00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

00:00:15.320 --> 00:00:18.320
The Mawaddah Association is pleased

00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:22.320
to present to you glimpses from the lives of the Companions,

00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:25.320
by Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha,

00:00:25.320 --> 00:00:27.350
may Allah have mercy upon him.

00:00:27.350 --> 00:00:33.859
‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl, may Allah be pleased with him.

00:00:47.060 --> 00:00:50.060
He was in his late twenties

00:00:50.060 --> 00:00:54.060
on the day the Prophet of Mercy proclaimed the call to guidance and truth.

00:00:54.060 --> 00:00:57.060
He was among the most noble of Quraysh in status,

00:00:57.060 --> 00:01:00.060
the wealthiest, and the most prestigious in lineage.

00:01:00.060 --> 00:01:04.060
It would have been fitting for him to embrace Islam as his peers did,

00:01:04.060 --> 00:01:08.060
such as Sa‘d Ibn Abi Waqqas and Mus‘ab Ibn ‘Umayr,

00:01:08.060 --> 00:01:12.060
and others from the prominent houses of Makkah,

00:01:12.060 --> 00:01:14.060
had it not been for his father.

00:01:14.060 --> 00:01:16.060
And who, one might wonder, was this father?

00:01:16.060 --> 00:01:19.060
He was the greatest tyrant of Makkah,

00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:21.060
the primary leader of polytheism,

00:01:21.060 --> 00:01:23.060
and the author of the torment

00:01:23.060 --> 00:01:27.060
by whose brutality Allah tested the faith of the believers, yet they remained steadfast,

00:01:27.060 --> 00:01:31.060
and by whose cunning He tested the sincerity of the certain, and they proved true.

00:01:31.060 --> 00:01:34.060
He was Abu Jahl, and that is enough said.

00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:36.060
Such was his father; as for him,

00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:39.060
he was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl al-Makhzumi,

00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:42.060
one of the renowned chieftains of Quraysh,

00:01:42.060 --> 00:01:45.060
and one of its most prominent knights.

00:01:45.060 --> 00:01:48.060
‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl found himself driven,

00:01:48.060 --> 00:01:50.060
by virtue of his father’s leadership,

00:01:50.060 --> 00:01:54.060
to oppose Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:01:54.060 --> 00:01:57.060
He showed the Messenger the fiercest enmity,

00:01:57.060 --> 00:02:00.060
inflicted the most grievous harm upon his Companions,

00:02:00.060 --> 00:02:03.060
and poured upon Islam and the Muslims such torment

00:02:03.060 --> 00:02:06.060
as brought joy to his father’s eyes.

00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:09.060
When his father led the battle of polytheism on the day of Badr,

00:02:09.060 --> 00:02:11.060
and swore by Allah and al-‘Uzza

00:02:11.060 --> 00:02:13.060
that he would not return to Makkah

00:02:13.060 --> 00:02:15.060
unless he defeated Muhammad,

00:02:15.060 --> 00:02:17.060
and he descended upon Badr,

00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:19.060
and stayed there for three days,

00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:21.060
slaughtering camels, drinking wine,

00:02:21.060 --> 00:02:24.060
and having singing girls play music for him—

00:02:24.060 --> 00:02:27.060
when Abu Jahl led this battle,

00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:30.060
his son ‘Ikrimah was the arm upon which he relied,

00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:33.060
and the hand with which he struck.

00:02:33.060 --> 00:02:35.060
But al-Lat and al-‘Uzza

00:02:35.060 --> 00:02:38.060
did not answer Abu Jahl’s call,

00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:40.060
for they could not hear,

00:02:40.060 --> 00:02:42.060
nor did they grant him victory in his battle,

00:02:42.060 --> 00:02:44.060
for they were powerless.

00:02:44.060 --> 00:02:46.060
So he fell prostrate, slain before Badr,

00:02:46.060 --> 00:02:49.060
and his son ‘Ikrimah saw him with his own eyes,

00:02:49.060 --> 00:02:52.060
as the spears of the Muslims drank from his blood,

00:02:52.060 --> 00:02:54.060
and he heard him with his own ears

00:02:54.060 --> 00:02:56.060
as he let out his final cry,

00:02:56.060 --> 00:02:58.060
which escaped his lips.

00:02:58.060 --> 00:03:00.060
‘Ikrimah returned to Makkah

00:03:00.060 --> 00:03:03.060
after leaving the corpse of the master of Quraysh at Badr,

00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:05.060
for the defeat had rendered him unable

00:03:05.060 --> 00:03:08.060
to retrieve it for burial in Makkah,

00:03:08.060 --> 00:03:11.060
and his flight forced him to abandon it to the Muslims,

00:03:11.060 --> 00:03:13.060
who cast it into the pit

00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:15.060
along with dozens of the slain polytheists,

00:03:15.060 --> 00:03:18.060
and heaped sand upon it.

00:03:18.060 --> 00:03:20.090
From that day on,

00:03:20.090 --> 00:03:22.090
‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl’s relationship

00:03:22.090 --> 00:03:24.090
with Islam took a different turn.

00:03:24.090 --> 00:03:27.090
For he had initially opposed it

00:03:27.090 --> 00:03:29.090
out of zeal for his father,

00:03:29.090 --> 00:03:31.090
but now he opposed it to avenge him.

00:03:31.090 --> 00:03:33.090
Hence,

00:03:33.090 --> 00:03:35.090
‘Ikrimah and a group of those whose

00:03:35.090 --> 00:03:37.090
fathers were killed at Badr

00:03:37.090 --> 00:03:39.090
fanned the flames of enmity

00:03:39.090 --> 00:03:41.090
in the chests of the polytheists against Muhammad,

00:03:41.090 --> 00:03:43.090
and stoked the embers of vengeance

00:03:43.090 --> 00:03:46.090
in the hearts of the aggrieved among Quraysh,

00:03:46.090 --> 00:03:49.090
until the battle of Uhud took place.

00:03:49.090 --> 00:03:52.090
‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl went out to Uhud,

00:03:52.090 --> 00:03:55.090
and brought with him his wife, Umm Hakim,

00:03:55.090 --> 00:03:57.090
to stand with the women who were aggrieved

00:03:57.090 --> 00:03:59.090
at Badr behind the lines,

00:03:59.090 --> 00:04:02.090
and to beat the tambourines with them,

00:04:02.090 --> 00:04:04.090
inciting Quraysh to fight,

00:04:04.090 --> 00:04:06.090
and steadying its knights

00:04:06.090 --> 00:04:09.090
should their souls suggest flight to them.

00:04:09.090 --> 00:04:12.150
Quraysh placed on the right flank of its cavalry

00:04:12.150 --> 00:04:14.150
Khalid Ibn al-Walid,

00:04:14.150 --> 00:04:17.149
and on their left flank, ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.

00:04:17.149 --> 00:04:19.149
Both polytheist knights performed

00:04:19.149 --> 00:04:21.149
on that day a feat

00:04:21.149 --> 00:04:25.149
that tipped the scales of Quraysh against Muhammad and his Companions,

00:04:25.149 --> 00:04:28.149
and achieved for the polytheists a great victory,

00:04:28.149 --> 00:04:31.149
which made Abu Sufyan say,

00:04:31.149 --> 00:04:33.250
"This is for the day of Badr."

00:04:33.250 --> 00:04:35.250
And on the day of the Trench,

00:04:35.250 --> 00:04:37.250
the polytheists besieged the city

00:04:37.250 --> 00:04:39.250
for many long days,

00:04:39.250 --> 00:04:41.250
until ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl’s patience ran out,

00:04:41.250 --> 00:04:43.250
and he grew weary of the siege.

00:04:43.250 --> 00:04:46.250
He spotted a narrow place in the trench,

00:04:46.250 --> 00:04:49.250
spurred his horse into it, and crossed it,

00:04:49.250 --> 00:04:52.250
followed by a few men behind him,

00:04:52.250 --> 00:04:54.250
in a daring adventure

00:04:54.250 --> 00:04:58.250
that cost ‘Amr Ibn ‘Abd Wudd al-‘Amiri his life,

00:04:58.250 --> 00:05:02.250
while he himself was only saved by flight.

00:05:02.250 --> 00:05:04.279
On the day of the Conquest,

00:05:04.279 --> 00:05:08.279
Quraysh saw that it was no match for Muhammad and his Companions,

00:05:08.279 --> 00:05:11.279
so it resolved to clear the path for him to Makkah.

00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:14.279
It was helped in making this decision

00:05:14.279 --> 00:05:17.279
by the knowledge that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:22.279
had ordered his commanders not to fight anyone from the people of Makkah except those who fought them.

00:05:22.279 --> 00:05:26.279
But ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl and a group with him

00:05:26.279 --> 00:05:28.279
defied the consensus of Quraysh,

00:05:28.279 --> 00:05:30.279
and confronted the great army,

00:05:30.279 --> 00:05:34.279
only to be defeated by Khalid Ibn al-Walid in a small skirmish,

00:05:34.279 --> 00:05:36.279
in which some of them were killed,

00:05:36.279 --> 00:05:39.279
while those who could flee did so.

00:05:40.279 --> 00:05:44.279
Among the fugitives was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.

00:05:44.279 --> 00:05:48.310
At that point, ‘Ikrimah was left in a desperate plight,

00:05:48.310 --> 00:05:52.310
for Makkah had become inhospitable to him after it submitted to the Muslims,

00:05:52.310 --> 00:05:55.310
and the Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:05:55.310 --> 00:05:58.310
had pardoned the past transgressions of Quraysh,

00:05:58.310 --> 00:06:01.310
but he had excepted a few whom he named,

00:06:01.310 --> 00:06:05.310
and ordered them to be killed even if they were found under the curtains of the Ka‘bah.

00:06:05.310 --> 00:06:08.310
At the forefront of these individuals

00:06:08.310 --> 00:06:10.310
was ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl.

00:06:10.310 --> 00:06:13.310
Therefore, he snuck out of Makkah in disguise,

00:06:13.310 --> 00:06:16.310
and set his face toward Yemen,

00:06:16.310 --> 00:06:19.310
for he had no refuge but there.

00:06:19.310 --> 00:06:22.310
At that time, Umm Hakim,

00:06:22.310 --> 00:06:24.310
the wife of ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl,

00:06:24.310 --> 00:06:26.310
and Hind bint ‘Utbah

00:06:26.310 --> 00:06:30.310
went to the house of the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

00:06:30.310 --> 00:06:34.310
accompanied by ten women to pledge allegiance to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:06:34.310 --> 00:06:36.310
They entered upon him,

00:06:36.310 --> 00:06:39.310
and with him were two of his wives, his daughter Fatimah,

00:06:39.310 --> 00:06:42.310
and some of the women of the family of ‘Abd al-Muttalib.

00:06:42.310 --> 00:06:45.310
Hind spoke while veiled,

00:06:45.310 --> 00:06:48.310
and said, "O Messenger of Allah,

00:06:48.310 --> 00:06:52.310
praise be to Allah who has manifested the religion He chose for Himself.

00:06:52.310 --> 00:06:55.310
I ask you to treat me with your kindness,

00:06:55.310 --> 00:06:58.310
for I am a believing, affirming woman."

00:06:58.310 --> 00:07:01.310
Then she unveiled her face and said,

00:07:01.310 --> 00:07:04.310
"I am Hind bint ‘Utbah, O Messenger of Allah."

00:07:04.310 --> 00:07:07.310
The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her,

00:07:07.310 --> 00:07:09.310
"Welcome."

00:07:09.310 --> 00:07:12.310
She said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

00:07:12.310 --> 00:07:17.310
there was no house on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be humbled than your house,

00:07:17.310 --> 00:07:19.310
but now I have reached the point

00:07:19.310 --> 00:07:23.310
where there is no house on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be honored than your house."

00:07:23.310 --> 00:07:25.310
The Messenger of Allah said,

00:07:25.310 --> 00:07:27.310
"And even more than that."

00:07:27.310 --> 00:07:29.310
Then Umm Hakim stood up,

00:07:29.310 --> 00:07:31.310
the wife of ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl,

00:07:31.310 --> 00:07:33.310
and she embraced Islam and said,

00:07:33.310 --> 00:07:35.310
"O Messenger of Allah,

00:07:35.310 --> 00:07:37.310
‘Ikrimah has fled from you to Yemen,

00:07:37.310 --> 00:07:39.310
fearing that you would kill him,

00:07:39.310 --> 00:07:41.310
so grant him safety, may Allah grant you safety."

00:07:41.310 --> 00:07:44.310
He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:45.310
"He is safe."

00:07:45.310 --> 00:07:48.310
She set out immediately in search of him,

00:07:48.310 --> 00:07:50.310
accompanied by a Roman servant of hers.

00:07:50.310 --> 00:07:52.310
When they had traveled far along the road,

00:07:52.310 --> 00:07:55.310
the servant tried to seduce her,

00:07:55.310 --> 00:07:57.310
so she kept him hopeful and stalled him

00:07:57.310 --> 00:08:00.310
until she arrived at a tribe of Arabs,

00:08:00.310 --> 00:08:02.310
and sought their help against him.

00:08:02.310 --> 00:08:05.310
They bound him and kept him with them,

00:08:05.310 --> 00:08:07.310
and she continued on her way

00:08:07.310 --> 00:08:10.310
until she caught up with ‘Ikrimah at the seashore,

00:08:10.310 --> 00:08:12.310
in the region of Tihamah,

00:08:12.310 --> 00:08:15.310
where he was negotiating with a Muslim sailor to transport him,

00:08:15.310 --> 00:08:17.310
and the sailor was saying to him,

00:08:17.310 --> 00:08:19.310
"Be sincere, and I will transport you."

00:08:19.310 --> 00:08:21.310
‘Ikrimah asked him,

00:08:21.310 --> 00:08:23.310
"And how do I be sincere?"

00:08:23.310 --> 00:08:24.310
He said,

00:08:24.310 --> 00:08:27.310
"Say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

00:08:27.310 --> 00:08:30.310
and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

00:08:30.310 --> 00:08:31.310
‘Ikrimah said,

00:08:31.310 --> 00:08:33.309
"I have fled for no other reason than this."

00:08:33.309 --> 00:08:35.309
While they were in that state,

00:08:35.309 --> 00:08:38.309
Umm Hakim approached ‘Ikrimah,

00:08:38.309 --> 00:08:39.309
and said,

00:08:39.309 --> 00:08:40.309
"O cousin,

00:08:40.309 --> 00:08:42.309
I have come to you from the best of people,

00:08:42.309 --> 00:08:44.309
the most righteous of people,

00:08:44.309 --> 00:08:45.309
and the most excellent of people,

00:08:45.309 --> 00:08:47.309
from Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdullah.

00:08:47.309 --> 00:08:50.309
I have sought safety for you from him, and he has granted it,

00:08:50.309 --> 00:08:52.309
so do not destroy yourself."

00:08:52.309 --> 00:08:53.309
He asked,

00:08:53.309 --> 00:08:55.309
"Did you speak to him?"

00:08:55.309 --> 00:08:56.309
She said, "Yes,

00:08:56.309 --> 00:08:58.309
I spoke to him and he granted you safety."

00:08:59.309 --> 00:09:02.309
She continued to reassure and comfort him

00:09:02.309 --> 00:09:04.309
until he returned with her.

00:09:04.309 --> 00:09:07.309
Then she told him the story of her Roman servant,

00:09:07.309 --> 00:09:10.309
He passed by him and killed him before he could embrace Islam.

00:09:10.309 --> 00:09:13.309
While they were at a place where they had stopped on the road,

00:09:13.309 --> 00:09:16.309
‘Ikrimah wished to be alone with his wife,

00:09:16.309 --> 00:09:19.309
but she refused him with the utmost firmness.

00:09:19.309 --> 00:09:20.309
She said,

00:09:20.309 --> 00:09:21.309
"I am a Muslim,

00:09:21.309 --> 00:09:23.309
and you are a polytheist."

00:09:23.309 --> 00:09:25.309
He was filled with astonishment and said,

00:09:25.309 --> 00:09:28.309
"A matter that stands between you and being alone with me

00:09:28.309 --> 00:09:30.309
is a grave matter indeed."

00:09:30.309 --> 00:09:33.309
When ‘Ikrimah drew near to Makkah,

00:09:33.309 --> 00:09:36.309
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to his Companions,

00:09:36.309 --> 00:09:39.309
"‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl will come to you,

00:09:39.309 --> 00:09:40.309
as a believer and a migrant.

00:09:40.309 --> 00:09:42.309
Do not insult his father,

00:09:42.309 --> 00:09:45.309
for insulting the dead hurts the living,

00:09:45.309 --> 00:09:47.309
and it does not reach the dead."

00:09:47.309 --> 00:09:49.309
It was only a short while

00:09:49.309 --> 00:09:52.309
before ‘Ikrimah and his wife arrived

00:09:52.309 --> 00:09:54.309
at the place where the Messenger of Allah was sitting.

00:09:54.309 --> 00:09:56.309
Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:09:56.309 --> 00:10:00.309
When the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, saw him,

00:10:00.309 --> 00:10:02.309
he sprang up toward him without his outer garment,

00:10:02.309 --> 00:10:04.309
in his joy for him.

00:10:04.309 --> 00:10:06.309
When the Messenger of Allah sat down,

00:10:06.309 --> 00:10:09.309
‘Ikrimah stood before him and said,

00:10:09.309 --> 00:10:10.309
"O Muhammad,

00:10:10.309 --> 00:10:14.309
Umm Hakim has informed me that you have granted me safety."

00:10:14.309 --> 00:10:16.309
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

00:10:16.309 --> 00:10:18.309
"You have spoken the truth;

00:10:18.309 --> 00:10:19.309
you are safe."

00:10:19.309 --> 00:10:21.309
‘Ikrimah then asked,

00:10:21.309 --> 00:10:23.309
"To what do you invite, O Muhammad?"

00:10:23.309 --> 00:10:24.309
He replied,

00:10:24.309 --> 00:10:26.309
"I invite you to testify

00:10:26.309 --> 00:10:28.309
that there is no god but Allah,

00:10:28.309 --> 00:10:30.309
and that I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger,

00:10:30.309 --> 00:10:32.309
and to establish prayer and pay the zakat,"

00:10:32.309 --> 00:10:36.309
until he had counted all the pillars of Islam.

00:10:36.309 --> 00:10:38.309
‘Ikrimah said,

00:10:38.309 --> 00:10:41.309
"By Allah, you have only invited to the truth,

00:10:41.309 --> 00:10:43.309
and you have only commanded what is good."

00:10:43.309 --> 00:10:45.309
Then he added,

00:10:45.309 --> 00:10:47.309
"By Allah, you were among us,

00:10:47.309 --> 00:10:49.309
before you invited to what you have invited to,

00:10:49.309 --> 00:10:51.309
as the most truthful of us in speech."

00:10:52.309 --> 00:10:55.309
Then he extended his hand and said,

00:10:55.309 --> 00:10:58.309
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

00:10:58.309 --> 00:11:01.309
and I bear witness that you are His servant and His Messenger."

00:11:01.309 --> 00:11:03.309
Then he said,

00:11:03.309 --> 00:11:05.309
"O Messenger of Allah,

00:11:05.309 --> 00:11:07.309
teach me the best thing I can say."

00:11:07.309 --> 00:11:08.309
He replied,

00:11:08.309 --> 00:11:11.309
"Say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

00:11:11.309 --> 00:11:14.309
and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger."

00:11:14.309 --> 00:11:16.309
‘Ikrimah asked,

00:11:16.309 --> 00:11:17.309
"And what then?"

00:11:17.309 --> 00:11:20.309
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

00:11:20.309 --> 00:11:21.309
"Say:

00:11:21.309 --> 00:11:23.309
I call Allah to witness,

00:11:23.309 --> 00:11:24.309
and I call those present to witness,

00:11:24.309 --> 00:11:27.309
that I am a Muslim, a mujahid, and a migrant."

00:11:27.309 --> 00:11:29.309
‘Ikrimah said that.

00:11:29.309 --> 00:11:31.309
At this,

00:11:31.309 --> 00:11:34.309
the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, said to him,

00:11:34.309 --> 00:11:37.309
"Today, you will not ask me for anything that I give to anyone

00:11:37.309 --> 00:11:39.309
without me giving it to you."

00:11:39.309 --> 00:11:41.309
‘Ikrimah said,

00:11:41.309 --> 00:11:46.309
"I ask you to seek forgiveness for me for every enmity I showed you,

00:11:46.309 --> 00:11:48.309
or any position in which I confronted you,

00:11:48.309 --> 00:11:52.309
or any words I spoke to your face or behind your back."

00:11:52.309 --> 00:11:55.309
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

00:11:55.309 --> 00:11:59.309
"O Allah, forgive him for every enmity he showed me,

00:11:59.309 --> 00:12:04.309
and every step he took toward a place where he intended to extinguish Your light.

00:12:04.309 --> 00:12:07.309
And forgive him for what he said against my honor to my face,

00:12:07.309 --> 00:12:09.309
or when I was absent from him."

00:12:09.309 --> 00:12:12.309
‘Ikrimah’s face beamed with joy,

00:12:12.309 --> 00:12:13.309
and he said,

00:12:13.309 --> 00:12:15.309
"By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

00:12:15.309 --> 00:12:17.309
I will not spend any wealth

00:12:17.309 --> 00:12:20.309
that I had spent in hindering people from the path of Allah,

00:12:20.309 --> 00:12:23.309
but that I will spend double of it in the path of Allah.

00:12:23.309 --> 00:12:27.309
And I will not engage in any battle in which I fought to hinder people from the path of Allah,

00:12:27.309 --> 00:12:30.309
but that I will fight double of it in the path of Allah."

00:12:30.309 --> 00:12:32.309
From that day on,

00:12:32.309 --> 00:12:37.309
a brave knight joined the ranks of the call, active on the battlefields,

00:12:37.309 --> 00:12:42.309
a worshiper, a night-prayer performer, and a reciter of the Book of Allah in the mosques.

00:12:42.309 --> 00:12:46.309
He used to place the Mushaf on his face and say,

00:12:46.309 --> 00:12:49.309
"The Book of my Lord, the speech of my Lord,"

00:12:49.309 --> 00:12:52.309
while weeping out of fear of Allah.

00:12:52.309 --> 00:12:56.309
‘Ikrimah remained true to the pledge he made to the Messenger.

00:12:56.309 --> 00:12:59.309
The Muslims did not fight a battle after his conversion

00:12:59.309 --> 00:13:01.309
but that he fought it with them,

00:13:01.309 --> 00:13:03.309
and they did not go out on an expedition

00:13:03.309 --> 00:13:05.309
but that he was in their vanguard.

00:13:05.309 --> 00:13:07.309
On the day of Yarmouk,

00:13:07.309 --> 00:13:09.309
‘Ikrimah rushed into battle

00:13:09.309 --> 00:13:14.309
like one who is thirsty rushes to cold water on a scorching day.

00:13:14.309 --> 00:13:18.309
When the distress became severe for the Muslims at one point,

00:13:18.309 --> 00:13:21.309
he dismounted from his horse and broke the scabbard of his sword,

00:13:21.309 --> 00:13:23.309
and plunged into the ranks of the Romans.

00:13:23.309 --> 00:13:26.309
Khalid ibn al-Walid hurried to him and said,

00:13:26.309 --> 00:13:28.309
"Do not do this, ‘Ikrimah,

00:13:28.309 --> 00:13:31.309
for your death would be a heavy blow to the Muslims."

00:13:31.309 --> 00:13:33.309
He replied,

00:13:33.309 --> 00:13:35.309
"Leave me, O Khalid,

00:13:35.309 --> 00:13:40.309
for you had a precedence with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

00:13:40.309 --> 00:13:42.309
As for me and my father,

00:13:42.309 --> 00:13:45.309
we were among the harshest of people against the Messenger of Allah.

00:13:45.309 --> 00:13:48.309
So let me make amends for what has passed."

00:13:48.309 --> 00:13:50.309
Then he said,

00:13:50.309 --> 00:13:55.309
"I have fought the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in many places,

00:13:55.309 --> 00:13:57.309
and shall I flee from the Romans today?

00:13:57.309 --> 00:14:00.309
That will never happen."

00:14:00.309 --> 00:14:02.309
Then he called out to the Muslims,

00:14:02.309 --> 00:14:04.309
"Who will pledge to die?"

00:14:04.309 --> 00:14:06.309
His cousin al-Harith ibn Hisham pledged to him,

00:14:06.309 --> 00:14:08.309
as did Dirar ibn al-Azwar,

00:14:08.309 --> 00:14:10.309
along with four hundred Muslims.

00:14:10.309 --> 00:14:15.309
They fought in defense of the tent of Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him, with the fiercest fighting,

00:14:15.309 --> 00:14:17.309
and they defended him with the most noble defense.

00:14:17.309 --> 00:14:20.309
When the Battle of Yarmouk concluded

00:14:20.309 --> 00:14:23.309
with that decisive victory for the Muslims,

00:14:23.309 --> 00:14:25.309
there were lying on the ground of Yarmouk

00:14:25.309 --> 00:14:27.309
three mujahidin,

00:14:27.309 --> 00:14:29.309
exhausted by their wounds.

00:14:29.309 --> 00:14:30.309
They were:

00:14:30.309 --> 00:14:32.309
al-Harith ibn Hisham,

00:14:32.309 --> 00:14:34.309
‘Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi‘ah,

00:14:34.309 --> 00:14:36.309
and ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl.

00:14:36.309 --> 00:14:38.309
Al-Harith asked for water to drink.

00:14:38.309 --> 00:14:40.309
When it was brought to him,

00:14:40.309 --> 00:14:42.309
‘Ikrimah looked at it,

00:14:42.309 --> 00:14:44.309
and said, "Give it to him."

00:14:44.309 --> 00:14:46.309
When they brought it near him,

00:14:46.309 --> 00:14:48.309
‘Ayyash looked at it,

00:14:48.309 --> 00:14:50.309
and said, "Give it to him."

00:14:50.309 --> 00:14:52.309
When they reached ‘Ayyash,

00:14:52.309 --> 00:14:54.309
they found that he had already passed away.

00:14:54.309 --> 00:14:56.309
When they returned to his companion,

00:14:56.309 --> 00:14:58.309
they found that he had also joined him.

00:14:58.309 --> 00:15:00.309
May Allah be pleased with them.

00:15:00.309 --> 00:15:02.309
May He give them to drink from the Hawd al-Kawthar,

00:15:02.309 --> 00:15:04.309
a drink after which they will never thirst,

00:15:04.309 --> 00:15:06.309
thereafter,

00:15:06.309 --> 00:15:08.309
and grant them the green gardens of Paradise,

00:15:08.309 --> 00:15:10.309
where they will dwell

00:15:10.309 --> 00:15:12.309
forever.

00:15:12.309 --> 00:15:14.309
‘Ikrimah will come to you,

00:15:14.309 --> 00:15:17.659
as a believer and a migrant.

00:15:17.659 --> 00:15:19.659
Do not insult his father,

00:15:19.659 --> 00:15:21.659
for insulting the dead hurts the living,

00:15:21.659 --> 00:15:23.659
and it does not reach the dead.

00:15:23.659 --> 00:15:25.659
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

00:15:32.389 --> 00:15:34.389
[The remaining lines are fragmentary/garbled in the source; translating as intended context:]

00:15:34.389 --> 00:15:36.389
O poet,

00:15:36.389 --> 00:15:38.389
praise them, for they are the best.

00:15:38.389 --> 00:15:40.389
In their praise, how can we ever do them justice?
