refusing to release me until I renounced 00:13:24.659 --> 00:13:27.659 the religion of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:13:27.659 --> 00:13:30.659 But I did not yield to them, so they struck me 00:13:30.659 --> 00:13:33.659 on the head until I lost my sight. 00:13:33.659 --> 00:13:36.659 The polytheists said: "Al-Lat and al-'Uzza 00:13:36.659 --> 00:13:39.659 have blinded her because of her disbelief in them." 00:13:39.659 --> 00:13:42.659 I said to them: "What do al-Lat 00:13:42.659 --> 00:13:45.659 and al-'Uzza know of who worships them? 00:13:45.659 --> 00:13:49.659 They are merely two idols that can neither benefit nor harm! 00:13:49.659 --> 00:13:52.659 This is solely by the decree of Allah, 00:13:52.659 --> 00:13:56.659 and my Lord is able to restore my sight 00:17:03.409 --> 00:17:06.410 the revelation of the hijab, so I exclaimed: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un!" 00:17:06.410 --> 00:17:09.410 “Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! we are Muslims to perform 'Umrah 00:24:17.740 --> 00:24:20.740 and visiting the Sacred House. 00:24:20.740 --> 00:24:23.740 Then Quraysh sent me to negotiate an agreement with the Prophet, 00:24:23.740 --> 00:24:26.740 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to postpone the Umrah 00:24:26.740 --> 00:24:29.740 and conclude a peace treaty between Quraysh 00:24:29.740 --> 00:24:32.779 and the Muslims. 00:24:32.779 --> 00:24:35.779 When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw me, 00:24:35.779 --> 00:24:39.579 he said, "Your matter has become easy (sahul)." 00:24:39.579 --> 00:24:42.579 And when the Muslims advanced to conquer Mecca, 00:24:42.579 --> 00:24:45.579 I feared for my life, 00:24:45.579 --> 00:24:48.579 so my son secured a guarantee of safety for me from the Prophet (peace be upon him). 00:24:48.579 --> 00:24:51.579 So I came to him 00:24:51.579 --> 00:24:54.579 and embraced Islam before him. 00:24:54.579 --> 00:24:57.579 Afterward, I went out alongside the Muslims, 00:24:58.579 --> 00:25:01.579 and on that day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave me 00:25:01.579 --> 00:25:04.579 one hundred camels from the spoils of the battle 00:25:04.579 --> 00:25:07.579 to reconcile my heart to the faith. 00:25:07.579 --> 00:25:10.579 Thereupon, my practice of Islam became excellent, 00:25:10.579 --> 00:25:13.579 and thereafter I engaged extensively in prayer, fasting, and charity, 00:25:13.579 --> 00:25:16.579 to the point that my complexion grew pale and altered, 00:25:16.579 --> 00:25:19.579 and I used to weep profusely 00:25:19.579 --> 00:25:22.579 whenever I heard the Qur'an. 00:25:22.579 --> 00:25:26.410 After the death of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:25:26.410 --> 00:25:29.410 the Arabian Peninsula was thrown into turmoil, 00:25:29.410 --> 00:25:32.410 chaos spread across its regions, 00:25:32.410 --> 00:25:35.410 and many apostatized from the religion of Islam. 00:25:35.410 --> 00:25:38.410 Mecca was not immune to this, 00:25:38.410 --> 00:25:41.410 so what I did 00:25:41.410 --> 00:25:44.410 was to stand up and deliver a sermon to the people of Mecca— 00:25:44.410 --> 00:25:47.410 an eloquent sermon 00:25:47.410 --> 00:25:50.410 whose content resembled that of Abu Bakr 00:25:50.410 --> 00:25:53.410 as-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:25:53.410 --> 00:25:56.410 when he delivered it to the Ansar on the day of Saqifah. 00:25:56.410 --> 00:25:59.410 As a result, Quraysh remained steadfast upon Islam. 00:25:59.410 --> 00:26:04.420 With the beginning of the Islamic conquests, 00:26:04.420 --> 00:26:07.420 I set out with my entire family 00:26:07.420 --> 00:26:10.420 to participate in the Islamic conquest of the Levant (ash-Sham). 00:26:10.420 --> 00:26:13.420 On the day of Yarmuk, 00:26:13.420 --> 00:26:16.460 I was the commander of one of the Muslim battalions in the battle. 00:26:16.460 --> 00:26:19.460 I remained in the Levant 00:26:19.460 --> 00:26:22.460 until death came him) bought me 00:27:54.950 --> 00:27:57.950 and freed me, 00:27:57.950 --> 00:28:00.950 saying, "If you wish, you may rejoin your people, 00:28:00.950 --> 00:28:03.950 or if you wish, you may remain among us, the Ahl al-Bayt." 00:28:03.950 --> 00:28:06.980 So I chose to remain with him. 00:28:06.980 --> 00:28:09.980 I accompanied him in travel and in residence, 00:28:09.980 --> 00:28:12.980 never body had grown lean. 00:28:30.039 --> 00:28:33.039 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked me, 00:28:33.039 --> 00:28:36.039 "What has changed your color? 00:28:36.039 --> 00:28:39.039 What has happened to you?" 00:28:39.039 --> 00:28:42.039 I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:28:42.039 --> 00:28:45.039 I have no ailment or physical pain, 00:28:45.039 --> 00:28:48.039 except that whenever I do not see you, 00:28:48.039 --> 00:28:51.039 I miss you intensely 00:28:51.039 --> 00:28:54.099 and feel severe loneliness until I meet you. 00:28:54.099 --> 00:28:57.099 Then I remembered the Hereafter; 00:28:58.140 --> 00:29:01.140 for I know you will be raised with the Prophets, 00:29:01.140 --> 00:29:04.140 whereas I, even if I enter Paradise, 00:29:04.140 --> 00:29:07.140 will be in a station lower than yours, 00:29:07.140 --> 00:29:10.140 and if I do not enter Paradise, 00:29:10.140 --> 00:29:13.140 then I will never see you at all." 00:29:13.140 --> 00:29:16.299 Thereupon, Allah Almighty revealed His words: 00:29:16.299 --> 00:29:19.299 “Whoso obeyeth Allah and the messenger, they are with those unto whom Allah hath shown favour, of the prophets and the saints and the martyrs and the righteous. One day, 00:32:22.250 --> 00:32:25.250 I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) 00:32:25.250 --> 00:32:28.250 with gifts from the desert, 00:32:29.250 --> 00:32:32.250 left the gifts for him, 00:32:32.250 --> 00:32:35.410 and went to the marketplace. 00:32:35.410 --> 00:32:38.410 When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned 00:32:38.410 --> 00:32:41.410 to his home and saw the gifts, 00:32:41.410 --> 00:32:44.410 he knew that I had arrived in Medina, 00:32:44.410 --> 00:32:47.410 so he came to the market looking for me. 00:32:47.410 --> 00:32:50.410 He found me while I was buying some goods for myself, 00:32:50.410 --> 00:32:53.410 and he embraced me from behind while I could not see him. 00:32:53.410 --> 00:32:56.410 I said, "Let me go! Who is this?" 00:32:56.410 --> 00:32:59.410 while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) 00:32:59.410 --> 00:33:02.410 did not answer me. 00:33:02.410 --> 00:33:05.410 So I turned around sharply and realized that he was 00:33:05.410 --> 00:33:08.410 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:33:08.410 --> 00:33:11.410 I then began pressing my back against his chest, 00:33:11.410 --> 00:33:14.410 seeking his blessing. 00:33:14.410 --> 00:33:17.410 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then began 00:33:17.410 --> 00:33:20.410 calling out to the people, 00:33:20.410 --> 00:33:23.410 "Who will buy this slave from me?" 00:33:23.410 --> 00:33:26.440 I said, "O Messenger of Allah, 00:33:26.440 --> 00:33:29.440 then, by Allah, you will find me unsellable!" 00:33:29.440 --> 00:33:32.440 But the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 00:33:32.440 --> 00:33:35.440 "However, 00:33:35.440 --> 00:33:38.440 in the sight of Allah, you are precious, 00:33:38.440 --> 00:33:41.700 and you are not unsellable." So, who am I? 00:33:52.440 --> 00:34:00.339 The answer: 00:34:00.339 --> 00:34:03.339 Zahir Ibn Haram, may Allah be pleased with him. 00:34:24.750 --> 00:34:33.639 Pause and get to know the Companions, 00:34:33.639 --> 00:34:36.639 the scholars, and the prominent figures. 00:34:39.829 --> 00:34:42.829 A new challenge: 00:34:42.829 --> 00:34:49.219 Who am I? 00:34:49.219 --> 00:34:52.219 I am one of the Companions from the leaders of the Ansar, 00:34:52.219 --> 00:34:55.219 and one of their representatives (nuqaba') at the Pledge of al-'Aqabah. 00:34:55.219 --> 00:34:58.219 I was proficient in writing during the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah), 00:34:58.219 --> 00:35:01.219 and skilled in swimming and archery; 00:35:01.219 --> 00:35:04.219 for this reason, they used to nickname me 00:35:04.219 --> 00:35:08.179 "al-Kamil" (the Complete One). 00:35:08.179 --> 00:35:11.179 I was the only one among the Ansar 00:35:11.179 --> 00:35:14.179 who suffered the same persecution as that suffered by 00:35:14.179 --> 00:35:17.179 the Emigrants (Muhajirun) in Mecca. 00:35:17.179 --> 00:35:20.179 That was because Quraysh dispatched their horsemen 00:35:20.179 --> 00:35:23.179 to pursue the delegation from Medina after the Hajj season 00:35:23.179 --> 00:35:26.179 in which we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:35:26.179 --> 00:35:29.179 They caught no one except me; 00:35:29.179 --> 00:35:32.179 they seized me, tied my hands to my neck, 00:35:32.179 --> 00:35:35.179 and brought me back to Mecca, 00:35:35.179 --> 00:35:38.179 where they gathered around me, beating me 00:35:38.179 --> 00:35:41.179 and inflicting whatever torture they wished upon me. 00:35:41.179 --> 00:35:44.179 Then a man from among them drew me aside, 00:35:44.179 --> 00:35:47.179 as though he took pity on me, 00:35:47.179 --> 00:35:50.179 and said, "Woe to you! Do you not have anyone in Mecca 00:35:50.179 --> 00:35:53.179 whose protection you can claim?" 00:35:53.179 --> 00:35:56.179 I said, "No, except that al-'As Ibn Wa'il 00:35:56.179 --> 00:35:59.179 used to visit us in Medina, and we would honor and host him." 00:35:59.179 --> 00:36:02.179 Then a man from the group said, 00:36:02.179 --> 00:36:05.179 "He has mentioned my cousin, so he is under my protection; 00:36:05.179 --> 00:36:08.179 by Allah, none of you shall touch him!" 00:36:08.179 --> 00:36:12.269 So they ceased tormenting me. 00:36:12.269 --> 00:36:15.269 In Medina, I placed all my wealth 00:36:15.269 --> 00:36:18.269 at the service of Islam and in honoring the Muslims. 00:36:18.269 --> 00:36:21.369 A man from among the Ansar 00:36:21.369 --> 00:36:24.369 would typically take home one of the Emigrants (Muhajirun), 00:36:24.369 --> 00:36:27.369 or two, or three, 00:36:27.369 --> 00:36:30.369 whereas I would take all the People of the Suffah to my home 00:36:30.369 --> 00:36:33.369 and host them generously, 00:36:33.369 --> 00:36:36.369 and they numbered between seventy and eighty men. 00:36:36.369 --> 00:36:39.429 I used to prepare meat broth (tharid) 00:36:39.429 --> 00:36:42.429 in a large serving dish 00:36:42.429 --> 00:36:45.429 and send it to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:36:45.429 --> 00:36:48.429 My dish would follow the Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:36:48.429 --> 00:36:51.429 wherever he was among the homes of all his wives. 00:36:51.429 --> 00:36:54.460 For this reason, 00:36:54.460 --> 00:36:57.460 I would constantly ask my Lord for an increase 00:36:57.460 --> 00:37:00.460 in His bounty and provision, 00:37:00.460 --> 00:37:03.460 praying: 00:37:03.460 --> 00:37:06.460 "O Allah, grant me nobility and honor, 00:37:06.460 --> 00:37:09.460 for there is no nobility without generous deeds, 00:37:09.460 --> 00:37:12.559 and no deeds can be done without wealth. 00:37:12.559 --> 00:37:15.559 O Allah, little wealth does not suffice me, 00:37:15.559 --> 00:37:19.579 nor am I suited for it." 00:37:19.579 --> 00:37:22.619 I was also a man of intense protective jealousy (ghayrah): 00:37:22.619 --> 00:37:25.619 I never married any woman 00:37:25.619 --> 00:37:28.619 except that she was a virgin, 00:37:28.619 --> 00:37:31.619 and if I ever divorced a woman, 00:37:31.619 --> 00:37:36.630 no one would dare to marry her afterward. 00:37:36.630 --> 00:37:39.630 I likewise placed my horsemanship and military expertise 00:37:39.630 --> 00:37:42.789 at the service of Islam. 00:37:42.789 --> 00:37:45.789 In battles, the banner of the Emigrants was held 00:37:45.789 --> 00:37:48.789 by 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, 00:37:48.789 --> 00:37:51.820 while the banner of the Ansar was with me. 00:37:51.820 --> 00:37:54.820 When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, realized 00:37:54.820 --> 00:37:57.820 that the caravan of Abu Sufyan had escaped, 00:37:57.820 --> 00:38:00.820 he said, "Advise me, O people." 00:38:00.820 --> 00:38:03.820 Al-Miqdad and Abu Bakr spoke, 00:38:03.820 --> 00:38:06.820 may Allah be pleased with them, 00:38:06.820 --> 00:38:09.820 yet the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:38:09.820 --> 00:38:12.820 kept saying, "Advise me, O people." 00:38:12.820 --> 00:38:15.820 So I stood up and said, 00:38:15.820 --> 00:38:18.820 "By Allah, it is as though you mean us, O Messenger of Allah! 00:38:18.820 --> 00:38:21.820 March on, O Messenger of Allah, to whatever you wish, 00:38:21.820 --> 00:38:24.889 for we are with you. 00:38:24.889 --> 00:38:27.889 By Allah, if you ordered us to plunge 00:38:27.889 --> 00:38:30.889 our horses into the sea, we would plunge them in, 00:38:30.889 --> 00:38:33.889 and if you ordered us to spur them on 00:38:33.889 --> 00:38:36.920 to Bark al-Ghimad, we would surely do so." 00:38:36.920 --> 00:38:39.920 Thereupon, the face of the Prophet, peace be upon him, beamed with joy. 00:38:39.920 --> 00:38:42.980 And when the battle raged fiercely, 00:38:42.980 --> 00:38:45.980 I stood guard at the entrance of the shaded pavilion of 00:38:45.980 --> 00:38:48.980 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 00:38:48.980 --> 00:38:51.980 out of fear that the polytheists might reach him. 00:38:51.980 --> 00:38:55.239 So who am I?
