Pause. Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted among them. A new challenge: Who am I? I am one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, from the people of Yemen. I embraced Islam in the seventh year of the Hijrah. I kept close company with the Prophet, peace be upon him. I would accompany him into the homes of his wives and serve him. I went on military expeditions, performed Hajj, and prayed behind him. Until I became the most knowledgeable of people regarding his hadith. I was a poor, destitute man. I accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, simply to fill my stomach. One day, he spoke to us and said: "Whoever spreads out his garment until I finish my speech," "and then gathers it to himself," "will never forget anything he heard from me." I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." I spread out my garment. By the One who sent him with the truth, I have never forgotten anything I heard from him. I used to spend my time with the poor among the Ahl al-Suffah. I would collapse from hunger between the grave and the pulpit. To the point that people would say I was insane. My need became so great, that I would lean against the ground, and I would tie a stone against my stomach to suppress the hunger. One day, I sat on the path people used. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me. I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, though I only asked him so that he might invite me to eat. He answered me, but did not realize my need. Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by. I asked him, and he answered, but he did not do so either. Finally, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by me. He recognized the hunger on my face. He called out to me, and I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." I entered the house with him. He found some milk in a bowl. He asked his family, "Where did you get this from?" They replied, "So-and-so sent it to you." He said to me, "Go to the Ahl al-Suffah and invite them." Despair overcame me, for I had hoped to have a drink of that milk to gain some strength. And what would this milk amount to among the Ahl al-Suffah? But there was no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger. I went to them, and they came, responding to the call. When they sat down, he, peace be upon him, said to me, "Take the bowl and offer them the milk." I began giving it to a man, and he would drink until he was satisfied. Then I would give it to the next, and he would drink until he was satisfied. Until I had served them all. Then I handed it to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He raised his head toward me, smiling, and said, "Only you and I remain." I said, "You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Drink," so I drank. He said, "Drink," so I drank. He kept saying "Drink," and I kept drinking until I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I can find no more room for it." He took the bowl from me, mentioned the name of Allah, and drank the remainder. In my own home, I would spend the entire night in worship. I would divide the night into three parts: one third for me, one third for my wife, and one third for my servant. I would perform the Witr prayer before I slept. I would fast three days of every month. I would pray the Duha prayer, acting upon the advice of my beloved, peace be upon him. And I would recite 12,000 tasbihs daily. So, who am I? The best of generations in their stance and example, following the Messenger whether he moved or spoke. They were here, watering our lives like rain, and though they have passed, their memory remains exalted among us. They departed, leaving a question in the conscience: Is there any star like them that has risen and shone? They filled life with pride through their deeds, and the world of humanity flourished because of them.
