13:41.700 and was not defeated in any of them, 00:13:41.700 --> 00:13:44.700 nor did he err or fail. 00:13:44.700 --> 00:13:47.700 When the Muslims intended to fight the Romans, 00:13:47.700 --> 00:13:50.700 Khalid had the honor of leading the Muslim army 00:13:50.700 --> 00:13:53.759 in the Battle of Yarmouk, 00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:56.759 the greatest of the Muslims' battles. 00:13:56.759 --> 00:13:59.759 Then the letter of the Commander of the Faithful, Umar Ibn al-Khattab, reached him, 00:13:59.759 --> 00:14:02.759 dismissing him from command 00:14:02.759 --> 00:14:05.759 while he was at the peak of his victories. 00:14:05.759 --> 00:14:08.759 He obeyed the command and handed over leadership to his successor, 00:14:08.759 --> 00:14:11.759 with a content soul. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:14.759 The great victor, Khalid Ibn al-Walid, transformed 00:14:14.759 --> 00:14:17.759 into a soldier in the Muslim army, 00:14:17.759 --> 00:14:20.759 after having been the commander of this army. 00:14:20.759 --> 00:14:23.759 May Allah have mercy on Abu Sulayman, 00:14:23.759 --> 00:14:26.759 for he was a unique model among the people. 00:14:26.759 --> 00:14:31.840 O Allah, forgive Khalid Ibn al-Walid 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:34.870 for all that has passed of his turning people away from Your path, 00:14:34.870 --> 00:14:38.190 as per the prayer of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for him.
