That is..." 00:00:50.380 --> 00:00:53.380 “O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.” (7:26) 00:00:53.380 --> 00:00:55.380 "...that they might remember." 00:00:56.219 --> 00:00:59.219 Sayyid Qutb, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 00:00:59.219 --> 00:01:02.219 There is a correlation between the law of Allah, 00:01:02.219 --> 00:01:05.219 which provides clothing to cover private parts and for adornment, 00:01:05.219 --> 00:01:07.219 and taqwa. 00:01:07.219 --> 00:01:09.219 Both are garments. 00:01:09.219 --> 00:01:12.219 One covers and adorns the private parts of the heart, 00:01:12.219 --> 00:01:15.219 and the other covers and adorns the private parts of the body. 00:01:15.219 --> 00:01:18.280 They are inseparable. 00:01:18.280 --> 00:01:21.280 For from the feeling of taqwa for Allah and modesty before Him 00:01:21.280 --> 00:01:24.280 springs the feeling of finding bodily nakedness repulsive, 00:01:24.280 --> 00:01:26.280 and the sense of modesty regarding it. 00:01:26.280 --> 00:01:29.280 And whoever does not feel modesty before Allah nor has taqwa of Him, 00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:31.280 does not care about being naked, 00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:34.280 or about calling others to nakedness— 00:01:34.280 --> 00:01:37.280 nakedness from modesty and taqwa, 00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:40.659 and nakedness from clothing and the exposure of private parts. 00:01:40.659 --> 00:01:43.659 Clothing is a blessing from Allah; 00:01:43.659 --> 00:01:46.659 He sent it down to us for a purpose He clarified for us 00:01:46.659 --> 00:01:49.659 in the same verse by saying: 00:01:49.659 --> 00:01:52.659 “O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.” (7:26) 00:01:52.659 --> 00:01:55.730 Thus, covering is a legal requirement 00:01:55.730 --> 00:01:58.920 that aligns with sound human nature (fitra). 00:01:58.920 --> 00:02:01.920 Muhammad Rashid Rida, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 00:02:01.920 --> 00:02:04.920 Allah the Almighty addressed the children of Adam 00:02:04.920 --> 00:02:07.920 in this verse and others like it 00:02:07.920 --> 00:02:10.919 with a call used for those who are distant, 00:02:10.919 --> 00:02:13.919 because of the state of the Arabs and non-Arabs alike 00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:16.919 at the time this Surah was revealed in Makkah, 00:02:16.919 --> 00:02:19.919 in their distance from sound human nature 00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:22.919 and the upright path. 00:02:22.919 --> 00:02:25.919 It was a warning to their minds, striking their ears, 00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:29.919 informing them of the nakedness of their earliest ancestors, 00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:32.919 and of what He had blessed them with 00:02:32.919 --> 00:02:35.919 in terms of clothing of varying degrees, 00:02:35.919 --> 00:02:38.919 and types, from the most basic, 00:02:38.919 --> 00:02:41.919 which conceals the private parts from the eyes of people, 00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:44.919 to the types of garments 00:02:44.919 --> 00:02:47.919 that resemble the feathers of birds in protecting the body 00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:50.919 from heat and cold by covering the entire body, 00:02:50.919 --> 00:02:53.919 along with the various types of adornment therein, 00:02:53.919 --> 00:02:56.919 which are appropriate for all human males 00:02:56.919 --> 00:02:59.919 and females, 00:02:59.919 --> 00:03:02.919 regardless of their ages or circumstances. 00:03:02.919 --> 00:03:05.919 He says: 00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:08.919 "O children of Adam, 00:03:08.919 --> 00:03:11.919 We, by virtue of Our power, grace, and mercy, 00:03:11.919 --> 00:03:14.919 have sent down to you from the height of Our heavens, 00:03:14.919 --> 00:03:17.919 through Our management of your affairs from above Our Throne, 00:03:17.919 --> 00:03:20.919 clothing to conceal your private parts— 00:03:20.919 --> 00:03:23.919 and Allah considers the one who lacks it 00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:26.919 to be humiliated and disgraced— 00:03:26.919 --> 00:03:29.919 and adornment with which you beautify yourselves in your mosques, 00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.919 your gatherings, and your assemblies." 00:03:32.919 --> 00:03:35.919 This is the highest and most complete form. 00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:38.919 Between these two is the clothing of necessity, 00:03:38.919 --> 00:03:42.270 which is what protects against heat and cold. 00:03:42.270 --> 00:03:45.270 Every girl in the world loves beauty 00:03:45.270 --> 00:03:48.270 and loves beautiful clothing, 00:03:49.270 --> 00:03:52.270 and Allah the Almighty has not forbidden it; 00:03:52.270 --> 00:03:55.270 rather, He has regulated it with guidelines 00:03:55.270 --> 00:03:58.400 to protect her and cover her. 00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:01.400 Furthermore, Allah has guided 00:04:01.400 --> 00:04:04.400 those who love beauty to adorn themselves 00:04:04.400 --> 00:04:07.400 with the garment of taqwa, 00:04:07.400 --> 00:04:10.400 so that they may increase in beauty upon beauty, 00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:13.400 and in the beauty of their attire. 00:04:13.400 --> 00:04:16.589 He said, "But the garment of taqwa—that is best." 00:04:16.589 --> 00:04:19.589 Al-Tabari, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 00:04:19.589 --> 00:04:22.589 He only began the report about His sending down the clothing 00:04:22.589 --> 00:04:25.589 that conceals our private parts 00:04:25.589 --> 00:04:28.589 and the adornment as a rebuke to the polytheists 00:04:28.589 --> 00:04:31.589 who used to strip naked while performing their circumambulation 00:04:31.589 --> 00:04:34.589 of the House (the Ka'bah), and He commands them to take 00:04:34.589 --> 00:04:37.589 their garments and cover themselves in every situation, 00:04:37.589 --> 00:04:40.589 along with believing in Him and following His obedience. 00:04:40.589 --> 00:04:43.660 He teaches them that all of that— 00:04:43.660 --> 00:04:46.660 everything they were persisting in 00:04:46.660 --> 00:04:49.660 of their disbelief in Allah and their nakedness— 00:04:49.660 --> 00:04:52.660 is not that He informed them that some of what 00:04:52.660 --> 00:04:55.939 was sent down to them is better than others. 00:04:55.939 --> 00:04:58.939 What indicates the correctness of what we have said regarding this 00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:01.939 are the verses that follow this verse, 00:05:01.939 --> 00:05:04.939 namely His saying: 00:05:04.939 --> 00:05:07.939 “O Children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you as he caused your (first) parents to go forth from the Garden and tore off from them their robe (of innocence) that he might manifest their shame to them. Lo! he seeth you, he and his tribe, from whence ye see him not. Lo! We have made the devils protecting friends for those who believe not.” (7:27) 00:05:07.939 --> 00:05:10.939 “O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.” (7:26) 00:05:53.139 --> 00:05:56.139 “O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.” (7:26) 00:05:56.139 --> 00:05:59.139 "But the garment of taqwa—that 00:05:59.139 --> 00:06:02.230 is best." 00:06:02.230 --> 00:06:05.230 The most correct of opinions in interpreting His saying is 00:06:06.230 --> 00:06:09.230 the soul's awareness of the taqwa of Allah, 00:06:09.230 --> 00:06:12.230 in refraining from what Allah has forbidden of His disobedience, 00:06:12.230 --> 00:06:15.230 and acting upon what He has commanded of His obedience. 00:06:15.230 --> 00:06:18.230 This encompasses faith, 00:06:18.230 --> 00:06:21.230 righteous deeds, modesty, 00:06:21.230 --> 00:06:24.230 fear of Allah, and a good demeanor. 00:06:24.230 --> 00:06:27.300 Because whoever has taqwa of Allah 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:30.300 is a believer in Him, acts upon what He has commanded, 00:06:30.300 --> 00:06:33.300 and fears Him, 00:06:34.300 --> 00:06:37.300 and is modest before Him, lest He see him 00:06:37.300 --> 00:06:40.300 doing what He dislikes from His servants. 00:06:40.300 --> 00:06:43.300 Whoever is like that, the traces of goodness appear in him; 00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:46.300 his demeanor and conduct become good, 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:49.300 and the radiance and light of faith are seen upon him. 00:06:49.300 --> 00:06:52.360 We only said 00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:55.360 that the garment of taqwa means 00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:58.360 the soul and heart's awareness of that, 00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:01.360 because a garment is essentially a shield—that which is worn— 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:04.360 or a covering—that which one is clothed with, 00:07:04.360 --> 00:07:07.360 or covering one's body or part of it with it. 00:07:07.360 --> 00:07:10.490 So everyone who shields himself with something or covers himself with it, 00:07:10.490 --> 00:07:13.490 until he or its effect is seen upon him, 00:07:13.490 --> 00:07:16.490 is a wearer of it. 00:07:16.490 --> 00:07:19.490 That is why He, glorified be His praise, made men 00:07:19.490 --> 00:07:22.490 a garment for women, 00:07:22.490 --> 00:07:25.490 and they are a garment for them. 00:07:25.490 --> 00:07:29.509 And He made the night a garment for His servants. 00:07:29.509 --> 00:07:32.509 Every garment wears out, 00:07:32.509 --> 00:07:35.509 except the garment of taqwa. 00:07:35.509 --> 00:07:38.860 So what is your share of it? 00:07:38.860 --> 00:07:41.860 Al-Sa'di, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 00:07:41.860 --> 00:07:44.860 The garment of taqwa continues with the servant, 00:07:44.860 --> 00:07:47.860 and it neither wears out nor perishes. 00:07:47.860 --> 00:07:50.860 It is the beauty of the heart and the soul. 00:07:50.860 --> 00:07:53.860 As for outward clothing, 00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:56.860 its limit is to cover the outward private parts 00:07:56.860 --> 00:07:59.860 or to be an adornment for the person, 00:07:59.860 --> 00:08:02.860 and there is no benefit beyond that. 00:08:02.860 --> 00:08:05.860 Also, 00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:08.860 if this clothing is absent, 00:08:08.860 --> 00:08:11.860 one's outward private parts are exposed, 00:08:11.860 --> 00:08:14.860 which does not harm him if exposed out of necessity. 00:08:14.860 --> 00:08:17.860 But if the garment of taqwa is absent, 00:08:17.860 --> 00:08:20.860 then one's inward private parts are exposed, 00:08:20.860 --> 00:08:24.629 and one incurs disgrace and scandal. 00:08:25.629 --> 00:08:28.629 Your concern for the garment of taqwa 00:08:28.629 --> 00:08:31.629 does not justify your negligence 00:08:31.629 --> 00:08:34.629 regarding your outward clothing. 00:08:34.629 --> 00:08:37.629 And your concern for your outward clothing 00:08:37.629 --> 00:08:40.629 does not justify your neglect of the garment of taqwa 00:08:40.629 --> 00:08:43.700 and the increase of faith. 00:08:43.700 --> 00:08:46.759 So, is your clothing in front of women far 00:08:46.759 --> 00:08:49.759 from nakedness? 00:08:49.759 --> 00:08:53.019 And is your clothing outside the house...? 00:08:53.019 --> 00:08:56.019 Join us in a future meeting, if Allah wills. 00:08:56.019 --> 00:08:59.019 And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. 00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:02.879 The story of our mother Hawwa.
