Summary of the concepts of Ahl al-Sunnah
Major disbelief and minor disbelief
Major disbelief is that which expels one from the religion (millah).
Like the types mentioned in the previous concept.
And it contradicts the foundation of faith.
Therefore, Allah does not forgive it except through repentance.
And its perpetrator will remain eternally in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection if he does not repent from it.
Minor disbelief is that which is named disbelief but does not expel one from the religion.
Such as committing some acts of disbelief
which diminish faith but do not nullify it.
Such as disbelief in blessings and fighting a Muslim,
wailing over the dead, and slandering lineages,
and minor hypocrisy (riya') and swearing by other than Allah.
And all these actions have been named acts of disbelief in the Sharia.
However, other Sharia evidence indicates that it is not intended to mean expulsion from the religion.
Rather, its perpetrator is considered to have committed a great sin.
And if he enters the Fire because of them, he will not remain eternally in it.
And when the term "disbelief" is used generally,
it originally refers to major disbelief,
which nullifies all deeds
and causes its perpetrator to remain eternally in the Fire if he dies upon it without repenting.
Unless evidence indicates that this naming is not intended.
