A man came to the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and spoke ill of another man to him. The Commander of the Faithful replied, "We shall investigate what you have said; if you are truthful, we will despise you, and if you are lying, we will punish you. Or, if you wish, we will overlook it and let you go." The man said, "Overlook it, O Commander of the Faithful."

A man also came to ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) and mentioned something to him about another person. ‘Umar said, "If you wish, we will examine your claim; if you are lying, you fall under the scope of the verse: 'If a transgressor brings you news...' and if you are truthful, you fall under the scope of the verse: 'A slanderer, going about with malicious gossip.'"
