Here is a serious challenge: who am I?
I am one of the Companions from the Muhajirun.
I am the cousin of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
And I am the brother of one of his wives, the Mothers of the Believers.
I embraced Islam before the Prophet, peace be upon him, entered the house of al-Arqam.
I performed both migrations.
And I am the first commander in Islam.
For in the second year of the Hijrah,
The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent out a military expedition toward Mecca.
And he said to them:
"I will certainly appoint over you a man
Who is the most patient among you against hunger and thirst."
So he appointed me over them.
Thus, I was the first commander in Islam.
And it was the first banner ever raised in the cause of Allah.
We took spoils in that expedition,
And it was the first spoils of war for the Muslims.
I witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Prophet, peace be upon him.
And I witnessed the Battle of Uhud.
One day before the Battle of Uhud,
I prayed to Allah and said:
"O Allah, we are to meet these people tomorrow,
And I swear by You that they will kill me,
And rip open my stomach,
And cut off my nose.
So when You ask me,
'Why was this done to you?'
I will say,
'For Your sake, O Lord.'"
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, heard me.
After the battle,
What I had asked of my Lord was done to me.
Sa'd saw me,
And he said:
"As for this man, his prayer has been answered,
And Allah gave him what he asked for regarding his body in this world,
And I hope he is granted what he asked for in the Hereafter."
During that same battle,
My sword broke,
So the Prophet, peace be upon him, gave me a palm branch,
And it became a sharp sword in my hand.
It was called "al-'Urjun" (the branch).
After the battle,
I was buried alongside my maternal uncle, Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him,
In a single grave.
