believing that if they failed to do so, they would incur the wrath and punishment of Allah.

said to his wives one day,

'Which of you will have the dogs of al-Haw'ab bark at her?'—

that is, the rider of the shaggy camel,

around whom many will be slain,

He selected forty women

and stood at the doorway.

By Allah, there was never anything between me and 'Ali

in the past, may Allah be pleased with him,

except what commonly arises between a woman and her in-laws;

and despite any reproaches I had,

he is truly among the very best of men."

Thereupon 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said,

"By Allah, she has spoken the truth! There was never anything between her and me

deeply regretted her march to Basra

and her presence at the Battle of the Camel.

Whenever she remembered that day,

she would weep until her tears soaked her veil.

Likewise, the foremost early Companions universally regretted

their involvement in that fighting;

Talhah, al-Zubayr, and 'Ali all regretted it,

may Allah be pleased with them all.

On the day of the Camel, none of them had

any prior intention to fight,

rather the conflict erupted beyond their control.

the two Sa'ds, and the Rightly-Guided Caliphs.
