A new challenge: Who am I?
I am one of the senior Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
I embraced Islam early on in Makkah.
Then, I migrated to Abyssinia during the second migration.
Later, I joined the Prophet, peace be upon him, in Madinah.
I fought alongside him in his military campaigns.
I was proficient in reading and writing.
I was one of the scribes of the revelation.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, entrusted me with a task.
He sent me to bring his wife, Umm Habibah, may Allah be pleased with her, from the land of Abyssinia.
Towards the end of his life, he sent me with a message to the King of Egypt.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, passed away while I was in Egypt.
I loved the Prophet, peace be upon him, dearly.
I prioritized him over my own self.
One day, Al-Shifa' bint 'Abdullah entered our home.
She was my mother-in-law.
The time for prayer had arrived.
She found me at home.
She began to reproach me, saying:
"The prayer time has come, and you are still here?"
I said, "O aunt, do not blame me."
"I only had two garments."
"I would wrap myself in one and wear the other."
"The Prophet, peace be upon him, borrowed one of them from me to go out for prayer."
"So I gave him my outer garment."
"And I remained here."
I attended the military campaigns of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
Then, I participated in the wars against the apostates.
I conquered various lands during the caliphates of Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both.
When Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, intended to invade the Roman territories,
I went to him and asked him about it.
Abu Bakr said:
"Yes, I have been contemplating that."
"I have not disclosed it to anyone."
"How did you know about it?"
"You must have asked me about it for a reason."
I said, "Indeed, O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah."
I then recounted to him a vision I had seen in my sleep.
Its interpretation was the glad tidings of the conquest of the Levant (al-Sham).
In addition to the news of Abu Bakr's, may Allah be pleased with him, passing,
as his time was drawing near.
I then asked him to let me participate in the invasion of the Roman territories.
He granted me permission.
He appointed me as one of the commanders of the armies in the conquest of the Levant.
I conquered all of Jordan by force, except for Tiberias.
Its people made a peace treaty with me.
This was done under the instruction of Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him.
Then, when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed the caliphate,
he removed me from the leadership of the army.
I said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful, have I become incapable or have I betrayed the trust?"
He replied, "You have neither become incapable nor have you betrayed the trust."
I asked, "Then why did you remove me?"
He said, "I felt hesitant to appoint you while I found someone more capable than you."
I said, "Then clear my name before the people, O Commander of the Faithful."
He said, "Yes, I will do so."
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up.
He cleared my name before the people.
And he appointed me over regions in the Levant.
'Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him, delivered a sermon.
When the plague spread in the Levant,
he said, "This plague is a scourge."
"So disperse into these mountain passes and these valleys."
When that reached me,
I said, "Rather, it is the mercy of your Lord."
"And the supplication of your Prophet."
"And the death of the righteous before you."
"So gather together and do not disperse from it."
This reached 'Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him.
He said, "He has spoken the truth."
Then, my death came during the Plague of 'Amwas.
Where I and Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him, were afflicted with the plague on the same day.
And we departed this life on the same day.
