WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.139
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:07.139 --> 00:00:11.740
With pens of longing and the ink of love,

00:00:11.740 --> 00:00:15.869
we record lines more precious than gold,

00:00:15.869 --> 00:00:20.870
in describing the Master of Creation, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:00:20.870 --> 00:00:31.019
The Prophetic characteristics (Shama'il).

00:00:31.019 --> 00:00:38.329
Chapter: What has been narrated regarding the physical creation of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

00:00:38.329 --> 00:00:41.329
It is narrated from 'Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:

00:00:41.329 --> 00:00:49.329
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, would turn his face and his conversation toward the most wicked person among the people,

00:00:49.329 --> 00:00:51.329
in order to win his heart thereby.

00:00:51.329 --> 00:00:55.420
He would turn his face and his conversation toward me,

00:00:55.420 --> 00:00:58.420
until I thought that I was the best of the people.

00:00:58.420 --> 00:01:01.420
So I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

00:01:01.420 --> 00:01:04.420
am I better, or is Abu Bakr?"

00:01:04.420 --> 00:01:06.549
He replied, "Abu Bakr."

00:01:06.549 --> 00:01:08.549
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

00:01:08.549 --> 00:01:10.549
am I better, or is 'Umar?"

00:01:10.549 --> 00:01:12.549
He replied, "'Umar."

00:01:12.549 --> 00:01:14.680
I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

00:01:14.680 --> 00:01:17.680
am I better, or is 'Uthman?"

00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:19.680
He replied, "'Uthman."

00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:24.709
When I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he confirmed the truth to me,

00:01:24.709 --> 00:01:28.709
I wished that I had not asked him.

00:01:28.709 --> 00:01:32.060
In this hadith,

00:01:32.060 --> 00:01:35.060
it is shown that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:01:35.060 --> 00:01:39.060
whenever someone harsh or rude came to his gathering,

00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:42.060
known for poor conduct and character,

00:01:42.060 --> 00:01:48.060
he would meet him, peace be upon him, with a cheerful face and kind treatment.

00:01:48.060 --> 00:01:52.060
He would turn his face, peace be upon him, toward him,

00:01:52.060 --> 00:01:55.060
and engage him in conversation.

00:01:55.060 --> 00:02:00.060
This is from the perfection of his wisdom, the nobility of his character, and the excellence of his companionship.

00:02:00.060 --> 00:02:02.120
His statement,

00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:07.120
"He would often turn his face and his conversation toward me,"

00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.219
"until I thought that I was the best of the people,"

00:02:10.219 --> 00:02:13.219
means that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:02:13.219 --> 00:02:15.219
would meet him with cheerfulness,

00:02:15.219 --> 00:02:17.219
and engage him in conversation,

00:02:17.219 --> 00:02:20.219
until he thought he was the best of the Companions,

00:02:20.219 --> 00:02:23.280
due to the frequency of his turning toward him.

00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:24.280
His statement,

00:02:24.280 --> 00:02:26.280
"I said, 'O Messenger of Allah,

00:02:26.280 --> 00:02:29.280
am I better, or is Abu Bakr?'"

00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:31.280
then he asked him about 'Umar,

00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:33.280
and then about 'Uthman.

00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:39.280
In this is an indication that it was established in the hearts of all the Companions

00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:42.280
that the best of them absolutely was Abu Bakr,

00:02:42.280 --> 00:02:43.280
then 'Umar,

00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:45.280
then 'Uthman,

00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:47.280
may Allah be pleased with them all.

00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:50.280
That is why he singled them out for mention,

00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:53.379
beginning with the best, then the next best.

00:02:53.379 --> 00:02:54.379
His statement,

00:02:54.379 --> 00:03:00.379
"When I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he confirmed the truth to me,"

00:03:00.379 --> 00:03:04.379
means he answered my question with a truthful answer and a word of reality,

00:03:04.379 --> 00:03:08.409
without flattery or compromising his principles.

00:03:08.409 --> 00:03:13.409
This is one of the methods of treating the diseases of the soul before they take hold,

00:03:13.409 --> 00:03:17.409
and curing the ailments of the heart before they worsen,

00:03:17.409 --> 00:03:20.409
by keeping the soul within its limits,

00:03:20.409 --> 00:03:22.599
and making it aware of its true standing.

00:03:22.599 --> 00:03:23.599
His statement,

00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:26.599
"I wished that I had not asked him,"

00:03:26.599 --> 00:03:31.599
means I loved and wished that I had not asked him, out of shyness before him,

00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:33.599
because of the error of my assumption

00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:36.889
that I was the most beloved of people to him.

00:03:36.889 --> 00:03:39.889
This hadith is narrated in a summarized form in the two Sahih collections.

00:03:39.889 --> 00:03:40.889
The wording is:

00:03:40.889 --> 00:03:43.889
From 'Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:03:43.889 --> 00:03:46.889
that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:03:46.889 --> 00:03:49.889
sent him on the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil.

00:03:49.889 --> 00:03:50.889
He said:

00:03:50.889 --> 00:03:52.889
"I came to him and said,

00:03:52.889 --> 00:03:55.889
'Which of the people is most beloved to you?'

00:03:55.889 --> 00:03:57.889
He said, 'A'ishah.'

00:03:57.889 --> 00:03:59.889
I said, 'From the men?'

00:03:59.889 --> 00:04:01.889
He said, 'Her father.'

00:04:01.889 --> 00:04:03.889
I said, 'Then who?'

00:04:03.889 --> 00:04:04.889
He said,

00:04:04.889 --> 00:04:07.889
'Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab,'

00:04:07.889 --> 00:04:09.889
and he counted other men."

00:04:09.889 --> 00:04:15.039
From Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:20.040
"I served the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, for ten years,

00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:23.040
and he never once said 'Uff' to me.

00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:27.069
He never said to me regarding something I did, 'Why did you do it?'

00:04:27.069 --> 00:04:31.069
nor regarding something I left, 'Why did you leave it?'

00:04:31.069 --> 00:04:34.170
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:04:34.170 --> 00:04:37.170
was the best of people in character.

00:04:37.170 --> 00:04:40.170
I have never touched silk or brocade,

00:04:40.170 --> 00:04:46.170
nor anything softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

00:04:46.170 --> 00:04:49.199
And I have never smelled musk or perfume

00:04:50.199 --> 00:04:55.199
that was sweeter than the sweat of the Prophet, peace be upon him."

00:04:55.199 --> 00:04:58.379
In this hadith,

00:04:58.379 --> 00:05:00.379
Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, informs us

00:05:00.379 --> 00:05:05.379
that he served the Prophet, peace be upon him, for ten years.

00:05:05.379 --> 00:05:08.379
This is a preface to what he is about to say,

00:05:08.379 --> 00:05:13.379
because ten years of service clearly reveals to the servant

00:05:13.379 --> 00:05:15.379
the character of the one he serves.

00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:16.420
His statement,

00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:19.420
"He never once said 'Uff' to me,"

00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:23.420
even though shortcomings and mistakes are inevitable,

00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:26.420
especially over such a long period.

00:05:26.420 --> 00:05:27.420
Yet,

00:05:27.420 --> 00:05:32.420
the Prophet, peace be upon him, never said 'Uff' to him once.

00:05:32.420 --> 00:05:36.449
"He never said to me regarding something I did, 'Why did you do it?'

00:05:36.449 --> 00:05:39.449
nor regarding something I left, 'Why did you leave it?'"

00:05:39.449 --> 00:05:42.449
This means that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:05:42.449 --> 00:05:45.449
would not reproach him for something he did,

00:05:45.449 --> 00:05:49.449
nor for something he was commanded to do but left undone.

00:05:49.449 --> 00:05:53.480
This relates to service and etiquette,

00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:57.480
not to the religious obligations.

00:05:57.480 --> 00:06:01.579
In this, there is also praise for Anas, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:06:01.579 --> 00:06:06.579
for he did not commit anything that would warrant an objection

00:06:06.579 --> 00:06:10.579
from the Prophet, peace be upon him, throughout that long period.

00:06:10.579 --> 00:06:11.699
His statement,

00:06:12.699 --> 00:06:15.699
"The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:06:15.699 --> 00:06:18.699
was the best of people in character,"

00:06:18.699 --> 00:06:21.699
is a summary after a detailed account.

00:06:21.699 --> 00:06:25.699
He, peace be upon him, was the best of people in character

00:06:25.699 --> 00:06:30.699
in his words, actions, manners, and dealings.

00:06:30.699 --> 00:06:32.699
His statement,

00:06:32.699 --> 00:06:35.699
"I have never touched silk or brocade, nor anything

00:06:35.699 --> 00:06:40.699
softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,"

00:06:40.699 --> 00:06:43.699
Khazz (silk/brocade) is a type of fabric

00:06:43.699 --> 00:06:46.699
made of silk and other materials.

00:06:46.699 --> 00:06:50.699
His palm, peace be upon him, was soft,

00:06:50.699 --> 00:06:53.699
indeed, it was softer than silk and brocade.

00:06:53.699 --> 00:06:57.699
And every soft thing that Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, touched.

00:06:57.699 --> 00:06:59.829
His statement,

00:07:02.829 --> 00:07:06.829
"that was sweeter than the sweat of the Prophet, peace be upon him,"

00:07:06.829 --> 00:07:11.829
for he, peace be upon him, was sweet-scented.

00:07:11.829 --> 00:07:16.829
This is among the things with which Allah, the Almighty, honored him.

00:07:16.829 --> 00:07:20.980
From Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:07:20.980 --> 00:07:24.980
from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:28.980
that there was a man with him who had traces of yellow (saffron) on him.

00:07:28.980 --> 00:07:33.019
He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:07:33.019 --> 00:07:38.050
would rarely confront anyone with something they disliked.

00:07:38.050 --> 00:07:41.050
When he stood up, he said to the people,

00:07:41.050 --> 00:07:45.050
"If you were to tell him to remove this yellow color."

00:07:45.050 --> 00:07:50.259
In this hadith, the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:53.259
saw a man who had traces of yellow on him.

00:07:53.259 --> 00:07:57.259
This yellow color might have been from saffron or something else,

00:07:57.259 --> 00:08:00.259
applied to clothing for adornment.

00:08:00.259 --> 00:08:04.329
His statement, "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:08:04.329 --> 00:08:08.329
would rarely confront anyone with something they disliked,"

00:08:08.329 --> 00:08:12.329
is from the perfection of his noble character, peace be upon him.

00:08:12.329 --> 00:08:16.329
He would command, forbid, advise, and teach,

00:08:16.329 --> 00:08:19.329
without confronting anyone with something they disliked,

00:08:19.329 --> 00:08:22.329
unless the interest of the situation required it.

00:08:22.329 --> 00:08:25.420
His statement, "When he stood up,"

00:08:25.420 --> 00:08:27.420
he said to the people,

00:08:27.420 --> 00:08:30.420
meaning the Prophet, peace be upon him, said

00:08:30.420 --> 00:08:33.419
to his Companions present in the gathering,

00:08:33.419 --> 00:08:36.419
"If you were to tell him to remove this yellow color,"

00:08:36.419 --> 00:08:38.419
meaning to leave it off.

00:08:38.419 --> 00:08:42.419
He did not confront him with that, peace be upon him,

00:08:42.419 --> 00:08:46.710
but rather ordered some of the people to alert him.

00:08:46.710 --> 00:08:48.710
This hadith is weak,

00:08:48.710 --> 00:08:50.710
but its meaning is correct.

00:08:50.710 --> 00:08:52.710
For in the Sunan of Abu Dawud,

00:08:52.710 --> 00:08:55.710
from 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said:

00:08:55.710 --> 00:08:58.710
The Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:08:58.710 --> 00:09:01.710
when something reached him about a man,

00:09:01.710 --> 00:09:04.710
he would not say, "What is the matter with so-and-so that he says..."

00:09:04.710 --> 00:09:08.710
But he would say, peace be upon him,

00:09:08.710 --> 00:09:12.710
"What is the matter with some people that they say such-and-such?"

00:09:12.710 --> 00:09:14.710
Meaning he would not explicitly name him,

00:09:14.710 --> 00:09:16.710
but would say,

00:09:16.710 --> 00:09:19.710
"What is the matter with some people that they say such-and-such?"

00:09:19.710 --> 00:09:22.710
as a precaution against confrontation with something disliked,

00:09:22.710 --> 00:09:25.710
while achieving the intended purpose without it.

00:09:25.710 --> 00:09:31.340
From 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said:

00:09:31.340 --> 00:09:34.340
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

00:09:34.340 --> 00:09:37.340
was neither foul-mouthed nor prone to foul language,

00:09:37.340 --> 00:09:40.340
nor was he loud in the marketplaces,

00:09:40.340 --> 00:09:43.340
nor did he repay evil with evil,

00:09:43.340 --> 00:09:45.340
but he would pardon and forgive.

00:09:45.340 --> 00:09:49.009
"Fuhsh" (foulness)

00:09:49.009 --> 00:09:51.009
is everything that exceeds its proper measure

00:09:51.009 --> 00:09:53.009
until it becomes reprehensible.

00:09:53.009 --> 00:09:56.070
The "mutafahish" is one who intentionally does that,

00:09:56.070 --> 00:09:59.070
does it frequently, and affects it.

00:09:59.070 --> 00:10:01.169
In this hadith,

00:10:01.169 --> 00:10:04.169
'A'ishah negated from the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:10:04.169 --> 00:10:06.169
the possession of foulness,

00:10:06.169 --> 00:10:09.169
and the uttering of it, whether by nature or by affectation.

00:10:09.169 --> 00:10:11.200
Her statement,

00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:14.200
"nor was he loud in the marketplaces,"

00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:17.200
meaning shouting and clamoring.

00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:20.200
The "sakhab" is one who raises his voice,

00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:22.200
and it is blameworthy,

00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:24.200
especially in the marketplaces,

00:10:24.200 --> 00:10:27.200
which are gathering places for people of every kind.

00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:29.200
Her statement,

00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:32.200
"nor did he repay evil with evil,"

00:10:32.200 --> 00:10:34.200
means if someone did him wrong,

00:10:34.200 --> 00:10:36.200
he would not counter his evil

00:10:36.200 --> 00:10:39.200
with a similar evil,

00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:41.200
even though that is permissible,

00:10:41.200 --> 00:10:43.200
according to the saying of the Almighty:

00:10:43.200 --> 00:10:47.200
“The guerdon of an ill-deed is an ill the like thereof. But whosoever pardoneth and amendeth, his wage is the affair of Allah. Lo! He loveth not wrong-doers.” (42:40)

00:10:47.200 --> 00:10:49.230
Her statement,

00:10:49.230 --> 00:10:51.230
Rather, he pardons and overlooks.

00:10:51.230 --> 00:10:54.230
This means he acts in the best and most perfect manner,

00:10:54.230 --> 00:10:57.230
which is pardoning and overlooking.

00:10:57.230 --> 00:11:00.230
Pardoning (al-'afw) is to overlook the one who has erred

00:11:00.230 --> 00:11:02.230
and to refrain from punishing them.

00:11:02.230 --> 00:11:05.230
Overlooking (al-safh) is to cease all reproach,

00:11:05.230 --> 00:11:07.230
and it is more profound than mere pardoning.

00:11:07.230 --> 00:11:10.230
A person may pardon someone yet not overlook their fault.

00:11:10.230 --> 00:11:12.419
Allah the Almighty said:

00:11:12.419 --> 00:11:14.419
"So pardon them and overlook [their faults]."

00:11:14.419 --> 00:11:18.419
"Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good."

00:11:21.250 --> 00:11:24.250
On the authority of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said:

00:11:24.250 --> 00:11:27.250
"The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, never struck

00:11:27.250 --> 00:11:30.250
anything with his hand ever,

00:11:30.250 --> 00:11:33.250
except when striving in the cause of Allah."

00:11:33.250 --> 00:11:36.250
"He never struck a servant nor a woman."

00:11:36.250 --> 00:11:39.460
In this hadith,

00:11:39.460 --> 00:11:43.460
the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

00:11:43.460 --> 00:11:46.460
"The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, never struck

00:11:46.460 --> 00:11:48.460
anything with his hand ever,"

00:11:48.460 --> 00:11:51.529
meaning neither a human being nor anything else,

00:11:51.529 --> 00:11:54.529
"except when striving in the cause of Allah."

00:11:54.529 --> 00:11:58.529
This does not refer only to military expeditions against the disbelievers,

00:11:58.529 --> 00:12:02.529
but it also includes the implementation of legal punishments (hudud), disciplinary measures (ta'azir), and other such matters.

00:12:02.529 --> 00:12:04.529
As for her statement,

00:12:04.529 --> 00:12:07.529
"nor did he strike a servant or a woman,"

00:12:07.529 --> 00:12:09.529
this is a specification after a generalization,

00:12:09.529 --> 00:12:12.529
because they are already included in what preceded it.

00:12:12.529 --> 00:12:16.529
However, the servant and the woman were singled out for mention

00:12:16.529 --> 00:12:18.529
out of concern for their status,

00:12:18.529 --> 00:12:22.529
or because they are the ones most commonly subjected to striking in general practice.

00:12:22.529 --> 00:12:24.529
Thus, it is recommended to pardon them,

00:12:24.529 --> 00:12:28.529
acting against one's own ego and suppressing rage.

00:12:28.529 --> 00:12:33.940
On the authority of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said:

00:12:33.940 --> 00:12:37.940
"I never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:12:37.940 --> 00:12:40.940
take revenge for a wrong done to him ever,

00:12:40.940 --> 00:12:44.940
as long as the sacred limits of Allah were not violated.

00:12:44.940 --> 00:12:48.940
But if the sacred limits of Allah the Almighty were violated,

00:12:48.940 --> 00:12:52.940
he would be among the most furious of people regarding that.

00:12:52.940 --> 00:12:54.940
And he was never given a choice between two matters

00:12:54.940 --> 00:12:56.940
but that he chose the easier of the two,

00:12:56.940 --> 00:12:59.940
as long as it was not a sin."

00:12:59.940 --> 00:13:03.309
In this hadith,

00:13:03.309 --> 00:13:07.309
the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

00:13:07.309 --> 00:13:11.309
"I never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:13:11.309 --> 00:13:12.309
taking revenge,"

00:13:12.309 --> 00:13:14.309
meaning retaliating,

00:13:14.309 --> 00:13:16.309
"for a wrong done to him ever."

00:13:16.309 --> 00:13:19.500
For the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:13:19.500 --> 00:13:22.500
would not become angry for his own sake, nor would he seek revenge for himself.

00:13:22.500 --> 00:13:24.500
Her statement,

00:13:24.500 --> 00:13:28.500
"as long as the sacred limits of Allah the Almighty were not violated,"

00:13:28.500 --> 00:13:33.500
means as long as nothing that Allah the Almighty has forbidden to His servants was committed.

00:13:33.500 --> 00:13:37.539
"But if the sacred limits of Allah the Almighty were violated,

00:13:37.539 --> 00:13:40.539
he would be among the most furious of people regarding that,"

00:13:40.539 --> 00:13:44.539
meaning he would be the most furious for the sake of Allah the Almighty.

00:13:44.539 --> 00:13:49.539
This indicates that it is obligatory to show zeal, anger, and disapproval

00:13:49.539 --> 00:13:52.539
when the sacred limits of Allah are violated,

00:13:52.539 --> 00:13:55.629
and it is not permissible to remain silent about such things.

00:13:55.629 --> 00:13:56.629
Her statement,

00:13:56.629 --> 00:14:00.629
"he was never given a choice between two matters but that he chose the easier of the two,

00:14:00.629 --> 00:14:02.629
as long as it was not a sin,"

00:14:02.629 --> 00:14:08.629
means that if the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was given a choice between two matters to perform one of them,

00:14:08.629 --> 00:14:13.629
he would choose the easier of the two,

00:14:13.629 --> 00:14:17.759
provided it was not among the matters that lead to sin.

00:14:17.759 --> 00:14:20.759
As for matters that lead to sin,

00:14:20.759 --> 00:14:27.909
the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would avoid them and be wary of them.

00:14:27.909 --> 00:14:30.909
On the authority of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said:

00:14:30.909 --> 00:14:36.909
"A man asked for permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while I was with him,

00:14:36.909 --> 00:14:38.909
and he said:

00:14:38.909 --> 00:14:40.909
'What an evil son of the tribe,'

00:14:40.909 --> 00:14:42.909
or 'brother of the tribe.'

00:14:42.909 --> 00:14:43.909
Then he gave him permission.

00:14:43.909 --> 00:14:45.909
When he entered,

00:14:45.909 --> 00:14:47.909
he spoke to him gently.

00:14:47.909 --> 00:14:49.909
When he left,

00:14:49.909 --> 00:14:51.909
I said: 'O Messenger of Allah,

00:14:51.909 --> 00:14:53.909
you said what you said,

00:14:53.909 --> 00:14:55.909
then you spoke to him gently.'

00:14:55.909 --> 00:14:56.909
He replied:

00:14:56.909 --> 00:14:58.909
'O 'A'ishah,

00:14:58.909 --> 00:15:00.909
indeed, among the worst of people

00:15:00.909 --> 00:15:02.909
is the one whom people leave,

00:15:02.909 --> 00:15:04.909
or whom people avoid,

00:15:04.909 --> 00:15:06.909
out of fear of his obscenity.'"

00:15:06.909 --> 00:15:10.159
In this hadith,

00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:13.159
'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, says:

00:15:13.159 --> 00:15:19.159
"A man asked for permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while I was with him."

00:15:19.159 --> 00:15:20.159
It has been said

00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:23.159
that this man was 'Uyaynah Ibn Hisn,

00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:25.159
and he had not yet embraced Islam at that time,

00:15:25.159 --> 00:15:28.159
even though he had outwardly displayed Islam.

00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:33.159
He asked for permission to enter upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in his house,

00:15:33.159 --> 00:15:37.159
and the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

00:15:37.159 --> 00:15:39.159
"What an evil son of the tribe,"

00:15:39.159 --> 00:15:41.159
or "brother of the tribe."

00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:44.159
This refers to the tribe.

00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:47.190
Meaning: what an evil man from that tribe.

00:15:47.190 --> 00:15:49.190
In this is a warning

00:15:49.190 --> 00:15:52.220
regarding the coarseness this man possessed.

00:15:52.220 --> 00:15:55.220
Then he gave him permission to enter.

00:15:55.220 --> 00:15:57.220
When he entered,

00:15:57.220 --> 00:15:59.220
he spoke to him gently,

00:15:59.220 --> 00:16:02.220
meaning that he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:16:02.220 --> 00:16:05.220
began to speak to him with soft words,

00:16:05.220 --> 00:16:08.220
to reconcile his heart and the hearts of those like him to Islam.

00:16:08.220 --> 00:16:10.220
Her statement,

00:16:11.220 --> 00:16:13.220
"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah,

00:16:13.220 --> 00:16:15.220
you said what you said,

00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:17.220
then you spoke to him gently,'"

00:16:17.220 --> 00:16:19.220
suggests she was surprised by the state of the man

00:16:19.220 --> 00:16:23.220
whom the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had described,

00:16:23.220 --> 00:16:25.220
yet then spoke to him gently,

00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:27.220
meeting him with cheerfulness,

00:16:27.220 --> 00:16:29.220
an open face,

00:16:29.220 --> 00:16:31.220
and a warm welcome.

00:16:31.220 --> 00:16:33.220
When I asked him about that,

00:16:33.220 --> 00:16:34.220
he said:

00:16:34.220 --> 00:16:35.220
"O 'A'ishah,

00:16:35.220 --> 00:16:37.220
indeed, among the worst of people

00:16:37.220 --> 00:16:38.220
is the one whom people leave,

00:16:38.220 --> 00:16:39.220
or whom people avoid,

00:16:39.220 --> 00:16:41.220
out of fear of his obscenity."

00:16:41.220 --> 00:16:44.220
Meaning: because of his ugly speech and actions.

00:16:44.220 --> 00:16:46.220
So, someone like this,

00:16:46.220 --> 00:16:48.220
if he is met without gentleness,

00:16:48.220 --> 00:16:51.220
great and reprehensible things might result from him.

00:16:51.220 --> 00:16:52.220
Therefore, it is better

00:16:52.220 --> 00:16:54.220
to meet him with kindness,

00:16:54.220 --> 00:16:57.220
repelling [evil] with that which is better,

00:16:57.220 --> 00:16:59.220
and protecting oneself from his evil.

00:16:59.220 --> 00:17:03.919
On the authority of Muhammad Ibn al-Munkadir, he said:

00:17:03.919 --> 00:17:08.920
"I heard Jabir Ibn 'Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, saying:

00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:13.920
'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was never asked for anything

00:17:13.920 --> 00:17:17.650
and said no.'"

00:17:17.650 --> 00:17:18.650
In this hadith,

00:17:18.650 --> 00:17:22.650
there is a demonstration of the generosity of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:17:22.650 --> 00:17:24.650
For he was never asked for anything

00:17:24.650 --> 00:17:26.650
and said no,

00:17:26.650 --> 00:17:27.650
meaning "I will not give it."

00:17:27.650 --> 00:17:28.650
Rather,

00:17:28.650 --> 00:17:30.650
he would either give,

00:17:30.650 --> 00:17:32.650
or apologize and pray for them,

00:17:32.650 --> 00:17:35.710
or promise them what they wished for.

00:17:35.710 --> 00:17:39.710
On the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, he said:

00:17:39.710 --> 00:17:43.710
"The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was merciful,

00:17:43.710 --> 00:17:45.710
and no one would come to him

00:17:45.710 --> 00:17:49.710
but that he would promise them and fulfill it if he had the means.

00:17:49.710 --> 00:17:51.740
Once, the prayer was called,

00:17:51.740 --> 00:17:53.740
and a Bedouin came to him,

00:17:53.740 --> 00:17:54.740
took hold of his garment,

00:17:54.740 --> 00:17:56.740
and said:

00:17:56.740 --> 00:17:58.740
'I still have a small need remaining,

00:17:58.740 --> 00:18:01.740
and I fear I will forget it.'

00:18:01.740 --> 00:18:02.740
So he stood with him

00:18:02.740 --> 00:18:04.740
until he finished his need,

00:18:04.740 --> 00:18:07.740
then he came and prayed."

00:18:07.740 --> 00:18:13.019
On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, he said:

00:18:13.019 --> 00:18:16.019
"The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:18:16.019 --> 00:18:19.019
was the most generous of people in doing good,

00:18:19.019 --> 00:18:22.019
and he was at his most generous during the month of Ramadan,

00:18:22.019 --> 00:18:24.019
when he would meet Jibril.

00:18:24.019 --> 00:18:26.019
Jibril would come to him

00:18:26.019 --> 00:18:28.019
and review the Qur'an with him.

00:18:28.019 --> 00:18:31.019
When Jibril met him,

00:18:31.019 --> 00:18:34.019
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:18:34.019 --> 00:18:38.019
was more generous in doing good than the sent-forth wind."

00:18:38.019 --> 00:18:41.339
In this hadith,

00:18:41.339 --> 00:18:44.339
there is a description of the generosity of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:18:44.339 --> 00:18:46.339
and his giving and spending.

00:18:46.339 --> 00:18:49.339
For he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:18:49.339 --> 00:18:51.339
was the most generous of people in doing good,

00:18:51.339 --> 00:18:55.339
meaning the most generous and giving of people in goodness.

00:18:55.339 --> 00:18:56.339
His statement,

00:18:56.339 --> 00:19:00.339
"and he was at his most generous during the month of Ramadan,"

00:19:00.339 --> 00:19:04.339
means he was more generous and giving in Ramadan

00:19:04.339 --> 00:19:07.339
than in other months and days,

00:19:07.339 --> 00:19:10.339
due to the excellence of that time.

00:19:10.339 --> 00:19:11.339
His statement,

00:19:11.339 --> 00:19:15.339
"Jibril would come to him and review the Qur'an with him,"

00:19:15.339 --> 00:19:17.339
means Jibril, peace be upon him,

00:19:17.339 --> 00:19:19.339
would come in Ramadan,

00:19:19.339 --> 00:19:24.339
and the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would recite the Qur'an to him.

00:19:24.339 --> 00:19:27.339
The "review" (al-'ard) is recitation from memory.

00:19:27.339 --> 00:19:30.339
This would be repeated every Ramadan.

00:19:30.339 --> 00:19:36.339
This shows the importance of a memorizer reviewing their memorization with others to solidify it,

00:19:36.339 --> 00:19:39.339
especially in Ramadan, the month of the Qur'an.

00:19:39.339 --> 00:19:43.339
In another narration, "he would study the Qur'an with him."

00:19:43.339 --> 00:19:47.339
"Studying" (al-mudarasah) implies a mutual action from both sides.

00:19:47.339 --> 00:19:52.339
This indicates that each of them would sometimes recite and the other would listen.

00:19:52.339 --> 00:19:54.559
His statement,

00:19:54.559 --> 00:19:56.559
"When Jibril met him,

00:19:56.559 --> 00:19:59.559
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:19:59.559 --> 00:20:02.559
was more generous in doing good than the sent-forth wind."

00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:05.589
The wind can be sent with good,

00:20:05.589 --> 00:20:08.589
and it can be sent with punishment.

00:20:08.589 --> 00:20:10.589
The intent by "the wind" here

00:20:10.589 --> 00:20:13.589
is that which Allah the Almighty sent with good,

00:20:13.589 --> 00:20:15.589
It is like the rain.

00:20:15.589 --> 00:20:18.589
When the wind carries it, goodness spreads everywhere.

00:20:18.589 --> 00:20:20.589
The intended meaning here

00:20:20.589 --> 00:20:25.589
is that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was swifter in his generosity than that wind.

00:20:25.589 --> 00:20:30.779
On the authority of Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

00:20:30.779 --> 00:20:36.779
The Prophet, peace be upon him, would not store anything for the morrow.

00:20:36.779 --> 00:20:40.089
In this hadith,

00:20:40.089 --> 00:20:43.089
it is noted that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:20:43.089 --> 00:20:46.089
would not store anything for his own sake,

00:20:46.089 --> 00:20:49.089
owing to his immense generosity and his reliance upon his Lord.

00:20:49.089 --> 00:20:53.089
However, he would set aside provisions for his family and children.

00:20:53.089 --> 00:20:56.119
It has been narrated from him, peace be upon him,

00:20:56.119 --> 00:21:01.119
that which indicates he would store a year’s worth of provisions for his family.

00:21:01.119 --> 00:21:04.150
For it is narrated from ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,

00:21:04.150 --> 00:21:07.150
that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:21:07.150 --> 00:21:09.150
would sell the dates of the Banu al-Nadir,

00:21:09.150 --> 00:21:13.150
and reserve the provisions for his family for the year.

00:21:13.150 --> 00:21:17.430
And on the authority of ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her:

00:21:17.430 --> 00:21:20.430
The Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:21:20.430 --> 00:21:22.430
would accept gifts,

00:21:22.430 --> 00:21:24.430
and would reward the giver in return.

00:21:24.430 --> 00:21:28.000
In this hadith,

00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:31.000
there is an explanation that the Prophet, peace be upon him,

00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:35.000
would accept a gift and would not turn it away.

00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:38.000
His acceptance of a gift is a form of generosity,

00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:41.000
and a facet of noble character,

00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:43.000
through which hearts are won over.

00:21:43.000 --> 00:21:46.000
As for her statement, "and would reward the giver in return,"

00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:49.000
it means he would give the person who presented the gift something in exchange.

00:21:49.000 --> 00:21:53.000
The intent behind "reward" here is recompense.

00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:58.599
The minimum of which is something equal in value to the gift.

00:21:58.599 --> 00:22:01.599
The hadith continues, if Allah wills.

00:22:01.599 --> 00:22:03.599
And Allah knows best.

00:22:03.599 --> 00:22:06.599
May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad,

00:22:06.599 --> 00:22:09.599
and upon all his family and companions.
