we remain in goodness as long as Allah grants you victory over your enemy.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to him,

"Woe to you!

What drove you to say what you said?"

He replied, "O Messenger of Allah,

if I said anything of that, you are well aware of it,

but I did not say any of that."

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gathered them,

and they were twelve men.

He informed them of what they had said, peace be upon him,

and of their speech, their secrets, and their public words.

Allah, glory be to Him, had revealed this to His Prophet,

and taught him what they had done.

They are the ones of whom Allah said:

“They swear by Allah that they said nothing (wrong), yet they did say the word of disbelief, and did disbelieve after their Surrender (to Allah). And they purposed that which they could not attain, and they sought revenge only that Allah by His messenger should enrich them of His bounty. If they repent it will be better for them; and if they turn away, Allah will afflict them with a painful doom in the world and the Hereafter, and they have no protecting friend nor helper in the earth.” (9:74)
