Pause. Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted. Solve this riddle: Who am I? I am a Companion from the Muhajirun. I embraced Islam among the very first of the people of Makkah. I migrated to Abyssinia, then to Madinah. I had forbidden alcohol to myself even before Islam. I said, "I will not drink a beverage that robs me of my reason," "And causes someone inferior to me to mock me," "And leads me to marry off my daughter to someone unworthy." In Madinah, I asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for permission to practice celibacy, And to devote myself entirely to worship. He did not grant me permission. He said, "Do you not have a good example in me?" I replied, "Indeed, I do." He said, "For I marry women," "I eat meat, and I fast and break my fast." I witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Prophet, peace be upon him. After I returned to Madinah, I fell ill. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, visited me. He stayed with me until my time of death arrived. And my soul departed. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, wept for me, Until his tears flowed down his cheek. He said, "Go forth, Abu al-Sa'ib," "For you have departed from this world without having been tainted by any of it." I was buried in al-Baqi'. I was the first of the Muhajirun to die in Madinah, And the first to be buried in al-Baqi'. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, placed a stone on my grave so that he might recognize it. Umm al-'Ala' saw me in a dream, And she saw a river flowing beneath me. She mentioned this to the Prophet, peace be upon him. He said, "That is his deed," "Flowing for him after his death."
