In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
A summary of the Tafsir of al-Tabari.
Abridged by Dr. 'Aqil ibn Salim al-Shammari.
Surah al-Tur.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
By the Mount (al-Tur).
And by a Book inscribed.
On parchment unrolled.
And by the Frequented House (al-Bayt al-Ma'mur).
And by the Ceiling raised high.
And by the Sea filled with fire.
“Lo! the doom of thy Lord will surely come to pass;” (52:7)
“There is none that can ward it off.” (52:8)
It refers to the mountain known as al-Tur.
And a written Book.
Inscribed upon parchment that is unrolled.
And the House that is frequented by the multitude of those who visit it.
It is a house in the heavens, situated directly above the Ka'bah on earth.
Seventy thousand angels enter it every day.
And they never return to it again.
And the Ceiling raised high.
By "the ceiling" in this context, it means:
The sky.
And the sea whose waters are gathered and joined together.
Indeed, the punishment of your Lord, O Muhammad, will surely come to pass for the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection.
There is no one who can avert that punishment from them.
“On the day when the heaven will heave with (awful) heaving,” (52:9)
And the mountains will be set in motion.
“Lo! the doom of thy Lord will surely come to pass;” (52:7)
On the day when the sky will rotate and be overturned.
And the mountains will be moved from their places on the earth.
Becoming scattered dust.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
“Who play in talk of grave matters;” (52:12)
“The day when they are thrust with a (disdainful) thrust, into the fire of hell” (52:13)
“(And it is said unto them): This is the Fire which ye were wont to deny.” (52:14)
It is a valley in Hell that flows with pus and blood on the Day of Resurrection.
For those who deny that the punishment of Allah will occur.
Those who are in confusion and discord in this world, heedless.
Woe to the deniers on the day they are shoved and driven into the Fire with force and agitation.
And it will be said to them:
This is the Fire which you used to deny in the world.
That your Lord would punish you with it.
“Is this magic, or do ye not see?” (52:15)
“Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do.” (52:16)
You are only being recompensed for what you used to do.
Is this magic, O people, that you are witnessing now?
Or do you not perceive it and see it?
Taste the heat of this Fire.
So endure its pain and intensity, or do not endure it; it is all the same.
It makes no difference whether you are patient or impatient.
You are only being recompensed for your deeds.
And you are only being punished for your disobedience in the world.
Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and bliss.
“Happy because of what their Lord hath given them, and (because) their Lord hath warded off from them the torment of hell-fire.” (52:18)
Indeed, those who feared Allah by performing His obligatory duties and avoiding His prohibitions will be in gardens and bliss.
They will have abundant fruit, granted to them by Allah.
And their Lord will have removed from them the punishment with which He tormented the people of Hell.
Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do.
Reclining on thrones arranged in rows, and We will marry them to fair women with large, beautiful eyes.
Eat and drink, O people, in satisfaction.
You shall have no fear of harm or ill effect from what you eat and drink.
[This is] for the deeds you performed for the sake of Allah in the world.
Reclining on thrones that have been arranged in rows.
And We will pair the men among these righteous ones with spouses—fair women with large, beautiful eyes.
They are those whose whites of the eyes are intensely white, in contrast to the intense blackness of the iris.
And they are large-eyed, in their beauty and width.
“And they who believe and whose seed follow them in faith, We cause their seed to join them (there), and We deprive them of nought of their (life's) work. Every man is a pledge for that which he hath earned.” (52:21)
“And they who believe and whose seed follow them in faith, We cause their seed to join them (there), and We deprive them of nought of their (life's) work. Every man is a pledge for that which he hath earned.” (52:21)
Every person is held in pledge for what he has earned.
And those who believed in Allah and His Messenger.
And We joined their descendants with them—those who believed in Allah and His Messenger.
We will unite their descendants with those who believed in Paradise.
We will place them with them in their ranks, even if their deeds fall short.
As an honor from Us to their fathers.
And We will not diminish anything from the rewards of their deeds.
So that We would take it from them and give it to their children whom We have joined with them.
Every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned and done of good and evil.
No one among them will be held accountable for the sin of another.
Rather, one is only punished for his own sin.
“And We provide them with fruit and meat such as they desire.” (52:22)
They will exchange therein a cup [of wine] that causes no vain talk or sin.
And We will provide these people who believed in Allah and His Messenger.
“And We provide them with fruit and meat such as they desire.” (52:22)
They will pass the cup of drink among themselves.
There is no falsehood in Paradise, nor any act that causes its doer to sin.
