WEBVTT 00:00:00.460 --> 00:00:03.459 Pause. 00:00:03.459 --> 00:00:08.460 Get to know the Companions, the scholars, and the most exalted among them. 00:00:12.460 --> 00:00:16.460 A new challenge: Who am I? 00:00:16.460 --> 00:00:25.179 I am one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, from the people of Yemen. 00:00:25.179 --> 00:00:29.179 I embraced Islam in the seventh year of the Hijrah. 00:00:29.179 --> 00:00:32.179 I kept close company with the Prophet, peace be upon him. 00:00:32.179 --> 00:00:36.179 I would accompany him into the homes of his wives and serve him. 00:00:36.179 --> 00:00:40.179 I went on military expeditions, performed Hajj, and prayed behind him. 00:00:40.179 --> 00:00:44.310 Until I became the most knowledgeable of people regarding his hadith. 00:00:44.310 --> 00:00:46.310 I was a poor, destitute man. 00:00:46.310 --> 00:00:52.310 I accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, simply to fill my stomach. 00:00:52.310 --> 00:00:56.409 One day, he spoke to us and said: 00:00:56.409 --> 00:01:00.409 "Whoever spreads out his garment until I finish my speech," 00:01:00.409 --> 00:01:02.409 "and then gathers it to himself," 00:01:02.409 --> 00:01:06.409 "will never forget anything he heard from me." 00:01:06.409 --> 00:01:09.409 I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." 00:01:09.409 --> 00:01:11.409 I spread out my garment. 00:01:11.409 --> 00:01:14.409 By the One who sent him with the truth, 00:01:14.409 --> 00:01:18.439 I have never forgotten anything I heard from him. 00:01:18.439 --> 00:01:24.560 I used to spend my time with the poor among the Ahl al-Suffah. 00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:28.560 I would collapse from hunger between the grave and the pulpit. 00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:31.560 To the point that people would say I was insane. 00:01:31.560 --> 00:01:34.590 My need became so great, 00:01:34.590 --> 00:01:37.590 that I would lean against the ground, 00:01:37.590 --> 00:01:41.590 and I would tie a stone against my stomach to suppress the hunger. 00:01:41.590 --> 00:01:46.010 One day, I sat on the path people used. 00:01:46.010 --> 00:01:49.010 Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me. 00:01:49.010 --> 00:01:53.010 I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah, 00:01:53.010 --> 00:01:57.010 though I only asked him so that he might invite me to eat. 00:01:57.010 --> 00:02:01.010 He answered me, but did not realize my need. 00:02:01.010 --> 00:02:04.099 Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by. 00:02:04.099 --> 00:02:09.099 I asked him, and he answered, but he did not do so either. 00:02:09.099 --> 00:02:13.099 Finally, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by me. 00:02:13.099 --> 00:02:16.099 He recognized the hunger on my face. 00:02:16.099 --> 00:02:19.099 He called out to me, and I said, 00:02:19.099 --> 00:02:22.099 "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." 00:02:22.099 --> 00:02:24.099 I entered the house with him. 00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:27.099 He found some milk in a bowl. 00:02:27.099 --> 00:02:31.099 He asked his family, "Where did you get this from?" 00:02:31.099 --> 00:02:35.099 They replied, "So-and-so sent it to you." 00:02:35.099 --> 00:02:40.099 He said to me, "Go to the Ahl al-Suffah and invite them." 00:02:40.099 --> 00:02:42.099 Despair overcame me, 00:02:42.099 --> 00:02:48.099 for I had hoped to have a drink of that milk to gain some strength. 00:02:48.099 --> 00:02:53.099 And what would this milk amount to among the Ahl al-Suffah? 00:02:53.099 --> 00:02:59.169 But there was no choice but to obey Allah and His Messenger. 00:02:59.169 --> 00:03:03.169 I went to them, and they came, responding to the call. 00:03:03.169 --> 00:03:08.169 When they sat down, he, peace be upon him, said to me, 00:03:08.169 --> 00:03:11.169 "Take the bowl and offer them the milk." 00:03:11.169 --> 00:03:16.169 I began giving it to a man, and he would drink until he was satisfied. 00:03:16.169 --> 00:03:21.169 Then I would give it to the next, and he would drink until he was satisfied. 00:03:21.169 --> 00:03:24.169 Until I had served them all. 00:03:24.169 --> 00:03:29.169 Then I handed it to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. 00:03:29.169 --> 00:03:33.169 He raised his head toward me, smiling, and said, 00:03:33.169 --> 00:03:39.169 "Only you and I remain."
