00:05:41.040 as did my brothers Qudamah and Abdullah." 00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:44.230 At first, the Quraysh did not object 00:05:44.230 --> 00:05:46.230 to the Muslims' conversion to Islam. became extremely angry, 00:06:13.329 --> 00:06:16.329 and they kindled against the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:06:16.329 --> 00:06:20.329 and his Companions the fires of enmity and hatred. 00:06:20.329 --> 00:06:24.329 Every tribe pounced upon the Muslims within it, 00:06:24.329 --> 00:06:27.329 and began to afflict them with severe hardship, 00:06:27.329 --> 00:06:30.329 beating their bodies with whips, 00:06:30.329 --> 00:06:32.329 branding their flesh with fire, 00:06:32.329 --> 00:06:36.329 and throwing them onto the burning sands in the heat of Makkah, 00:06:36.329 --> 00:06:38.329 to turn them away from their religion. 00:06:38.329 --> 00:06:41.329 The Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:06:41.329 --> 00:06:44.329 would see with his own eyes what was befalling his Companions, 00:06:44.329 --> 00:06:47.329 and his heart would break with sorrow for them, 00:06:47.329 --> 00:06:49.329 and anguish for what they were suffering. 00:06:49.329 --> 00:06:52.329 He could do nothing but say to them: 00:06:52.329 --> 00:06:56.329 "Be patient, be patient, for your appointment is in Paradise." 00:06:56.329 --> 00:07:01.740 At that, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gave permission 00:07:01.740 --> 00:07:04.740 to his Companions to migrate to Abyssinia. 00:07:04.740 --> 00:07:07.740 A group of the believers departed for it, 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:10.740 leaving behind their families and homeland, 00:07:10.740 --> 00:07:13.740 bidding farewell to their kin and dwellings, 00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:16.810 fleeing with their religion to Allah. 00:07:16.810 --> 00:07:18.810 Among the foremost of the emigrants 00:07:18.810 --> 00:07:20.810 was Uthman ibn Maz'un, 00:07:20.810 --> 00:07:22.810 along with his son and his two brothers. 00:07:22.810 --> 00:07:27.100 Not much time had passed since the Muslims' migration to Abyssinia, 00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:30.100 when false news reached them 00:07:30.100 --> 00:07:34.100 that most of the Quraysh had entered the religion of Allah, 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:39.100 and believed in what was revealed to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. 00:07:39.100 --> 00:07:42.100 So many of them returned to Makkah, 00:07:42.100 --> 00:07:46.100 not knowing what trials fate had in store for them. 00:07:46.100 --> 00:07:51.129 Among the foremost of those returning was Uthman ibn Maz'un. 00:07:51.129 --> 00:07:54.160 No sooner had their feet touched the soil of Makkah 00:07:54.160 --> 00:08:00.160 than the Quraysh met them with the same torture and persecution they had used when they left. 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:04.160 They inflicted upon them such harm and injury that they could not bear. 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:09.160 So Uthman ibn Maz'un entered into the protection of al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, 00:08:09.160 --> 00:08:13.160 the master of Banu Makhzum and one of the greatest leaders of the Quraysh, 00:08:13.160 --> 00:08:16.160 and the father of the Sword of Allah, Khalid. 00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:21.160 For he had some ancient, deep-rooted ties with him. 00:08:21.160 --> 00:08:25.379 Uthman ibn Maz'un lived under the protection of al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, 00:08:25.379 --> 00:08:30.379 and found in his protection the utmost peace and security he could hope for. 00:08:30.379 --> 00:08:34.379 Yet he was not content with this protection, 00:08:34.379 --> 00:08:38.379 for it troubled his peaceful and secure life 00:08:38.379 --> 00:08:42.379 that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, 00:08:42.379 --> 00:08:45.379 was receiving the harm he was from the Quraysh, 00:08:45.379 --> 00:08:49.379 and that his brothers in Allah were suffering from their oppression. 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:54.379 This caused him to accuse himself of selfishness, cowardice, and weak faith, 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:59.379 and he tossed and turned on the slow fire of a guilty conscience. 00:08:59.379 --> 00:09:04.639 Let us leave Uthman ibn Maz'un to speak about this psychological crisis of his, 00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:11.639 as he said: "When I saw the affliction the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, were in, 00:09:11.639 --> 00:09:16.639 while I was going and coming in safety under al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, 00:09:16.639 --> 00:09:20.639 I said to myself: 'Woe to you, O Ibn Maz'un! 00:09:20.639 --> 00:09:25.639 You live safe and secure under the protection of a polytheist man, 00:09:25.639 --> 00:09:33.639 while the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his Companions are suffering such affliction and harm for the sake of Allah that you are not experiencing. 00:09:33.639 --> 00:09:39.639 This is a great deficiency in your soul and a dangerous weakness in your faith.' 00:09:39.639 --> 00:09:43.899 Then I walked to al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah and said to him: 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:48.899 'O Abu Abd Shams, you have fulfilled your covenant to me, 00:09:48.899 --> 00:09:51.899 and I have found safety and security under your protection. 00:09:51.899 --> 00:09:55.899 But I wish to return your protection to you.' 00:09:55.899 --> 00:10:02.019 He said: 'Why, O son of my brother? Has someone from my people harmed you?' 00:10:02.019 --> 00:10:07.019 I said: 'No, but I have preferred the protection of Allah over all other protection, 00:10:07.019 --> 00:10:11.019 and I do not wish to seek protection from anyone other than Him.' 00:10:11.019 --> 00:10:16.019 He said: 'If it must be so, then come with me to the mosque, 00:10:16.019 --> 00:10:20.019 and return my protection to me before the assembly of the Quraysh, 00:10:20.019 --> 00:10:23.019 just as I granted you protection before them.' 00:10:23.019 --> 00:10:26.059 So we set out until we reached the mosque. 00:10:26.059 --> 00:10:31.059 Al-Walid said: 'O people, this is Uthman ibn Maz'un, 00:10:31.059 --> 00:10:35.059 he has come to return my protection to me.' I said: 'He speaks the truth. 00:10:35.059 --> 00:10:39.059 I found him to be faithful and noble in his protection, 00:10:39.059 --> 00:10:42.059 but I wanted not to seek protection from anyone other gathering of the Quraysh, 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:53.379 in the center of which was Labid the poet, 00:10:53.379 --> 00:10:57.379 who was reciting some of his poetry to the people, and they were listening. 00:10:57.379 --> 00:10:59.379 Labid said: 00:10:59.379 --> 00:11:03.379 'Indeed, everything except Allah is false.' 00:11:03.379 --> 00:11:05.379 I said: 'You have spoken the truth.' 00:11:05.379 --> 00:11:07.379 He continued, saying: 00:11:07.379 --> 00:11:10.379 'And every blessing will inevitably perish.' 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:12.379 I said: 'You have lied. 00:11:12.379 --> 00:11:15.379 The blessings of Paradise do not perish.' 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:19.379 Labid was enraged by this statement of mine and said: 00:11:19.379 --> 00:11:21.379 'O people of Quraysh, 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:24.379 by Allah, your companion was never harmed before. 00:11:24.379 --> 00:11:27.379 When did this happen among you?' 00:11:27.379 --> 00:11:29.379 A man from the people said: 00:11:29.379 --> 00:11:31.379 'This is a foolish man 00:11:31.379 --> 00:11:33.379 from a group of fools 00:11:33.379 --> 00:11:36.379 who have abandoned our gods and departed from our religion, 00:11:36.379 --> 00:11:39.379 so do not let his words anger you.' 00:11:39.379 --> 00:11:43.379 I turned to the man who had said what he said about us and our religion, 00:11:43.379 --> 00:11:45.379 and I argued with him, 00:11:45.379 --> 00:11:48.379 so he struck me a blow that caused my eye to bleed, 00:11:48.379 --> 00:11:50.379 and I could no longer see with it. 00:11:50.379 --> 00:11:54.379 Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah was near me, 00:11:54.379 --> 00:11:56.379 and he turned to me and said: 00:11:56.379 --> 00:11:58.379 "O son of my brother, your eye," 00:11:58.379 --> 00:12:02.379 "By Allah, was surely in no need of what has befallen it." 00:12:02.379 --> 00:12:03.379 I replied, 00:12:03.379 --> 00:12:04.379 "Nay, by Allah," 00:12:04.379 --> 00:12:10.470 "My healthy eye is indeed in need of what has befallen its sister for the sake of Allah." 00:12:10.470 --> 00:12:11.470 He said, 00:12:11.470 --> 00:12:13.470 "Is that so, O son of my brother?" 00:12:13.470 --> 00:12:15.470 "Then return to my protection if you wish." 00:12:15.470 --> 00:12:17.470 I said, 00:12:17.470 --> 00:12:21.730 "I will never trade the protection of Allah the Exalted for any other protection." 00:12:21.730 --> 00:12:23.730 From that day on, 00:12:23.730 --> 00:12:28.730 The persecution of the polytheists against 'Uthman ibn Maz'un began to intensify and grow harsh. 00:12:28.730 --> 00:12:33.730 He and his kin became a target for the malice and brutality of Quraysh. 00:12:33.730 --> 00:12:38.730 This is what compelled him to be among the vanguard of those migrating to Medina. 00:12:38.730 --> 00:12:40.730 And there, 00:12:40.730 --> 00:12:44.730 There he witnessed the Battle of Badr alongside the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. 00:12:44.730 --> 00:12:47.730 He, his son, and his brother all took part in it. 00:12:47.730 --> 00:12:50.730 They displayed the most sincere and noble courage on its battlefield. 00:12:50.730 --> 00:12:55.730 They fulfilled the duty they owed to Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. 00:12:55.730 --> 00:13:00.820 They emerged from it among the victorious and triumphant Muslims. 00:13:00.820 --> 00:13:02.820 It was but a short time later, 00:13:02.820 --> 00:13:09.019 That 'Uthman ibn Maz'un fell terminally ill and departed from this life. 00:13:09.019 --> 00:13:14.019 When the news of his death reached the Messenger, peace be upon him, 00:13:14.019 --> 00:13:18.049 He went to him, his heart filled with sorrow. 00:13:18.049 --> 00:13:22.049 He lifted the shroud from his pure, radiant forehead, 00:13:22.049 --> 00:13:23.049 And kissed him. 00:13:23.049 --> 00:13:26.049 Then he leaned over him once more, 00:13:26.049 --> 00:13:28.049 And kissed him a second time. 00:13:28.049 --> 00:13:30.049 Then he leaned over him a third time, 00:13:30.049 --> 00:13:32.049 And kissed him again. 00:13:32.049 --> 00:13:36.049 Suddenly, the tears of the noble Prophet, peace be upon him, 00:13:36.049 --> 00:13:40.049 Began to stream down his radiant, noble face. 00:13:40.049 --> 00:13:44.370 And the Muslims who were present wept because of his weeping. 00:13:44.370 --> 00:13:49.370 May Allah be pleased with the noble Companion 'Uthman ibn Maz'un and grant him satisfaction. 00:13:49.370 --> 00:13:53.370 And may He make his abode and resting place in the highest reaches of 'Illiyyin. 00:13:53.370 --> 00:14:01.629 For he chose the protection of Allah over all other protection. 00:14:01.629 --> 00:14:05.629 Indeed, Ibn Maz'un chose the protection of Allah over all other protection.
