The Ash'ari interpretation of the divine attributes.
The Ash'aris interpret the names and attributes of Allah through one of the seven attributes they have established for Allah via rational deduction.
These are life, knowledge, power, will, hearing, sight, and speech.
In most cases, they interpret any attribute other than these seven.
They interpret them either as the attribute of power or the attribute of will.
If they find no justification for interpretation, they resort to tafwid.
This means delegating the intended meaning of the attribute to Allah the Exalted and refraining from explaining its significance.
They justify this by claiming to transcend Allah the Exalted above any resemblance to created beings.
Thus, in their view, transcendence is achieved through one of two ways: interpretation or delegation.
One of their proponents states regarding this:
"For every text that suggests anthropomorphism, interpret it or delegate its meaning, seeking thereby to uphold transcendence."
