reddish hue. 00:00:47.259 --> 00:00:50.259 He had handsome cheeks, nose, and eyes, 00:00:50.259 --> 00:00:53.259 broad feet and hands, 00:00:53.259 --> 00:00:55.259 powerful and robust, 00:00:55.259 --> 00:00:57.259 neither frail nor weak. 00:00:57.259 --> 00:00:59.259 He used to dye his beard with henna, 00:00:59.259 --> 00:01:01.259 and had long mustache tips— 00:01:01.259 --> 00:01:03.259 which are the edges of the mustache hair. 00:01:03.259 --> 00:01:05.349 When he walked, he walked swiftly; 00:01:05.349 --> 00:01:07.349 when he spoke, he was clearly heard; 00:01:07.349 --> 00:01:09.349 and when he struck, he caused pain. 00:01:09.349 --> 00:01:13.859 This awe-inspiring, great man— 00:01:13.859 --> 00:01:16.859 the Qur'an flowed into his ears 00:01:16.859 --> 00:01:19.859 like pure, clear water, 00:01:19.859 --> 00:01:22.859 moving and shaking his heart, 00:01:22.859 --> 00:01:24.859 making his entire being tremble 00:01:24.859 --> 00:01:27.859 upon hearing the clear verses, 00:01:27.859 --> 00:01:29.930 so that he could not help 00:01:29.930 --> 00:01:32.930 but surrender to this divine light 00:01:32.930 --> 00:01:36.060 and join its ranks. 00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:39.060 His heart was illuminated after utter darkness, 00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:42.060 light and radiance graced his face, 00:01:42.060 --> 00:01:45.060 and his life shone anew. 00:02:33.819 --> 00:02:37.819 It was said to him, 'Jamil ibn Ma'mar al-Jumahi.' 00:02:37.819 --> 00:02:39.819 So he went to him early in the morning, 00:02:39.819 --> 00:02:41.819 and I followed closely behind his footsteps 00:02:41.819 --> 00:02:43.819 to see what he would do, 00:02:43.819 --> 00:02:46.819 as I was a boy who understood everything I saw. 00:02:46.819 --> 00:02:49.819 When he 00:02:57.819 By Allah, Jamil did not reply to him, 00:02:57.819 --> 00:02:59.819 but immediately stood up, dragging his garment, 00:02:59.819 --> 00:03:01.819 and 'Umar followed him, 00:03:01.819 --> 00:03:03.819 and I followed my father. 00:03:03.819 --> 00:03:06.819 When Jamil stood at the door of the Mosque, 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:08.819 he cried out at the top of his voice, 00:03:08.819 --> 00:03:10.819 'O people of Quraysh!'— 00:03:10.819 --> 00:03:13.819 while they were gathered in their assemblies around the Ka'bah— 00:03:13.819 --> 00:03:15.819 'Behold, 'Umar has apostatized!' 00:03:15.819 --> 00:03:17.819 'Umar, behind him, was saying, 00:03:17.819 --> 00:03:18.819 'He lies! 00:03:18.819 --> 00:03:20.819 Rather, I have embraced Islam, 00:03:20.819 --> 00:03:23.819 and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, 00:03:23.819 --> 00:03:26.819 and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger!' 00:03:27.819 --> 00:03:29.819 Quraysh pounced upon 'Umar, 00:03:29.819 --> 00:03:31.819 and they struck him and he struck them; 00:03:31.819 --> 00:03:34.819 they fought him and he fought them, 00:03:34.819 --> 00:03:37.819 until the sun reached its zenith over their heads. 00:03:37.819 --> 00:03:38.819 'Umar grew exhausted 00:03:38.819 --> 00:03:40.819 and sat down, 00:03:40.819 --> 00:03:42.819 while they stood over him, 00:03:42.819 --> 00:03:43.819 and he was saying, 00:03:43.819 --> 00:03:45.819 'Do whatever you please! 00:03:45.819 --> 00:03:47.819 For I swear by Allah, 00:03:47.819 --> 00:03:50.819 if we were three hundred men, 00:03:50.819 --> 00:03:52.819 we would have left it to you, 00:03:52.819 --> 00:03:54.819 or you would have left it to us!' 00:03:54.819 --> 00:03:56.819 Meanwhile, 00:03:56.819 --> 00:03:58.819 as 'Umar was being beaten, there passed by 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:00.819 an elder of Quraysh 00:04:00.819 --> 00:04:02.819 wearing a fine striped Yemeni cloak. 00:04:02.819 --> 00:04:05.819 He stopped before them and said, 00:04:05.819 --> 00:04:06.819 'What is the matter with you?' 00:04:06.819 --> 00:04:08.819 They replied, ''Umar has apostatized!' 00:04:08.819 --> 00:04:10.819 He said, 'So what? 00:04:10.819 --> 00:04:13.819 A man has chosen a path for himself, 00:04:13.819 --> 00:04:15.819 so what do you want? 00:04:15.819 --> 00:04:17.819 Do you think the clan of 'Adi ibn Ka'b 00:04:17.819 --> 00:04:20.819 will surrender their companion to you like this? 00:04:20.819 --> 00:04:22.819 Leave the man alone!' 00:04:22.819 --> 00:04:23.819 He said, 00:04:23.819 --> 00:04:25.819 'By Allah, it was as if they were 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:27.819 a garment peeled away from him.' 00:04:27.819 --> 00:04:29.819 Later, Ibn 'Umar asked his father, 00:04:29.819 --> 00:04:31.819 after their migration, 00:04:31.819 --> 00:04:33.819 'O my father, who was the man 00:04:33.819 --> 00:04:35.819 who drove the people away from you 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:37.819 in Makkah on the day you embraced Islam, 00:04:37.819 --> 00:04:39.819 when they were fighting you?' 00:04:39.819 --> 00:04:41.819 He said, 'O my son, 00:04:41.819 --> 00:04:43.819 that was al-'As ibn Wa'il 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:45.360 al-Sahmi.'" 00:04:45.360 --> 00:04:47.360 'Umar embraced Islam on a Tuesday 00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:49.360 after Maghrib, 00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:51.360 in the sixth year of the Prophetic mission. 00:04:51.360 --> 00:04:55.360 His conversion was after thirty-nine men had accepted Islam. 00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:57.360 The conversion of 'Umar brought 00:04:57.360 --> 00:04:59.360 honor, elevation, and strength 00:04:59.360 --> 00:05:02.360 to Islam and the Muslims, 00:05:02.360 --> 00:05:04.360 owing to his high standing 00:05:04.360 --> 00:05:06.360 and awe-inspiring personality 00:05:06.360 --> 00:05:09.360 among the pre-Islamic society. 00:05:09.360 --> 00:05:12.420 It is reported that 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:05:12.420 --> 00:05:15.420 said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:05:15.420 --> 00:05:17.420 when he embraced Islam: 00:05:17.420 --> 00:05:19.420 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:21.420 why should we conceal our religion 00:05:21.420 --> 00:05:23.420 when we are on the truth, 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:25.420 while their religion is manifest though they are on falsehood?" 00:05:25.420 --> 00:05:27.420 So 'Umar went out 00:05:27.420 --> 00:05:29.420 and circumambulated the House, 00:05:29.420 --> 00:05:31.420 then passed by Quraysh 00:05:31.420 --> 00:05:33.420 while they were waiting for him. 00:05:33.420 --> 00:05:35.420 Abu Jahl said, 00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:37.420 "So-and-so claimed that you have apostatized." 00:05:37.420 --> 00:05:39.420 'Umar said, 00:05:39.420 --> 00:05:42.420 "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, 00:05:42.420 --> 00:05:44.420 and I bear witness that Muhammad 00:05:44.420 --> 00:05:46.420 is His servant and Messenger." 00:05:46.420 --> 00:05:48.420 The polytheists sprang upon him, 00:05:48.420 --> 00:05:51.420 and he pounced on 'Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, 00:05:51.420 --> 00:05:54.420 pinned him down and began beating him, 00:05:54.420 --> 00:05:56.420 thrusting his fingers into his eyes 00:05:56.420 --> 00:05:58.420 until 'Utbah began screaming, 00:05:58.420 --> 00:06:00.420 so the people backed away from him. 00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:04.420 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out, 00:06:04.420 --> 00:06:06.420 with 'Umar walking ahead of him 00:06:06.420 --> 00:06:09.420 and Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, 00:06:09.420 --> 00:06:11.420 until he circumambulated the House 00:06:11.420 --> 00:06:13.420 and openly prayed Zuhr, 00:06:13.420 --> 00:06:17.420 after which the Messenger of Allah departed. 00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:20.620 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 00:06:20.620 --> 00:06:24.620 "We have remained mighty ever since 'Umar embraced Islam." 00:06:24.620 --> 00:06:29.620 It is also narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 00:06:29.620 --> 00:06:32.620 "When 'Umar embraced Islam, the polytheists said, 00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:35.620 'Today the people have gained equal footing with us.'" 00:06:35.620 --> 00:06:39.899 'Umar migrated secretly, 00:06:39.899 --> 00:06:43.899 just like the emigrants before him and after him, 00:06:43.899 --> 00:06:46.899 among whom were the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:06:47.899 --> 00:06:50.899 and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). 00:06:50.899 --> 00:06:53.899 He said, recounting the story of his migration: 00:06:53.899 --> 00:06:57.899 "When we intended to migrate to Madinah, we made an appointment— 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:00.899 myself, 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah, 00:07:00.899 --> 00:07:02.899 and Hisham ibn al-'As— 00:07:02.899 --> 00:07:05.899 to meet at a place outside Makkah. 00:07:05.899 --> 00:07:10.899 We agreed that whoever of us did not reach it by morning had been detained, 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:12.899 so his two companions should proceed. 00:07:12.899 --> 00:07:16.899 He said: 'So I and 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah met, 00:07:16.899 --> 00:07:18.899 while Hisham was detained from us 00:07:18.899 --> 00:07:20.899 and subjected to persecution regarding his religion.'" 00:07:20.899 --> 00:07:25.899 A number of 'Umar's relatives and their allies joined him, 00:07:25.899 --> 00:07:28.899 numbering twenty men. 00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:32.029 The Prophet (peace be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood 00:07:32.029 --> 00:07:37.029 between him and 'Itban ibn Malik al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:07:37.029 --> 00:07:41.029 Thus, he lived a life of faith in Madinah, 00:07:41.029 --> 00:07:44.029 in all its beauty and splendor. 00:07:44.029 --> 00:07:48.029 'Umar was transformed from that pagan man 00:07:48.029 --> 00:07:53.060 into a possessor of true, unwavering creed. 00:07:53.060 --> 00:07:55.060 For he once said, 00:07:55.060 --> 00:07:58.060 while touching and kissing the Black Stone: 00:07:58.060 --> 00:08:04.060 "By Allah, I know that you are a stone that neither harms nor benefits, 00:08:04.060 --> 00:08:10.060 and had I not seen the Prophet (peace be upon him) kissing you, I would not have kissed you." 00:08:10.060 --> 00:08:14.509 After embracing Islam, 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, had 00:08:14.509 --> 00:08:18.509 a share in every field of good deeds, 00:08:18.509 --> 00:08:23.509 being among the foremost noble disciples of the Prophetic school. 00:08:23.509 --> 00:08:28.509 On a dew-laden night of tranquil surroundings, 00:08:28.509 --> 00:08:33.509 the Prophet (peace be upon him) was checking on the condition of his Companions. 00:08:33.509 --> 00:08:37.509 He asked Abu Bakr, "When do you pray Witr?" 00:08:37.509 --> 00:08:40.509 He replied, "I pray Witr in the early part of the night." 00:08:40.509 --> 00:08:43.509 And he asked 'Umar, "When do you pray Witr?" 00:08:43.509 --> 00:08:46.509 He replied, "At the end of the night." 00:08:46.509 --> 00:08:50.509 So he said to Abu Bakr, "This one has acted with prudence," 00:08:50.509 --> 00:08:54.509 and said to 'Umar, "This one has acted with resolve." 00:08:54.509 --> 00:09:00.580 It is established that 'Umar fasted continuously for two years before his death, 00:09:00.580 --> 00:09:04.580 and he would exert himself while fasting on intensely hot days, 00:09:04.580 --> 00:09:07.580 saying to himself, "Rejoice in the quenching of your thirst!" 00:09:07.580 --> 00:09:12.860 'Umar came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, 00:09:12.860 --> 00:09:14.860 "O Messenger of Allah, 00:09:14.860 --> 00:09:16.860 I have acquired land in Khaybar, 00:09:16.860 --> 00:09:20.860 and I have never acquired property more precious to me than it; 00:09:20.860 --> 00:09:22.860 what do you command me to do with it?" 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:27.860 He said, "If you wish, you may make the property itself inalienable and give its yield in charity." 00:09:27.860 --> 00:09:30.860 So 'Umar gave it in charity. 00:09:30.860 --> 00:09:32.990 Yet, despite all of that, 00:09:32.990 --> 00:09:38.990 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, feared his past sins with the utmost fear, 00:09:38.990 --> 00:09:40.990 supplicating and saying: 00:09:40.990 --> 00:09:44.990 "O Allah, if You have recorded against me a sin or a transgression, 00:09:44.990 --> 00:09:46.990 "then forgive it for me, 00:09:46.990 --> 00:09:49.990 for You efface and confirm whatever You will, 00:09:49.990 --> 00:09:52.990 and with You is the Mother of the Book." 00:09:52.990 --> 00:09:57.279 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was gifted with such immense knowledge 00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:00.279 that he surpassed many of the Companions. 00:10:00.279 --> 00:10:05.279 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, testified to this, 00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:06.279 saying: 00:10:06.279 --> 00:10:08.279 "While I was asleep, 00:10:08.279 --> 00:10:10.279 a cup of milk was brought to me, 00:10:10.279 --> 00:10:15.279 and I drank from it until I saw the satisfaction flowing out of my fingernails. 00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:18.279 Then I gave my leftover to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab." 00:10:18.279 --> 00:10:22.279 They asked, "How did you interpret it, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:25.279 He replied, "Knowledge." 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:28.279 And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:30.279 "While I was asleep, 00:10:30.279 --> 00:10:34.279 I saw people being presented before me wearing shirts; 00:10:34.279 --> 00:10:36.279 some reached up to the breasts, 00:10:36.279 --> 00:10:39.279 and some fell below that. 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:41.279 Then 'Umar was presented before me 00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:44.279 wearing a shirt that he was dragging along." 00:10:44.279 --> 00:10:48.340 They asked, "How did you interpret it, O Messenger of Allah?" 00:10:48.340 --> 00:10:51.340 He replied, "Religious commitment." 00:10:51.340 --> 00:10:55.379 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was keen on marriage 00:10:55.379 --> 00:10:58.379 out of a desire for children and increasing his progeny. 00:10:58.379 --> 00:11:03.379 Whenever he divorced one of his four wives or whenever one died, 00:11:03.379 --> 00:11:06.379 he would marry another in her place, 00:11:06.379 --> 00:11:10.379 so that the total number of women he married reached fourteen. 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:14.379 He had ten sons 00:11:14.379 --> 00:11:16.379 and seven daughters. 00:11:16.379 --> 00:11:18.379 He used to say: 00:11:18.379 --> 00:11:21.379 "I compel myself to intimacy 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:23.379 in the hope that Allah will bring forth from me 00:11:23.379 --> 00:11:25.379 a living soul that glorifies Allah." 00:11:25.379 --> 00:11:27.379 The formidable presence of 'Umar— 00:11:27.379 --> 00:11:30.379 and what will make you realize what 'Umar's presence was! 00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:32.379 That immense awe 00:11:32.379 --> 00:11:36.379 made people fear him both before Islam and after it; 00:11:36.379 --> 00:11:39.379 indeed, even the devils used to flee from him! 00:11:39.379 --> 00:11:42.379 For the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 00:11:42.379 --> 00:11:45.379 "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, 00:11:45.379 --> 00:11:49.379 whenever Satan meets you traveling along a path, 00:11:49.379 --> 00:11:52.379 he takes a path other than yours." 00:11:52.379 --> 00:11:56.379 More remains to be told of
