A verse and its Tafsir
Allah the Exalted says:
“O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah with right observance, and die not save as those who have surrendered (unto Him)” (3:102)
That is, preserve your Islam while you are in good health and safety, so that you may die upon it.
For the Generous One has established His custom through His generosity that whoever lives upon a thing dies upon it.
And whoever dies upon a thing will be resurrected upon it.
We seek refuge in Allah from the opposite of that.
Tafsir of Ibn Kathir:
If someone were to ask:
What is the meaning of "And do not die except as Muslims"?
Does a person have control over their final end such that they are commanded to ensure it?
The answer is:
That the intent is to command a person to prepare and equip themselves for their final end.
So they perform righteous deeds, hoping that their life may be concluded with them.
