WEBVTT 00:00:01.300 --> 00:00:12.179 Pause and get to know the Companions, scholars, and prominent figures! 00:00:12.179 --> 00:00:16.179 A new challenge: Who am I? 00:00:16.179 --> 00:00:22.739 I am one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:00:22.739 --> 00:00:27.739 a native of Mecca, and the son of one of its chief leaders. 00:00:27.739 --> 00:00:30.960 Both my brother 'Abdullah and I embraced Islam, 00:00:30.960 --> 00:00:33.990 but we kept our faith secret. 00:00:33.990 --> 00:00:36.990 When my father found out about our Islam, 00:00:36.990 --> 00:00:39.990 he imprisoned us, bound us in chains, and tortured us, 00:00:39.990 --> 00:00:45.020 preventing us from emigrating with the Muslims to Medina. 00:00:45.020 --> 00:00:49.020 So my brother feigned before them that he had renounced Islam 00:00:49.020 --> 00:00:53.060 and returned to their religion, so they released him. 00:00:53.060 --> 00:00:58.060 Then my brother 'Abdullah marched out with the polytheists when the call to arms came for Badr, 00:00:58.060 --> 00:01:01.060 traveling alongside my father and under his financial care, 00:01:01.060 --> 00:01:05.150 with my father harboring no doubt that he had reverted to his pagan ways. 00:01:05.150 --> 00:01:09.150 But when the Muslims and polytheists clashed at Badr, 00:01:09.150 --> 00:01:11.150 and the two hosts caught sight of each other, 00:01:11.150 --> 00:01:14.150 my brother 'Abdullah defected to the Muslim ranks, 00:01:14.150 --> 00:01:18.150 coming before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:20.150 before the battle began, 00:01:20.150 --> 00:01:23.150 and thus fought at Badr as a Muslim. 00:01:23.150 --> 00:01:27.150 That enraged my father with a tremendous fury. 00:01:27.150 --> 00:01:30.890 As for me, I remained in captivity 00:01:30.890 --> 00:01:35.890 until the Muslims arrived to perform the Umrah in the sixth year after the Hijrah. 00:01:35.890 --> 00:01:40.920 The Quraysh opposed them and barred them from entering the Sanctuary, 00:01:40.920 --> 00:01:42.920 so they encamped at al-Hudaybiyyah. 00:01:42.920 --> 00:01:46.950 Emissaries came and went between the two parties 00:01:46.950 --> 00:01:48.950 until they agreed upon terms of peace. 00:01:48.950 --> 00:01:54.950 The Quraysh sent my father to ratify the treaty with the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:01:54.950 --> 00:01:58.140 And while they were writing out the terms of the treaty, 00:01:59.140 --> 00:02:04.140 I suddenly emerged, fleeing toward the Muslims, hobbling in my chains, 00:02:04.140 --> 00:02:08.139 until I collapsed before them. 00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:11.139 When my father saw me, he said: 00:02:11.139 --> 00:02:15.139 "This is the very first matter upon which I demand you uphold the terms, O Muhammad! 00:02:15.139 --> 00:02:17.270 Hand him back to me!" 00:02:17.270 --> 00:02:20.270 The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied: 00:02:20.270 --> 00:02:22.270 "Release him to me as a gift." 00:02:22.270 --> 00:02:23.270 But he adamantly refused. 00:02:23.270 --> 00:02:27.270 So the Prophet, peace be upon him, handed me back. 00:02:27.270 --> 00:02:29.270 At that, I cried out at the top of my voice: 00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:31.270 "O assembly of Muslims! 00:02:31.270 --> 00:02:36.270 Am I to be returned to the polytheists so that they may persecute me away from my religion?!" 00:02:36.340 --> 00:02:40.340 Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to me: 00:02:40.340 --> 00:02:42.340 "Be patient and seek your reward with Allah, 00:02:42.340 --> 00:02:49.340 for Allah will surely make for you and the oppressed ones with you a relief and a way out. 00:02:49.340 --> 00:02:52.340 Indeed, we have made a treaty of peace with these people, 00:02:52.340 --> 00:02:54.340 and we will never break our word." 00:02:54.340 --> 00:02:56.530 Then my father stepped toward me 00:02:56.530 --> 00:02:59.530 and began striking my face with a thorny branch. 00:02:59.530 --> 00:03:04.620 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was deeply aggrieved by this, 00:03:04.620 --> 00:03:09.620 so he drew near to me and began walking by my side, saying: 00:03:09.620 --> 00:03:10.620 "Be patient, 00:03:10.620 --> 00:03:13.620 for they are only polytheists, 00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:17.620 and the blood of any of them is merely like the blood of a dog." 00:03:17.620 --> 00:03:19.620 He kept bringing his sword closer to my hand, 00:03:19.620 --> 00:03:23.620 hoping that I would take it and strike down my father with it, 00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:26.620 but I did not do so. 00:03:26.620 --> 00:03:31.419 Later on, I escaped a second time from my captivity and fetters, 00:03:31.419 --> 00:03:37.419 and joined Abu Basir, may Allah be pleased with him, and his band along the seashore. 00:03:37.419 --> 00:03:40.419 Together, we formed a company of Muslims, 00:03:40.419 --> 00:03:45.419 never letting a caravan belonging to the Quraysh pass by without seizing it, 00:03:45.419 --> 00:03:48.419 until the Quraysh became desperate because of us. 00:03:48.419 --> 00:03:52.419 So they sent word to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:03:52.419 --> 00:03:55.419 pleading with him to summon us to join him, 00:03:55.419 --> 00:03:57.419 and he did so. 00:03:57.419 --> 00:03:59.419 Because of all these circumstances, 00:03:59.419 --> 00:04:03.419 I was unable to participate alongside the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:04:03.419 --> 00:04:07.419 in any of his military expeditions prior to the Conquest of Mecca. 00:04:07.419 --> 00:04:09.710 So, who am I? 00:04:09.710 --> 00:04:17.680 Share your answers with us in the comments below the video, 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:21.899 and we will pin the correct answer in the comments section 00:04:21.899 --> 00:04:24.899 upon the release of the next episode, 00:04:24.899 --> 00:04:26.899 if Allah wills.
