I am one of the senior Companions, known for my courage and cunning.
I embraced Islam after the Battle of the Trench and witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan.
I was the personal bodyguard of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the day of Hudaybiyyah.
The reason for my conversion was that a group from the tribe of Banu Malik decided to visit the Muqawqis, the King of Egypt.
They intended to present him with gifts to receive some wealth in return.
I decided to join them, hoping to gain something from him myself.
I traveled with them until we reached him.
He looked at the leader of the Banu Malik group, brought him close, sat him beside him, and asked him questions.
He asked, "Are you all from Banu Malik?" He replied, "Yes, except for one man," and pointed to me.
I was the least significant of the group to him, yet he was pleased with their gifts and gave them rewards.
He gave me only a trivial amount, not worth mentioning, and we left his presence.
My companions went to the market to buy gifts for their families, and none of them offered to help me.
They left with wine and began drinking, so I resolved to kill them.
I feigned illness, wrapped my head, and said, "I have no need for drink, but I will serve you."
They did not suspect anything, so I began serving them, filling their cups one after another.
They drank without realizing until they fell asleep, intoxicated.
I pounced on them and killed them all.
There were thirteen men, and I took what they had with them.
I could not return to my people after what I had done.
So I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Medina.
I found him sitting in the mosque with his Companions.
I greeted him and informed him of what I had done.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"As for your Islam, we accept it."
"But we will not take any of their wealth."
"For this was treachery, and there is no good in treachery."
I was devastated and said:
"I only killed them while I was still following the religion of my people."
"I have only just embraced Islam."
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"Indeed, Islam wipes away what came before it."
My uncle, 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud, paid:
The blood money for those people.
I was one of the most cunning of the Arabs.
And I never fell into a situation:
But that I found a way out of it.
Among these instances is when 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him:
Appointed me as governor of Bahrain.
The people there disliked me, so 'Umar dismissed me.
They feared he would send me back to them.
So their leader from the Ansar said:
"If you do what I command you:"
"He will not send him back to us."
They said, "We will do it."
"What do you command us?"
He said, "Collect one hundred thousand dirhams."
"So that I may take it to 'Umar."
"And say to him:"
"The governor you appointed over us:"
"Betrayed the trust."
"And paid me this amount from the public treasury."
They collected one hundred thousand for him.
He came to 'Umar.
And told him that.
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me.
And asked me.
I said:
"You lie, by Allah, O Commander of the Faithful!"
"It was actually two hundred thousand."
He asked:
"What drove you to do this?"
I said:
"Family obligations and need."
"And now:"
"Let them return it to the public treasury."
'Umar then said to the man:
"What do you say?"
He said:
"No."
"By Allah, I will tell you the truth."
"By Allah, he did not pay me a little or a lot."
"It was merely a ruse."
"So that he would not return to us."
'Umar looked at me and said:
"What did you intend by this action of yours?"
I said:
"The wicked man lied about me."
"So I wanted to disgrace him."
