Pause and reflect on the Companions, the scholars, and the eminent figures.
A new challenge: who am I?
I am one of the younger Companions.
I embraced Islam early on in Makkah.
I was among the virtuous Companions.
I was one of the witnesses to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
I defected from the ranks of the polytheists at Badr.
I sought refuge with the Muslims.
I witnessed that battle alongside them.
I am counted among the Badriyyun (those who fought at Badr).
I did not miss any event with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
from the time I embraced Islam.
My brother is the noble Companion,
Abu Jandal, may Allah be pleased with him,
whom the Muslims returned after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
My father was one of the leaders of Makkah.
He was fiercely hostile toward the Muslims.
He intensified my torture once he learned of my Islam.
So, I migrated to Abyssinia in secret from him.
Then I returned to Makkah with those who returned,
after rumors spread that the Quraysh had embraced Islam.
When I entered upon my father,
he seized me and kept me bound.
He tortured me more severely than before,
which compelled me to show him
that I had abandoned the religion of Islam,
until he felt secure regarding me.
Yet my heart remained tranquil with faith.
When the Quraysh gathered their forces
to fight at Badr,
I went out with my father, feigning enthusiasm
to fight the Muslims.
I was entrusted with the provisions of the Quraysh
that they were taking with them to the battle.
This increased my father's admiration for me.
When the two armies met,
and I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
among the Muslims, I felt the greatest
joy, and then I took to my heels
toward them, shouting,
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
I fled from my father to the Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
On the day of the Conquest,
I sought safety for my father.
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,
will you grant my father safety?"
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
"Yes, he is safe by the security of Allah,
so let him come forth."
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said
to those around him,
"By my life,
Suhayl possesses intellect and honor.
Someone like Suhayl cannot be ignorant of Islam."
So I went out to my father
and told him what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had said.
My father replied,
"By Allah, he was always righteous,
both in his youth and in his maturity."
So my father embraced Islam, and his Islam was sincere.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
"I participated in the Wars of Apostasy,
and I was killed in the Battle of Yamamah."
So, who am I?
