A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.

Surah al-Humazah.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Woe to every scorner and mocker.
“Who hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it.” (104:2)
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
“Nay, but verily he will be flung to the Consuming One.” (104:4)
“Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is!” (104:5)
The fire of Allah, fueled.
“Which leapeth up over the hearts (of men).” (104:7)
Indeed, it is closed in upon them.

The valley flows with the pus and discharge of the people of the Fire.
For everyone who backbites others.
He backbites them, finds fault with them, and disparages them.
Who has gathered wealth and counted it.
And did not spend it in the way of Allah.
And did not fulfill the right of Allah regarding it.
Rather, he gathered it, stored it, and guarded it.
He thinks that the wealth he gathered, counted, and was stingy in spending,
Will make him immortal in this world and ward off death from him.
No, it is not as he imagined.
His wealth will not make him immortal.
He will surely be cast on the Day of Resurrection into the Fire.
I believe it was named as such because it crushes everything cast into it.
And what can make you know, O Muhammad, what the Crusher is?
It is the fire of Allah, fueled.
Which rises, with its pain and intensity, over the hearts.
Indeed, the Crusher, whose attributes have been described,
Is closed upon those who are scorners and mockers.
And they are punished with columns in the Fire.
And Allah knows best how He punishes them with it.
No report has reached us that constitutes a proof regarding the nature of their punishment by it.
