WEBVTT 00:00:01.419 --> 00:00:07.419 The story of the Hajj of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her. 00:00:07.419 --> 00:00:13.660 The hardship of Hajj and ‘Umrah. 00:00:13.660 --> 00:00:18.519 The rituals of Hajj inevitably involve physical exertion. 00:00:18.519 --> 00:00:22.519 This exertion is inseparable from this act of worship. 00:00:22.519 --> 00:00:28.550 Some people today have attempted to turn Hajj into a tourist trip devoid of hardship. 00:00:28.550 --> 00:00:31.550 In doing so, they have stripped Hajj of its deeper meanings. 00:00:31.550 --> 00:00:37.549 They have failed to maintain the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in it. 00:00:37.549 --> 00:00:42.549 Thus, they have brought forth a Hajj different from the one performed by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:00:42.549 --> 00:00:46.549 It is devoid of the sacred sentiments and spirituality. 00:00:46.549 --> 00:00:51.549 Consequently, they have lost many of the great meanings inherent in this magnificent ritual. 00:00:51.549 --> 00:00:58.869 Part of the Prophet’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, upbringing of our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, 00:00:58.869 --> 00:01:06.870 was to clarify to her that the reward for the ritual is linked to the expenditure and the hardship stemming from its performance. 00:01:06.870 --> 00:01:07.870 He said: 00:01:07.870 --> 00:01:11.870 "It is according to your expenditure or your exertion." 00:01:11.870 --> 00:01:13.870 Meaning, your reward in this 00:01:13.870 --> 00:01:16.870 is proportional to your fatigue and your effort in the ‘Umrah, 00:01:16.870 --> 00:01:19.870 or your expenditure in that regard. 00:01:19.870 --> 00:01:24.099 The hardship here is not intended for its own sake, 00:01:24.099 --> 00:01:28.099 but rather it is one of the requirements of performing the rituals, 00:01:28.099 --> 00:01:30.099 and it is inherent to them. 00:01:30.099 --> 00:01:34.099 This is what the pilgrim is rewarded for. 00:01:34.099 --> 00:01:42.099 This is a general principle in all acts of worship that are linked to an inseparable hardship in their performance; so it was one of the blessings of the family of Abu Bakr upon the people. 00:03:43.460 --> 00:03:56.340 On the way to the ‘Umrah of al-Tan‘im, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, complied with what the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had commanded him. 00:03:56.340 --> 00:04:08.340 He had our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, ride behind him on his camel and set off with her to al-Tan‘im; *irdaf* means to have her sit behind him on the camel. 00:04:08.340 --> 00:04:15.340 This is permissible with mahrams, provided that the riding does not cause the bodies to press against one another. 00:04:15.340 --> 00:04:28.889 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, was young at that time, approximately seventeen years old; she says about herself, may Allah be pleased with her: 00:04:28.889 --> 00:04:39.920 "I remember, as a young girl, I would become drowsy, and my face would hit the back of the saddle." There is no strangeness in her drowsiness, 00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:50.920 for the time she moved to perform the ‘Umrah was at night, which is the time for sleep and rest, according to the custom of people in every era. 00:04:50.920 --> 00:05:03.209 She also explained that she was young, and even though it was late at night in an era when lights were not widespread, 00:05:03.209 --> 00:05:10.209 and our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, was traveling with her brother alone, and the weather was hot, 00:05:10.209 --> 00:05:21.339 the protective jealousy (*ghayrah*) of the noble Companion ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr for her was great. Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says: 00:05:21.339 --> 00:05:32.339 "I began to lift my veil, uncovering it from my neck, and he would strike my leg with the end of the camel’s rein. I said to him, 'Do you see anyone?'" 00:05:32.339 --> 00:05:43.339 The meaning is that he would strike her leg with a whip, a stick, or something similar when she uncovered her veil from her neck, out of protective jealousy for her. 00:05:43.339 --> 00:05:52.339 She said to him, "Do you see anyone?" meaning, we are in an open space; there is no stranger here from whom I must conceal myself. 00:05:52.339 --> 00:05:59.720 This is the protective jealousy of a Companion for his mahrams in the desert, at night, when no one is around. 00:05:59.720 --> 00:06:11.750 So what of the state of some men today who are content for their wives, daughters, and mahrams to uncover their bodies before the eyes of all people? 00:06:11.750 --> 00:06:22.939 So, my sister pilgrim, be mindful of the protective jealousy of your guardian or husband during Hajj, and do not do things that provoke his jealousy, even if they were permissible. 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:29.939 Protective jealousy in a man is a praiseworthy trait for which he should be thanked, and it is a sign of his manhood. 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:38.009 Just as you should bear whatever anger or raised voice may come from him due to his protective jealousy for you. 00:06:38.009 --> 00:06:45.860 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, performed the ‘Umrah from al-Tan‘im. 00:06:45.860 --> 00:06:57.050 When our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, arrived at al-Tan‘im, she entered into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah alone, and her brother ‘Abd al-Rahman did not. 00:06:57.050 --> 00:07:03.050 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says: "Until we came to al-Tan‘im, 00:07:03.050 --> 00:07:12.050 I entered into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah, as a substitute for the ‘Umrah of the people who had performed it, then I circumambulated the House and performed Sa‘i between Safa and Marwa." 00:07:12.050 --> 00:07:23.110 Then she cut some of her hair to conclude her ‘Umrah, thereby exiting her state of ihram and returning to her beloved, with a peaceful soul. 00:07:23.110 --> 00:07:26.110 She had achieved her desire. 00:07:26.110 --> 00:07:34.339 This ‘Umrah only took place for our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, after the completion of all the Hajj rites. 00:07:34.339 --> 00:07:41.339 The days of Tashriq had ended, as our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, informed us of that. 00:07:41.339 --> 00:07:51.339 She said: "When we had finished the Hajj, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent me with ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to al-Tan‘im, 00:07:51.339 --> 00:07:56.339 and I performed ‘Umrah. He said, 'This is in place of your ‘Umrah.'" 00:07:56.339 --> 00:08:01.660 When our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, finished the rituals of her ‘Umrah, 00:08:01.660 --> 00:08:05.660 she returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:08:05.660 --> 00:08:12.660 He had promised her and specified the place for her by saying, "Then come to such-and-such a place." 00:08:12.660 --> 00:08:18.689 This place he pointed to is al-Muhassab, which is in the upper part of Mecca. 00:08:19.689 --> 00:08:22.720 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:29.720 "Then I went out with him in the second group until he descended at al-Muhassab, and we descended with him." 00:08:29.720 --> 00:08:32.720 He called ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr and said: 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:35.720 "Take your sister out of the Haram, 00:08:35.720 --> 00:08:38.720 let her enter into the state of ihram for ‘Umrah, then when you have finished, 00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:40.720 then come to me here, 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:44.720 for I will wait for you both until you return to me." 00:08:45.720 --> 00:08:51.720 So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, waited for her in the upper part of Mecca until she arrived. 00:08:51.720 --> 00:08:55.720 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says: 00:08:55.720 --> 00:09:02.720 "Then we approached until we reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while he was at al-Hasbah." 00:09:02.720 --> 00:09:10.980 The time of our Mother ‘A’ishah’s, may Allah be pleased with her, return from ‘Umrah was at the end of the night, at the time of *sahar* (pre-dawn). 00:09:10.980 --> 00:09:21.039 Our Mother ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says: "Then I came to him at *sahar*, and he said, 'Have you finished?' I said, 'Yes.'" 00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:30.100 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had waited for her without annoyance, and when she arrived, his expression was beautiful: 00:09:30.100 --> 00:09:37.100 "Have you finished?" He did not say, "You are late," nor did he show any annoyance at her going for ‘Umrah. 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:46.100 Rather, he showed manifest love for her; indeed, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, added to it from his beautiful character and kind companionship, 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:54.100 that he said to her, "This is in place of your ‘Umrah," to soothe her heart and reassure her soul, 00:09:54.100 --> 00:10:01.100 because she had only requested the ‘Umrah to be equal to those of his wives and companions who had performed it. 00:10:01.100 --> 00:10:05.100 So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, reassured her by saying, 00:10:05.100 --> 00:10:10.100 "This is in place of your ‘Umrah," meaning, a compensation for your missed ‘Umrah.
