WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:32.240 A brief commentary 00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:35.240 on the book *ID Cards 00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:38.240 for the Surahs of the Noble Qur'an* 00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:42.240 by Dr. Muhammad Ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz Ibn 'Umar Naseef, 00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:44.369 may Allah preserve him. 00:00:44.369 --> 00:00:46.369 Surah al-Mutaffifin. 00:00:46.369 --> 00:00:48.369 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. 00:00:48.369 --> 00:00:50.369 All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings 00:00:50.369 --> 00:00:52.689 be upon the Messenger of Allah, 00:00:52.689 --> 00:00:55.689 and upon his family, his Companions, and those who follow his guidance. 00:00:55.689 --> 00:00:58.689 We are still with the brief commentary 00:00:58.689 --> 00:01:00.689 on the ID cards, 00:01:00.689 --> 00:01:02.689 and with Surah al-Mutaffifin. 00:01:02.689 --> 00:01:04.689 I have three points to highlight regarding it. 00:01:04.689 --> 00:01:06.689 The first point concerns the placement of the surah. 00:01:06.689 --> 00:01:09.939 We notice that it is preceded by al-Takwir and al-Infitar, 00:01:09.939 --> 00:01:11.980 and followed 00:01:11.980 --> 00:01:13.980 by al-Inshiqaq as well. 00:01:13.980 --> 00:01:15.980 I mean that it is preceded 00:01:15.980 --> 00:01:20.099 and followed by surahs that speak about the Day of Resurrection. 00:01:20.099 --> 00:01:22.099 Likewise, 00:01:22.099 --> 00:01:25.099 mention of that great Day appears in this surah. 00:01:25.099 --> 00:01:28.359 However, we notice that each surah is distinguished by a particular emphasis. 00:01:28.359 --> 00:01:31.359 Among the unique features of this surah 00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:35.739 is the mention of mankind standing before the Lord of the worlds, 00:01:35.739 --> 00:01:39.739 which is a monumental matter that brings us to the second point. 00:01:39.739 --> 00:01:44.060 This second point is that remembering mankind's standing before the Lord of the worlds— 00:01:44.060 --> 00:01:48.540 and remembering the events of the Hereafter in general— 00:01:48.540 --> 00:01:52.640 ought to be a positive remembrance, 00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:56.640 meaning it must have an impact on one's behavior. 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:01.640 Remembering mankind's standing before the Lord of the worlds is not 00:02:01.640 --> 00:02:05.640 something a person simply recalls 00:02:05.640 --> 00:02:08.770 merely to feel fear, 00:02:08.770 --> 00:02:10.770 or merely to hope, 00:02:10.770 --> 00:02:13.770 but rather to act and be deterred from sin. 00:02:13.770 --> 00:02:17.990 We observe that those who engaged in defrauding others in measure— 00:02:17.990 --> 00:02:20.990 their problem was the absence of this reality from their minds. 00:02:20.990 --> 00:02:23.990 Thus, when this reality is present, 00:02:23.990 --> 00:02:29.150 it ought to reform a person's behavior in this worldly life, 00:02:29.150 --> 00:02:32.280 in preparation for that reality 00:02:32.280 --> 00:02:35.500 when its time comes in the Hereafter. 00:02:35.500 --> 00:02:38.949 This leads us to the third point. 00:02:38.949 --> 00:02:40.949 For indeed, the Companions— 00:02:40.949 --> 00:02:42.949 and this relates to the context of revelation— 00:02:42.949 --> 00:02:45.949 who were in Madinah, Ibn 'Abbas says about them, 00:02:45.949 --> 00:02:47.949 and regarding the residents of Madinah he says: 00:02:47.949 --> 00:02:49.949 "When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrived in 00:02:49.949 --> 00:02:53.949 Madinah, they were among the worst of people in weighing and measuring. 00:02:53.949 --> 00:02:58.050 So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: ◁ Woe to those who give less [than due] ▷, 00:02:58.050 --> 00:03:01.139 and they gave good measure after that." 00:03:01.139 --> 00:03:04.240 Notice that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, warned against a disease, 00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:07.270 namely defrauding in measure—which is a disease, 00:03:07.270 --> 00:03:10.270 as all sins are truly diseases. 00:03:10.270 --> 00:03:13.340 And He mentioned the cause of the disease, saying: 00:03:13.340 --> 00:03:16.340 ◁ Do such people not think that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day? ▷ 00:03:16.340 --> 00:03:19.340 “The day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds?” (83:6) 00:03:19.340 --> 00:03:23.400 So it was as if when they remembered this Day, 00:03:23.400 --> 00:03:26.500 that occurred which he indicated at the end of the hadith: 00:03:26.500 --> 00:03:28.500 "And they gave good measure after that." 00:03:28.500 --> 00:03:31.560 Now we know that bad social 00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:33.689 habits, 00:03:33.689 --> 00:03:35.689 once they spread and a town becomes known for them, 00:03:35.689 --> 00:03:37.689 are difficult to change. 00:03:37.689 --> 00:03:41.849 In truth, nothing changes them except faith. 00:03:41.849 --> 00:03:43.849 Here I conclude with a story 00:03:43.849 --> 00:03:47.849 mentioned about a godly scholar, 00:03:47.849 --> 00:03:49.849 whose biography was recorded by scholars 00:03:49.849 --> 00:03:51.849 roughly in the last century 00:03:51.849 --> 00:03:52.849 or the one before it. 00:03:52.849 --> 00:03:55.849 He was in the land of India, and his name was Ahmad 'Irfan. 00:03:55.849 --> 00:03:56.849 Read his biography. 00:03:56.849 --> 00:04:00.039 He entered a town where alcohol was widespread, 00:04:00.039 --> 00:04:02.039 and there were alcohol factories in it 00:04:02.039 --> 00:04:03.099 in India. 00:04:03.099 --> 00:04:07.099 The population numbered four million, 00:04:07.099 --> 00:04:09.419 as I recall reading the story long ago. 00:04:09.419 --> 00:04:12.419 Sheikh al-Tantawi, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote about him. 00:04:12.419 --> 00:04:15.580 The amazing thing is that within a short period, 00:04:15.580 --> 00:04:17.579 by strengthening the faith of the people of this town, 00:04:17.579 --> 00:04:20.649 the alcohol factories closed their doors, 00:04:20.649 --> 00:04:23.810 because they found no one to buy from them. 00:04:23.810 --> 00:04:26.810 Faith is what changes things, 00:04:26.810 --> 00:04:31.060 or rather it is what reforms whatever has become corrupt in societies. 00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:33.060 And the greatest thing that strengthens faith 00:04:33.060 --> 00:04:36.060 is the Qur'an, which influenced the residents of Madinah 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:38.060 so that "they gave good measure after that." 00:04:38.060 --> 00:04:42.319 We ask Allah to make us among those who benefit 00:04:42.319 --> 00:04:43.319 from this Magnificent Qur'an. 00:04:43.319 --> 00:04:44.319 May Allah bless him and grant him peace, 00:04:44.319 --> 00:04:45.319 and may the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. 00:04:45.319 --> 00:04:46.319 And may the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you. 00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:47.319 May Allah bestow blessings and peace upon him and all his Companions. 00:04:47.319 --> 00:04:48.319 And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
